Chapter 2-
He awoke in an instant, as drearily, his eyes slowly went open, and a small sound filled his ears. Undecernible, as he couldn't quite tell what it was.
It was strange, the fact that his entire body felt completely refreshed in an instant; he felt like he could run a marathon or do a backflip across the entire Hokage mountain. Was this perhaps… a dream? No, this wasn't like his usual dreams; he didn't feel any of the faux happiness his mind would usually conjure up in place of his normal life, only to wake up in the morning with a sense of longing.
This was reality; it had to be; there was no explanation. He was now awake and in his room; he was sure of it.
The only thing was, this room seemed to be different, he realized as such almost instinctively. Although don't get him wrong, the furniture was still the same, as well as the same rustic look, the white walls, fluorescent lighting, and potted plants along the walls, that he was used to. No, the thing that was different wasn't exactly the room; it was what was outside of it.
As he looked out the same transparent glass windows that he was used to, he saw nothing, just…. Nothing.
It was like gazing into the darkness of the abyss, or the night sky on a rather inky night, with only small flickers of light off in the distance to break the blackness apart. When he had gazed out the window, expecting to see the deep nightlife of Konohagakure no Sato, he had seen nothing. No street lights, no people wandering the darkened streets, no buildings. That's why when he looked outside the window, he noticed something was off immediately. But for some reason, a reason he didn't quite know, he didn't feel uncomfortable at all, like this is how this room had always been
Which brought him back to the strange noise he had been hearing; it sounded like… crying.
Someone was crying.
The faint sound of tears and audible gasps and fissures of the nostrils became apparent to him; it was a sound he had become all too familiar with in the room. However, this time he realized the sound wasn't his own, no, it was coming from the very edge of the room.
Rising to his feet, he followed the subtle sound of sorrow, and it was only then that he began to realize exactly who it was that had been making the noise.
It was a girl, one about his age.
The first thing he took note of was the girl's vibrant red hair, a shade he hadn't ever seen before. But the second thing he noticed was the girl's clothes; she wore a dress, the design of which he was entirely unfamiliar with. With large poofs and bright and fine colors, she gave both the aura of wealth and nobility. The quality of the fabric seemed valuable as well, with him only having seen the Hokage's robes to be of a similar weave. But that was only something the village leader wore when performing his business or diplomatic duties. The fact that this girl was so plainly wearing a dress of this quality so casually exclaimed the fact that she was from money. After all, why else would a child be wearing a cloth with such a high thread count? It wasn't like she would be able to do any work, so she would be able to afford it on her own.
All in all, he had concluded that this girl was at least some sort of noble, a princess of some sort, and a person of interest. This brought upon another question…
Why was such a girl of high standing sitting in his room? Along his wall, her back leaning right on the bottom of his door. She likely hadn't noticed him, if the fact that she was still crying as he looked at her was any indicator.
Now, Naruto wasn't the type of person to stare at someone crying for long. He had always been the type to push himself into action when he had seen something bad happen. It was why he had helped the girl named Sakura when she had gotten bullied because of her big forehead back at the academy. It had also been the reason he had helped that weird white-eyed girl when a group of kids had picked on her during the winter. And although, unfortunately, neither of them returned his gesture, he would still do the same thing should he see their mistreatment happening again. That was just the kind of person Naruto Uzumaki was.
Nonetheless, this time was no different, and as such, he walked up toward the girl and called her attention. Even if he was sort of expecting her not to respond to him.
"Umm… hell, uh, are you alright?" He asked, trying to break the ice. It wasn't like he was used to situations like this; usually when he saw a girl crying, it was solved by him trying— and usually failing— to kick the ass of the person who caused it to happen. But there was no person in the vicinity he could be up, and nobody he could take down. Besides them, he could tell this room was completely and utterly alone, just as it had always been.
"I noticed you were feeling a little sad over there… and I was wondering if I could help?" The blonde child said, not knowing what else to say. Most of the time, he didn't usually talk with people his age, so he didn't know how to communicate with others. But he hoped being honest in this situation would help. What was the worst thing that could happen?
The moment he called to her attention was the moment she noticed him, as she opened her eyelids, showing off her sea-foam green eyes to him for the first time, even as teardrops marred their reflection. He thought they were beautiful, a color he had never imagined even on the brightest and most luxurious rainbows. In a way, he was mesmerized, as she locked eyes with him, he imagined a vast ocean, being locked away in them, never to return. Yet he didn't mind it; he could stare into her eyes for what seemed like hours.
It took an entirety of two seconds for Rias to register who was in front of her, or rather, what was in front of her. Locking eyes with an individual she did not know, the only thing she could do was react. Jumping to her feet in an instant, she summoned forth a few small magic circles. As a set of dark and black orbs was formed, floating menacingly in the air before them. She launched them towards him faster than he could register. "I don't know who you are, but if you think you can come into my room uninvited, I'll show you just exactly who I am!" she shouted.
There was an intruder in her home, someone she did not know. As such, she reacted the only way she knew how. She didn't know how such a person got past all the guards, not to mention was able to sneak past all the maids in a way that he wasn't caught, making it to her room unnoticed.
Naruto's eyes widened as he instinctively dodged all her balls of her Power of Destruction by a hair, causing them to destroy some of his room in the process. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, I don't know who you are, but you're in my room! I don't even know how you got here, Ya'know!" He shouted in defense, raising his arms in surrender. He didn't know what sort of jutsu the girl used, but he could tell it was powerful, being able to blast large holes in his floorboards in an instant. He didn't want to imagine what they would do if they hit his person.
Rias's eyes narrowed before she finally took the time to gauge her surroundings, and it was that moment that she was utterly dumbfounded. Looking around, she could tell that she wasn't in her room. This brought up the question: just how exactly had she ended up in this location without even noticing? Teleportation? No, she would have noticed the magic being built up long before a circle had been placed. So what exactly happened, and what was their plan?
Looking at the person next to her, she analyzed him. It was a young boy, the same age as her, and he seemed just as clueless as her. Was this some sort of joint kidnapping? If so, it would explain their similar ages. But she was a noble, of the clan of House Gremory, and from what she could tell, this boy didn't seem any different than an ordinary human.
Wait? This boy said that this was 'his' room. What did he mean by that? She looked towards him, her red magic circles glowed ferociously. "Hey! Where are we?!" she shouted towards him, as the blonde's eyes widened at her threat.
His arms still raised forward, he answered her. "Umm… we're in my room, at least I think it is…" he stated, still confused at their ordeal. Just who was this girl, and why was she in his room threatening him?
"What do you mean 'you think it is'?" she questioned, not understanding what exactly he meant, eyes still narrowed.
Naruto merely pointed towards the nearby window, as she turned, eyes widening as she saw it. The endless abyss that lay outside the room was as if the room had been swallowed up by the infinite void. So much so that it felt like she could stare outside for hours and not even begin to understand their depth.
Where exactly was she? It felt like she was in a dream, a false reality that he mind had conjured up. But even with that feeling she felt in her heart, her mind was absolutely certain it wasn't. No, she knew this was reality.
"Huh?"
That was all she could say.
Out of all things, she hadn't quite expected this to happen.
"It's weird, right?" Naruto questioned as if he were talking about something mundane. Like the grass being a different color, or the clouds fogging out the sun. Not the fact that a giant void lay wide outside the building. The building that, mind you, was completely foreign to her.
She felt her mind was going to collapse.
Had she been kidnapped? Had she somehow been taken from her home right under her nose? Somehow, and she didn't know how, but it was like she was teleported into this strange room.
With some… strange kid from who knows where.
She needed to find answers.
As Naruto watched her move around what seemed to be his apartment in determination, trying to escape.
Rias's first instinct was to try for the door, but of course, that seemed locked. She tried the strange jutsu she had used before to blast it open, but that didn't work. And even if it did, he was kind of left to question what her next plan was. After all, it seemed like a world of empty space, with nothing the eye could see.
Her next option was to construct a teleportation circle, which she did on the floor, only that also seemed to have no luck. Naruto thought she was trying to make some strange type of seal, and he didn't stop her. For some reason, when she activated the seal, it only glowed for a second, with the red-haired girl still in the room.
"I don't understand it, the teleportation circle should have worked, I don't know why it didn't!" She shouted in.
The teleportation circle is a technique that all the devil's family can use to transport to another location with the same marking. Using a devil's energy to act as fuel for a summoning to a specific location. It should have taken me back to my parents' home, and she didn't get why it didn't.
Of course, the teleportation of a devil could be restricted if another magical being had the proper setup. But that would cause her circle to not activate at all. Which wasn't what happened, no, her magic circle did activate. But it was as if the toll required for the magic circle to teleport her was too vast.
Which was strange.
Devils were able to teleport from nearly any dimension, whether it be artificially created or just that of the human world and the underworld.
For her circle to not work… well was like they were in a completely different reality altogether.
Rias threw herself with her back against the wall, frustrated.
She just didn't understand it.
And that made her even angrier.
Because no matter how much she disliked being in her room, she would prefer being there. Not that it mattered, after all, even if she were there, she would be completely and utterly alone.
Although here she wasn't alone.
"Ummm, you seem kind of angry. Did your tele-something not work right?" He questioned, having watched her up until now.
Rias regarded him, for some reason, he had been just watching her up until this moment, and she had almost forgotten he had been there in the first place.
"Angry? Of course I'm angry! We're who knows where, with no way of knowing if we'll ever get back. How can you not be?!" She accused.
He had been so quiet up until now. Why was he so calm about this?
Naruto faltered under her anger. "Well, I…" he shifted.
"Well?" She questioned.
"Well, I'm pretty sure this is a dream," he told her, as if he knew instinctively.
"A dream?" Rias blinked.
That explained it. If this world were a figment of her imagination, then it would explain why her teleportation circle didn't work. And the fact that they couldn't leave the room, it would also explain the endless void outside. That really should have been her first clue.
It was the only explanation that made sense.
How else would she have ended up in some unknown location after her slumber?
That didn't explain one thing, though.
And that was the strange blonde boy right in front of her. Dreams only ever conjure images from places or people you had seen before. She had never seen this boy for as long as she could remember, nor the room they were in.
As she observed the blonde boy who was before her. Seeing who he was.
He was a small thing, smaller than she was, even though they looked to beof similar age. With strange… whisker marks? Across his face, maybe he was a yokai, or someone with kitsune lineage.
She would have remembered seeing him before; he certainly had a distinct appearance.
Not to mention, he seems more… real than the people who usually were formed in her dreams.
Which led her to believe that he was real.
She had heard of strange occurrences where two people had linked dreams in her occult readings. Maybe this had something to do with that?
It would probably be best to keep her devil lineage a secret; she wouldn't want that to cause problems if he weren't aware of the occult.
Naruto seemed to realize that she was staring at him, as he squirmed under her gaze.
It wasn't
"Umm…" Naruto started, but he stopped himself.
"What?" Rias questioned what he was going to say.
"Well, I wanted to know if this really is a dream… I-I wanted to know if you would be my friend?" Naruto finally questioned.
First, there was silence.
"Ha!"
… and then there was laughter.
He should have known. Most of the other kids also have the same response, and they would outright mock him. He found that a lot of their parents looked down on him, encouraging them to not be friends with him for a reason he didn't understand.
He thought that this girl might be different, after all, if she were someone from his dreams, he might be able to give him a chance.
But that didn't seem to be the case.
Rias laughed. But it wasn't a laugh of malice or anything of the sort. But rather disbelief
Rias heard his statement, and the first thing that she would say was that she was surprised. Surprised that he would ask such a thing, she definitely wasn't used to it.
Most of the kids she encountered were usually other nobles whom her parents wanted her to get along with. Most of them were quite spoiled— although the Sitri heir seemed to prove to be one of the few heirs she could actually tolerate. Or they would be devils that knew of her identity and wanted to get into her good graces.
There wasn't anybody who had outright asked to be her friend. Much less is known about her identity.
That was why she laughed.
"Why yes, I'll be your friend," Rias told him. If they were stuck here in this room, they might as well be stuck together.
"Really?" Naruto said in disbelief. Before his disbelief melded into joy. "Alright!" He shouted in delight.
Rias giggled at this. It was a genuine laugh, and a joy she truly hadn't felt in a while.
Naruto could barely contain himself; he had made a friend. Someone who didn't avoid him, and he would have jumped around the building if not for one thing.
As the red-haired girl extended a hand towards him.
"I'm Rias, Rias Gremory," she introduced himself.
As Naruto realized he hadn't picked up her name, and that she didn't know his as well. He took her hand excitedly, "Naruto Uzumaki, and I'm going to be Hokage one day!"
Rias smiled at him, not sure what a Hokage was. But it would seem that her new friend was a rather eccentric one.
Naruto realized her smile was rather beautiful.
As a friendship was formed. One that would last a lifetime.
End Chapter.
