This is a longer scene (3k) and we're maybe halfway through the chapter now, or a little less~ It's also an entire new scene that was never in the drafts. There's now links in the documents to flip back and forth between scenes, also.

Chiaroscuro VIII - Scene 2

God, Keyd, could you be more of a dick? Keyd: My Dad's gonna hate me cause I'm gay... Maedajon: I don't hate you, I've known for a while. Keyd: OMG how long have you known why didn't you say anything?! Maedajon: Cause I didn't want to put you in danger...? Keyd: Well have you made anything better for gay people? Maedajon: I mean, a little. I changed some laws so that- Keyd: NOT ENOUGH!!!

They're pretty much both equally at fault here, mostly because they just can't freaking communicate. Maedajon is kind of putting that 'it was too dangerous!' defense over his real issue, which is he had no idea how to actually have a conversation with Keyd since they've never been close, because Maedajon is just as bad at personal interactions as Keyd is. Keyd is right about calling him out on these things but he also isn't giving Maedajon any credit at all, and Maedajon did legitimately want to help but he also...kinda of doesn't understand what he put Keyd through or that it really doesn't make anything easier for him. During this whole conversation Maedajon never actually said his actual opinion on Keyd, other than it hadn't changed on this day specifically. In Keyd's mind, due to their entire history together, Maedajon is only protecting him because of his title and their blood relation, and not because he doesn't think Keyd deserves a punishment or that this actually shouldn't be a crime. Since it's still legally a crime. Keyd is lashing out this hard because of their whole complicated history of not understanding each other, so maybe he is being a bit of a dick but Maedajon's not helping his own case here :)

Well, I guess now we know where Keyd inherited his "I can't emotions good" from. Keyd's too busy putting words in his dad's mouth, and his dad's too busy tiptoeing around Keyd's feeling. Would it hurt the guy to just come out and say "I love you, son"? God. These guys are the WORST. Alan needs to teach them about saying things out loud. Preferably with a lot of cursing mixed in.

Yeppp Keyd and his dad are really really similar. Alan's realizing this, and he's also seeing Maedajon more sympathetically than Keyd is, so it does make Keyd look more like a huge asshole right now, but Alan doesn't understand their whole history and this culture (like he says). Keyd definitely puts words in his dad's mouth, but not unfairly since Maedajon never made a visible hint that these aren't things he would have thought and was palling around with people Keyd knows for SURE thought these things, and he never made any of these changes until /after/ Keyd disappeared. And nope lol they're both too awkward and emotionally shy to ever just say something like that to each other. But this is why they both like Alan, even if his tendency to say just everything he thinks isn't professional or diplomatic, it's at least clear!

I vote for Diplomat Alan to solve all the world's problems. The Middle East? "Shit, guys. Like, why are you even fighting? Just share the land or whatever. I mean, fuck. Let's all go eat some hummus or something." Middle East = solved.
