Chapter V

The horrors persist but so do I. Been a couple months since this story's been posted, and this is perhaps a 'slower' talk-and-exposition heavy chapter. Continuing explicit changes, or at least explanations, on how the magic works and hopefully a more streamlined way of events unfolding, too. As always though I hope it's a little bit of an escape.

This will also be the second to last chapter before this story begins being ""locked"" (for free) to the $ 1 tier (again for free!) to avoid bots.

Happy Pride everyone.

So fucking good, idk how but Rysa’s even more lovable in this version. I love all the exposition, and I’m curious how Alan learning about the entities’ consciousness so early in this version will change how he feels about them. Also idk how I never wondered this before but if frequency translates a short expression in one language into a long one in another, does it come across spoken faster or does it take more time for the listener to hear it? Could you still hear them talking when their mouth has stopped moving?

thanks! I really did want to build up her and their friendship more in this version, so I'm glad that's working! and yeah, since the magic is actually explained more, Alan's reactions/feelings are a little more complicated about it all which is intended to basically affect him through the entire series and not just the final book. and yes that's exactly what happens haha. in at least one of the early/draft versions Alan described it as like a bad dub, where either they've stopped moving their mouth but he still hears words, or the other way around - no words but they're still 'talking' (it's usually this way since their language is more wordy than English a lot of the time)

Oh my God, Alan is so relatable. Reminds me when I still hadn’t come out as bi/pan and I would get nervous and clumsy around people because I was still not honest with myself. Keyd: Has unbuttoned shirt collar. Alan: Distractedly lands in trash. 🤣

loool I'm glad you enjoyed that; I loved adding that silly detail esp since there's not much Keyd in this chapter overall other than Alan continually thinking about him :D

Yes, like Uno said, it’s nice to see Rysa and Alan’s friendship develop more. I know that Rysa has had experience adjusting to other cultures, but (spoiler????) she’s reaaaaallly had to adjust much more than others in a lot of ways. It’s nice to see her figuring out culture via Alan, who seems to forget that he *probably* needs to tell her some important stuff about how modern earth works. (Like green/red lights and how to use a crosswalk, omg, Alan! Teach her how to use a crosswalk—oh, she figured it out herself. 🤣)

(I'm replying to this comment instead of the one you sent earlier bc patreon is useless and won't let me reply directly to that one) I'm glad that's working for you too! Rysa and Alan continually have a lot in common (esp when it's Alan's turn to adapt to a ~whole new culture~) so I just wanted an extra bit of established rapport with them earlier on. And she's definitely a lot more familiar with adjusting and learning quickly, and unfortunately gives off that vibe of being super capable so Alan kinda forgets that yeah, she actually knows almost nothing about how anything works. But he's barely been anywhere himself and has a hard time conceptualizing even how different things could be in another culture on Earth, he's so used to what he knows and it being 'normal'
