Skiagraphia: Epilogue

Part of me wanted to post this on Valentine's day because it's kind of a romantic little epilogue but then I decided naww 'cause it's set at Christmas. So commentary will go up on Valentine's day.

But anyway, here's the epilogue! The final bit of this story. For me it's a short chapter but it's still about 7k words. It's the end, but also not the end, because of the rewrites. And the million other stories planned in this universe. So this is hardly the last time you'll see Keyd and Alan. Next month I'll start back up on Chiaroscuro again! And I really want to thank absolutely everyone who stuck to the end of the story with me, if you started reading right at the beginning or just found the story recently. It really means a lot to me that people cared about it enough to stay through the inconstant updates or parts of the series being taken down, and are on this site supporting me as well. So thank you, I wish I could figure out how to do more for you! I might start doing livestreams again in the future, so people can come hang out and talk to me while I write, and I'll probably have a poll about that soon.

And the character Q&A is still open; it'll be open until near the end of the month! Then I'll post the document with answers in the last few days. You can also ask pairs of characters a question if you like!

That was so perfect! I think I smiled the entire time I was reading it. My favourite part was "ugh why". I love Keyd on earth stuff. It's funny and cute to see him react to things, and it really brings out the thing I love most about his character, how people are sort of intimidated by him but he's actually a huge dork. Lots of people being like "wow this guy is huge and intimidating" and Keyd going "help my fingers are sticky". Will we get an extra at some point with the proposal? I'd really like to see that.

:D I don't even know how many siblings Alan has but I love how all of their names start with A. The ring, decorating the tree, shared candy canes. So sweet I think I got a cavity. And the best part of it all is that we come back almost to where we started, on Earth, but where everything has changed for Alan and he is no longer aimless and unsure of the future. I am looking forward to the notes. Now that it's completely finished I feel like I need to reread some things because I feel like I definitely missed or forgot about things as we got closer to the end.

Their entire family has names that start with A (his mom and dad too), middle names that start with B, and a last name C. So their initials are all ABC on purpose, after his parents realized they were both ABC already :) And the story really did come around in a big circle but with everything changed. There's a LOT OF STORY especially in this last book so it'd be real easy to forget stuff (I know I have to check back a lot) especially since it took so long to write!

Haha I'm glad you enjoy Keyd being a huge dork. It's very fun to write. Keyd kind of won Alan over with his huge dorkiness anyway, since those were always the moments where Alan was like 'oh this dude's not so scary actually'. There will definitely be some kind of one-shot or side story with the proposal in it; it'll probably be included in the series of little stories that I'm planning to do from multiple POVs and points on the timeline of the series.

I also love whenever someone's like "I can't just talk to him casually, I have to be super formal and respectful to our king!" and Alan is like "Please be friends with my shy boyfriend. He doesn't know how to play with the other children." I want to see when Alan tells the rest of his family about all this stuff as well! Will he have to enlist someone else to prove magic is real, since Keyd can't really do that anymore? That's not the kind of thing you accept on someone's word alone, even if they're family. And I want to see both weddings! There are so many things I want to see.

Hahaha that's a pretty perfect description of Keyd. Secretly going "how do I friend???" with Alan trying to help. Alan will eventually tell his family the truth, and he'll definitely plan to come armed with proof (mostly Rysa) since yeah, Keyd can't really prove anything anymore. The wedding on Earth would probably be pretty small and casual since it'd be the way Alan would prefer things, which would be really low-key and non-flashy. On the other hand, agistar wedding is a big deal so that will be a serious Event, even though Keyd would also prefer something low-key but he knows that's not something he can really do in his position.

Man this is just so sweet and cute, and I smiled like a dope through the whole thing! I love domestic/cute scenes with characters and especially with Alan/Keyd because they are such a great couple. So basically this was just so feel good and smiley, lol. So much of this was fun to imagine. I loved Keyd asking "Can I help with Christmas?," something about it just made me laugh. And imagining how a shopping trip went with him and Alan's sisters. And overall Ashley and Alan's relationship makes me smile because it reminds me of my relationship with my brother (who is actually named robert, wants to be called rob but we insist on also calling him robbie and he hates it, since he thinks he's grown up now haha), with the constant teasing and ribbing. I love family dynamics and this was fun. Other things that made me smile a lot to imagine (other than all of it I guess!) is imagining Keyd destroying everyone at Risk, and the thought of Ashley attending Alan's big ole alien wedding in the future.

I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I think they deserved a feel-good ending after the stuff I've put them through in this story, haha. And readers too! And especially since home and family is such a big theme in the series it felt like a good place to have everything end - this ending's been written for a looong time, although I did keep editing/adding/deleting things to it but it was planned to be this for many years now, probably a couple months into actually starting this book. I really like writing Ashley and Alan's interactions, and I'm glad they ring pretty true because my brother and sister are WAY older than me and I didn't grow up with them so we don't have that kind of sibling teasing/fighting, so I base it off my friends' relationships with their siblings. To some extent Rhet and Ansa are the same way too. And yeah the 'haunted by a childhood nickname thing'…no one can escape it! Ashley's Robbie is the same – wants to be Rob now because he's grown up, haha. Ashley'll definitely be at that wedding; she'll also be the first to even go to Clarylon because she'll pester Alan to death about it until he lets her visit, way before he ever tells his family the truth.

What a lovely way to end it. The scenes with Alan's family are always hugely enjoyable to read, and Ashley and Alan's relationship and interactions are tons of fun. I love the constant teasing and insults between them, that's pretty much the only way my brother and I ever communicate with each other. The thought of Ashley being at Alan and Keyd's wacky alien wedding is absolutely brilliant, I hope we'll get to see it! It's so nice to see Alan and Keyd getting the chance to goof around together and do regular couple things, the pair of them make me smile so much. Keyd is ridiculously adorable when he's baffled by Earth things or just being a big socially awkward dork, it's such an entertaining contrast with his intimidating warrior/imposing agistar side. He's like... an oversized puppy that doesn't quite know what to do with itself. :3 On a side note, will we ever find out exactly what Aaron's issue with their relationship is?

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love writing Alan and Ashley's interactions, they're really fun and Ashley is just a fun character. She's a lot like Alan but a little more observant and logical about things. She'll definitely be at the wedding and it'll definitely be written about at some point! I have a bunch of little one-shots and side-stories planned to do that take place at different times during (or before or after) the series from different characters, so that'll be one of them. There will probably also be one about Aaron and what his deal is since there just wasn't room to cram it into this last book. Keyd really is a giant dork at heart. All the imposing warrior/agistar stuff was completely trained into him (although he is naturally good at public speaking) and also just from his physical appearance. He's the absolute most natural/himself around Alan at this point, and also around Rysa although he still does have a few ingrained behaviors he keeps up around her. And that's why he got super intensely more-than-normal trained when he was younger because everyone looked at this sweet shy little kid and was like "…um this is not a good future agistar, fix it."
