AI is going to salt and burn every creative industry before it eats the corporations developing it (see: that thing about Adobe now worried that if AI is doing all the 'creative' shit then far far less people will license or use their programs, whoops made themselves obsolete) and MAYBE some VAGUE legislation happens, but in the meantime I'm trying to dodge it as much as I can (challenge: impossible).

Meaning, I am going to take every bit of writing I have off of google docs, now that google has said 'we will scrape the entire internet for our ai learning'.

(In case this is the first time you've learned that's happening, I'm sorry. It doesn't specifically say gdocs, but you know they intend to include it, if not now then real soon - what a ripe stealing ground of free words.)

Obviously, this sucks! Everything here is technically hosted on gdocs! Even though my patreon is not active at the moment, I would like everything from the past to remain available to read, AND I am going to be posting something soon! So what to do about it?!

Basically, I'm looking into other document hosting/sharing sites that are encrypted and private. These are not free. But, they also aren't going to ai scrape you (YET).  But getting that set up, transferring everything, possibly having to reformat many many things, AND PAYING FOR IT CONSTANTLY, is going to suck (if you would like to throw a dollar or three my way for hosting funds, my ko-fi is my same username. totally voluntary tho!). But it's what I'm going to do. So you will probably see changes over all of the posts here in the near future, and if links suddenly stop working (in case....anybody is like...reading ancient chapters of things...posted years and years ago...) they won't be not-working for long. I'm not going to take everything down all at once, I'm going to do a slow transfer, because honestly it's likely already been scraped and rushing is pointless.

But NEW things are not going to go there! I'm looking at CryptPad currently but if anybody knows any good document/sharing editing services...lemme know.

My boyfriend recommends getting a Synology NAS and self-hosting your stuff through Nextcloud. Nextcloud technically has free accounts for a virtual private server (VPS) up to five gigs but they don't help out if something goes wrong since it's a third-party service, so you might be better going and renting somewhere else if you wanted to go the virtual route, especially if upfront cost is an issue. Renting will probably be more in the long run though. Also you don't know exactly where your data is that way, so might not be as optimal as just keeping it local. As far as other places to rent a VPS goes, My BF says Linode s a company that sometimes does Integrations with youtubers where they give $100 in credit for new sign ups, so it's possible you could get a deal on them, and then the same thing, just pull it using Nextcloud to generate links. So like how on google you can send out a link and anyone with access to that link can see just that one post, I believe this works the same way. It miiight maybe be possible to lock down your stuff to just Nextcloud accounts only, but I don't know. Like how on google you can allow access to just specific users so you're not sharing links (which could theoretically compromise security) but I really don't know if that's an option. (And take all that ^ with a grain of salt, I don't 100% know how it works but it sounds worth to look into) Here'a a drive that's under $200: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-DS220j-Diskless-2-bay/dp/B0855LMP81/S?th=1 This one is cheaper (still expensive I know) cause it doesn't come with any storage but it allows you to buy whatever amount you need and you could always upgrade later if you need more space. And here's a link to nextcloud: https://nextcloud.com/ They have some instructions for hosting your own server: https://nextcloud.com/install/#instructions-server This is all going over my head quite a bit, I'm just relaying info from my BF whos a lot more security/tech savy than I, but if you have any questions feel free to ask? I can't guarantee we'll have an answer but we'll always try to help lol

I can look into some of this stuff for sure, but it's /definitely/ going over my head! Anything that has to do with self-hosting is like a white-noise static for me, I just can't comprehend it all for some reason or how people even do it. I'm sure I could, if I spent like a couple hundred hours on learning it! I definitely do get that hosting everything yourself is the safest possible way, but I am pretty dumb in some of these areas sometimes and want a bigger brain to just rely on haha. I also definitely do not have that much money to drop on things up front (and at least cryptnote is like 5-10 bucks a month - it still sucks money from you like a streaming service but at least it's in little bits!). But thank you for all these suggestions! I will definitely look into...the ones that I could understand.

I totally understand lmao He's a linux guy so idk what's going on most of the time when he talks about this stuff lol But I'm trying to learn a bit cause I can appreciate the push for more security and control over my own data esp with all this ai bull :| I'll ask him when he wakes up if he can think of any other hosting services that aren't trash. I think he's going to say that they'll all have a certain level of unacceptableness to them. He initially suggested Amazon Web Services (AWS). Personally I don't like Amazon, but like any other hosting service there'll be risks and as long as it's paid for theoretically it should be as safe as any other choice. But you know :\ I'll see if he has any other suggestions lol https://aws.amazon.com/pricing/?aws-products-pricing.sort-by=item.additionalFields.productNameLowercase&aws-products-pricing.sort-order=asc&awsf.Free%20Tier%20Type=*all&awsf.tech-category=*all

Ok, yes. He says Linode. Apparently they have a simple set up process that links with nextcloud (seems there's a whole bunch to choose from but this is what he suggests) and a lot of it is kind of one-click and your done stuff. Like I said, there's $100 sign up credits. It seems to be around $5 a month, but there might be a couple other fees I don't know about but it should be around there. This should give you the sign up credit: https://login.linode.com/signup?promo=marketplace100-1 If for whatever reason it doesn't, let me know, but that link comes from this link, which is the how to link: https://www.linode.com/marketplace/apps/nextcloud/nextcloud/

Thanks for all this! Just due to being in grad school and frequently full time working I definitely don't have the brain capacity atm, but I will probably do this (or try it out) after all this garbage is over lol. In the meantime I think I'll use CryptPad since it seems useable and it's encrypted (seems legit? it's developed in Europe where they care about privacy), and I don't have to learn an entire new skill hahah. But thanks so much for all this info! It's definitely useful and I would have never found any of it on my own.

Way late but I’m super happy to hear no more google bullshit involved in reading your stories! I’ve been planning to go and reread some of them once I’ve got some downtime where I’m okay becoming a useless mess of tears and emotions, so I’m extra glad to hear this now.

Unfortunately google was so convenient but now we all get to suffer from relying on a 'free' product....oops. I haven't started moving anything over yet because real life got VERY busy, but will probably start around the end of this year!

The shift from the early internet days of “this is free cuz I thought it was cool and wanted to share” to the current “free means you’re the product, not the customer” has definitely been painful sometimes lol. If you haven’t made the switch yet then I’m assuming I’m not too late to suggest alternatives, so if you haven’t looked at mega cloud storage that might be worth a try. The free tier gives 20GB of end to end encrypted storage, and you can allow access to specific users or to anyone with the link. It also supports viewing .docx files with the display done locally, meaning only the people with the link see the content and mega doesn’t. I don’t think it’s got an editor (or if it does, it’s probably not a good one) so you’d need another way of creating/editing the documents (OpenOffice comes to mind if you were using google docs before) and mega would only be for sharing them. It would probably add an extra step to your workflow vs cryptpad, but would be free rather than subscription based assuming your documents stay below 20GB total size. Anyway, hope you’ve been the fun kind of busy rather than the stressful kind!
