Has YWA (or a friend of the show) covered “Participation Trophies” yet?

Nell Hendricks

ABC family’s “Secret life of the American teenager”

Gabrielle Lombardo

Love island UK season 1 or 2 is an insane social experiment. Reality TV in general, what's going on there?

Tomcat

I’m a journalist and would love to share my expertise about the CIA’s drug tests with LSD. The program called MK-ULTRA is the inspiration for so many movies and conspiracies about shady government experiments. I’ve co-authored a book that includes MK-ULTRA and other Cold War stories called "The Last Honest Man," due to be published in May 2023. https://www.littlebrown.com/titles/james-risen/the-last-honest-man/9780316565134/ If interested, please message my account here or the email I sent Sarah. My wife and I are huge fans of your podcasts, and I would love to share my expertise. Please consider anytime you want me to talk about spies. I researched the entire Cold War for my book.

Please an episode about Julianne Koepcke with Blair 🥺

Mikayla Holland

Idk if this has been said since there’s over 1,000 comments haha. But I just learned about the Hosana Church scandal in Louisiana, and it genuinely took me a second to find sources that suggested it was a satanic panic case — like there’s a whole 20 minute vice doc on it that treats all the claims totally credulously?? So anyway, Sarah, I’d love your research skills and take on that one!

Nadine

Feminists burning their bras in the 60s... I just heard a historian saying no bras were burned?!? Help us, Sarah - is it true?

Lucia Webb

Israel Keyes with podcaster Josh hallmark who makes the show true crime bullshit!

Obilot

…assuming we’re Wrong About something pertaining to him!

Rebecca Sparks

Omg- I would love a YWA about Mensa.

Violence Zack

Millenials? Extended adolescence? Generational identity as a whole? Maybe that's not specific enough or maybe the concept of generational identity is inherently meaningless? But as a millenial I feel like we've gotten gaslit our whole lives and criticized by other generations as being lazy and ineffectual.

G

If suggestions are still be taken here, I’d love to hear your take on Joan Crawford and Mommie Dearest. I have really appreciated the balance you’ve struck in your discussions of people and particularly famous women who are absolutely deserving of criticism but to whom the response feels either disconnected or disproportionate to the thing they actually deserve criticism for. I feel like Crawford and Mommie Dearest are very much in this vein where I think there should’ve been more discussion of the broader context and society which allow for and encourage abuse and less… making an over the top and inaccurate movie to basically fun of Joan Crawford (and eventually Faye Dunaway) when that was really largely what people wanted an excuse to do. Plus, I think there’s a lot to talk about in terms of the legacy of Joan Crawford and the film having very little to do with Crawford as a person or an actress, and very little to do with, say, awareness or empathy around child abuse, and instead it’s all campy jokes about wire hangers that if anything make a mockery of actual abuse dynamics. Love the show!

Elizabeth Kravetz

Jocelyn Elders. Black female attorney general under Clinton. She was forced to leave office after talking about masturbation as safe sex. I don't understand how she hasn't been more discussed (or discussed at all!) in the decades since the 90's. Love the show so much.

Elizabeth Kravetz

Correction: Joycelyn Elders. Sorry about the misspelling.

Nancy Jean Ross

Hi Sarah: the Brontës, Charlotte and Emily.

Mary DeVore

I’d love to hear an episode on ADHD diagnosing and the stimulant shortage. It’s a very complex and sensitive issue, and your episode are always so well-researched and presented very thoughtfully. I am a mental health RN and I’ve witnessed first hand the explosion of diagnoses and subsequent stimulant prescriptions. Many people are being diagnosed incorrectly—through no fault of their own (mostly)—which is making it harder for those who truly have the disorder to get adequate treatment.

Zoe S.

Anything around how Classical Antiquity is put on a shiny white pedestal and has been coopted by the alt right white nationalists! You’re Wrong About Stoicism, boys. 💅🏼 ps luv u Sarah

I think your Harry and Meghan episode could have a re-look. I couldn’t actually finish it because I really felt you guys didn’t do a lot of research on it. But all your other episodes blow me away with your research, insight and empathy.

Woodstock ‘69. As an aging Gen-Xer, I was raised on how amazing that event was, but after watching the HBO doc on Woodstock ‘99, it would be great for someone to take a second look on how much peace and love there actually was at the original event.

I think you should have Wagatwe Wanjuki on and talk about intimate partner violence and sexual assaut in colleges! Sorry, it's heavy but would be so interesting!

Southbridge

Michael Hobbes, invite him on as a quest and just lay into him for like an hour. He needs a good roasting now that he's off the show.

Would love to hear an episode about the first news event i remember in my life, the Tyson-Holyfield ear-biting incident

Christen

Go Ask Alice/Beatrice Sparks.

SROK

Oh - not things that we're wrong about but things that we don't know about. Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, Coconut Grove Fire - historical events that have led to changes in building and safety ( i say this coming from the world of architecture.) Also love the idea above about the neighborhood watch. Maybe about indigenous peoples? I think there's A LOT we were taught about people native to North America that's incorrect. Would be great to find a partner host on that one. I'm briming with ideas.

Sydney Linders

Omg so many: the Radium Girls, No Child Left Behind, the Eerie Canal, books bound in human skin, I have more but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Have you heard the Decoder Ring episodes on her? So wild. I'd love a YWA take on her

Sharare Samaie

madeline mccann? but more specifically maybe the conspiracy around her parents

Bill Lebar

Don’t know if this necessarily falls into the scope of the show, but I would love to hear your take on the whole Freakonomics thing about how legalized abortion “solved” the crime wave that dropped in the late 90s and 2000s, as well as the conservative response that it was due to us locking up criminals/everyone (barf). The latter is obviously gross and wrong, but the former also seems simplistic and clickbaity and had a lot of partisan cheerleading around it on both sides.

Sam Thames

Please don’t leave us hanging on the OJ!!

Laura

Mermaids or baby Jessica

Gweneficial

Any interest in an episode about the meritocracy? I think a lot of people are still wrong about it.

Amy Veeres

Gamergate BUT NOT LIKE THAT - The thing that we got wrong was that we thought it was a bunch of pissy nerds being assholes, when in actuality it was the canary in the coal mine for things like covid anti-vax and qanon.

auntie christ

I am dying for a Playboy themed episode

placeholder

I'd love to see you do an episode on the Duggars. You mentioned it briefly in the Westboro episode. The way 19 Kids and Counting was a family-friendly show about a family with a lot of kids, but underneath it is the IBPL fundie Christian church that essentially exists as a breeding fetish cult.

Allison Sullivan

As an academic librarian, scholarly publishing and communications. What is a study? What is peer review? Why don't scholars get paid?

I haven't stopped thinking about Casey Anthony since the death of her daughter, Caylee. She was America's villain of choice at that moment, and I wonder if further research would reveal that her story needs a debunking. Thank you for all you do, Sarah Marshall. We don't deserve you. XO

There’s a great YWA episode on this already! October 2018 - it’s a fascinating episode

Hayley

Casey Anthony - I grew up during the trial and I feel like I was bombarded with so much info about her that was completely irrelevant to whether or not she actually killed her daughter? More niche, but relevant to my field: would also love for someone to do a podcast about Avi Loeb who is a crazy astronomer at Harvard saying wild things about aliens that no scientist agrees with but he keeps getting platformed and going completely un-challenged on anything he’s saying

elobot

The DissociaDID / DID youtube community drama! It's got everything -- unnecessarily maligned morally gray women, satanic panic, etc. (Might be more of a bonus episode tho?)

Emily Buchwald

This is in part to settle a personal dispute, but I would love an episode about the theory that OJ Simpson's son Justin was the actual killer of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.

David M. Perry

I mean ... I'm just a fan and supporter. But I dream of talking with you about how folks are wrong about the Middle Ages. (hence The Bright Ages)

Sean McCormick

Also Betsy DeVos and school choice movement! I would love to hear your views on school choice

Cassandra

Picasso and his place in art history, especially in Europe (the guest could be the lovely French but English speaking podcast host Julie Beauzac "was Venus shaving her pussy?" https://www.venuslepodcast.com/ )

Liz Winston

Anna Delvey (the SoHo grifter)! Something that is rarely discussed is that the friend Delvey scammed out of 60K ended up being a crucial actor in a sting to get Anna arrested when Anna was in rehab in California. The friend (Rachel Deloache Williams) has given so many interviews where she painted herself as a defenseless victim and she wrote a book where she made it very clear she was an unreliable narrator. But Deloache Williams has completely left it out of the narrative that she was very aggressive about getting Anna in trouble.

Kate Locke

And the scant evidence base behind the reputable ones too (and abstinence based treatment in general)

Sean McCormick

And catcher in the rye! Just an episode on its impact. It doesn’t have to be a book club

Donna Warfield

Casey Anthony, JonBenet Ramsay…. I’d love like banned books? I feel like we ignore this issue as a society when it’s really happening and highlight it in ways that aren’t accurate (like equating a few Dr Seuss books with the entirety of Seuss works)

Amanda

Menendez brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meglynn B

I second Andrea Yates, she was done wrong!

Baby Jessica is kinda my dream YWA episode for some reason.

Was it really the scream that took him down, why was it (supposedly) such a big deal, and how did him losing to John Kerry impact the outcome of the 2004 election, and everything that followed?

Sean McCormick

By catcher in the rye I mean like it’s impact on school shootings, etc

Mo Springer

Oh also the VC Andrews books

Hannah

Sinead O'Connor and the pope picture, the endless trend of stolen/illegally disseminated celebrity nudes and sex tapes, reasonable safety protocols on movie sets (I was thinking of the Twilight Zone movie, but the recent Alec Baldwin thing and Brandon Lee are also in there.

Erin Burba

Yes to all of these!

Lotte Brewer

Boston Marriages/ Romantic friendships!

Kristi Renfrey

I'd just like another OJ episode please

Laura Chaumont

The medicalization and myths around childbird and/or social media mums... So much to unpack here and so many misconceptions. You are amazing at what you do, thank you for the mind blowing and all the laughs💜

Ana Gavrilovska

I would LOVE your thoughts on the John Darnielle novel Devil House and in a perfect world you would have him on to talk about true crime and the Satanic Panic and the demonization of outsider kids.

Eileen Ablondi

Sid (Vicious) and Nancy (Spungen)! I highly recommend Nancy’s mother’s book — And I Don’t Want To Live This Life — which tells a really tragic and sympathetic story rooted in the failures of the contemporary mental health care system.

Leila Emery

YES! I have been secretly wanting this!

Murphy

infanticide, Ethel Rosenberg, magdalene laundries

Emily Todd

There's actually a really good episode of "The C Word" about Nancy. It's Lena Dunham's podcast on Luminary.

Carrie Shevelson

Nadia Comaneci! Her story, is pretty wild. The perfect 10. Bart Connor. Romania. Bela's abuse. Her defection. But a happy ending.

Sarah Andersen

This is pretty niche internet history, but I would love an episode on the online atheist outcry over Rebecca Watson's elevator story!

Maggie McAdam

Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Not necessarily together. I just want to hear the whole stories so I can be more insufferable at parties in the future

Murphy

not all in the same episode. :)

Nat

MORE OJ!!!! PLEASE

Prohibition! I don't know how/if i am wrong about this but i trust that our modern conception/memory of that time is flawed somehow and might have interesting links to the current War on Drugs

Love your show! Have you already done Sinead O’Connor (in the vein of maligned women of the 90s)? Thank you!

Pit Bulls!!! People either act like they’re the devil incarnate in dog form or the perfect angel with the myth of them as “nanny dogs” and I’d love a balanced take lol

Lindsay Mace

The Celebrity Biographies are always my favorite.

Scout

I would love to see you talk about “ADHD overdiagnosis” as a 90s-00s moral panic. As an adult with ADHD who grew up during that, it really impacted my life for the worse—my parents denied me medication I needed as a direct result of how they talked about ADHD in the media. I think it would be ideal to have a guest with ADHD who knows a lot about the neurodiversity movement! After listening to the episode about the movie Music, I trust you to handle this topic with grace. <3

Clay

You’re Wrong About: Critical Race Theory. That could be ✨spicy ✨

Julie Scalos

Libraries! Librarian here and EVERYONE gets libraries wrong. We need them now more than ever and they are actually saving people from homelessness and joblessness.

Cara Boyd

ooooh wow yes i second this

Freya's Prayer

Marie Antoinette with Lynn Hunt, Catherine the Great with Meilan Solly, Fruitcake with Jeffery Miller, or Everything (or just about) with Bobby Duffy.

Kim Baldwin

I don't know if any of us are necessarily "wrong" about influencers, but Kendra Austin did a TikTok recently about how we need to stop shitting on content creators; that it's a legit job now. Maybe someone (like Kendra) could speak to the difference between what a lot of think of when we think of influencers and the kind of legit, paid content creator Kendra is.

Gage Huey

or perhaps just Roaring 20s in general!!

Natalie Silvanovich

I would love if you continued OJ Simpson. Those were some of the best podcasts I’d ever heard.

Herring

Delia Derbyshire Melania Trump Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson

Baby Dracula

I know this might be a super basic one, but I've been watching the Pam and Tommy series and, even though I was a sentient little Canadian at the time of the sex tape, I don't really remember much about it. I'd be interested in what the series has gotten wrong, and how shitty '90s culture maligned Pamela Anderson (arguably the greatest export of our nation).

Robin Young

Have you read Mira Ptacin’s book The In-Betweens? It was my entry into this topic, super fascinating!

Lillian

Marie Curie

Lainey Drake

the history of vibrators and in general the lack of the understanding around women’s and reproductive health issues which persists today!

Lizzie

The Space Race! Or something wwi or wwii related - maybe Eva Braun (there are shades of Melania apologia in the way people talk about her) or the whole “Mussolini got the trains running on time” myth

Elizabeth Kite

I think there's an interesting Princess Diana follow up that could be done, especially with all the Meghan and Harry news. I think it's interesting that her kids have seemed to learn the opposite lessons from her experience, with William leaning even farther into keeping up the front and Harry deciding to GTFO. I also think that of all the maligned women of the 90s (TM), Diana is the closest we have to a You're Right About, where the story we know is closest to the truth. Obviously there's more nuance and mess and detail in the full story, but I think the basics of what she said are accurate: she was stuck in a marriage with a cold husband who was emotionally connected to his mistress, being tormented by paparazzi and her weird emotionally stunted in laws. Why is Diana the only women in the line up who was able to get her story across and get ppl to listen to her? Do you have to be literally the highest ranking woman on the planet? Or a marketing genius? Or tell a story that ppl are already primed to believe?

Tami Anderson

You could get Emily Willingham, author of “Phallacy,” on to do You’re Wrong About the Penis.

Samati Niyomchai

Anti-transgender restroom policies and where such policy ideas came from. It feels very "stranger danger" myth sort of deal you all do.

Kate Rombach

Betty Ford & the ERA please!

David Dein

I really want someone to do a deep dive of Hal Lindsay. You can argue that everything from Satanic Panic to 80's Cold War Panic, The New World Order, Cults, Conspiracy Theories, Anti-Vaccine Rhetoric, the capital insurrection and Foreign Policy begins with his book The Late Great Planet Earth. That book is the empty canvas that most of 20th Century religious Conspiracy Theories get their gas and while it gets a cautionary mention, it's impact is way undervalued.

Sage

Hi Sarah! I sent you an email about this a few months ago. I was friends with Kayla Mueller (ISIS hostage and Trump talking point). I'd very much like to see her story revisited. Thanks <3

Ann Marshall

I just desperately want the OJ episodes to continue more than anything.

Chris

I agree! Having lived through the OJ trial as an adult, I was not at all interested in reliving it, but Sarah brought me around :-)

Leila Emery

The "Girl Boss" phenomenon Male nudity in film/NC-17 ratings Sorority culture "Horror" movies for kids in the 80s (The Watcher in the Woods, Return to Oz, etc.) The SAT The white female con artist/grifter archetype (Anna Delvey, Elizabeth Holmes, etc.) TERFs Christian colleges Phyllis Schlafly/the Equal Rights Amendment Charter schools Banned books The dark side of overseas adoption Sex on TV 90s supermodels

Valentine Gallagher

I would LOVE an episode on the Kennedy’s and all the weird shit going on with them!! Especially the conspiracy theories around Johns death and also Rosemary Kennedy

Amanda Malina

Ancient aliens and the idea that aliens built the pyramids. So many people think it’s just silly theories or is even true but it’s deeply racist

Robin Young

Adding onto this - the replication crisis in the social sciences!

KJ Dyer

Wernher von Braun

Patrick Myers

children's entertainment of the late 90s fueling a new satanic panic, like Pokemon and Harry Potter, maybe? I remember it vividly as a 9 y/o but would love to see the trend from an adult perspective

Maggie

The Singapore chewing gum ban

Cam

Breastfeeding! Is it a scam meant to keep women from reentering the workforce ( . . . yes) and how it became such a moral obligation

Eileen Ablondi

I posted the same suggestion — that book absolutely gutted me!

Anya Klaassen

Thomas Edison, Nikolai Tesla, David Koresh, the Michael Jackson trial, the 'artist formerly known as' Prince, sleep hygiene, IQ tests

Aaron Anaya

I’d love to see an episode about Pollution as a media phenomenon centered around some of the big news stories from the 70s and 80s like Love Canal. It seems like we used to care a lot more about corporations polluting than we do now and that once Climate Change gained prominence we stopped hearing about Polluting in the media.

Lihonor

The moral panic over comic books also the moral panic over emo kids

Barb B

You could do a bunch of good episodes: why don't most mh masters students get training in evidence-based CBT, the socio-economics of billing insurance and how that affects the availability of services, or just the for-profit masters industry in general.

Lita R

The anthrax attacks of 2001!

Mo Springer

Van Gogh and the myth that artists have to suffer for great art

Rebeccuh

Lawrencia Bembenek!

Lahari Dunn

I know this is such niche topic but I would love if you guys did an episode of the Erica Jayne/Tom Girardi legal scandal.

Maggie

also 1920s spiritualist/medium scammers, the Rendlesham forest incident, and the dolphin LSD experiment

Al Crew

One topic: Taylor Behl (pronounced “beehl” not “bell”), MyDeathSpace, and erotic asphyxiation as a cover for abuse . She went missing in September 2005 and her body was found a a month later. There was intense media coverage of her disappearance (which probably led to her killer’s ex-GF suggesting where the body was in the first place). Also this is considered the first case where the general public scoured social media for clues (MySpace and Livejournal). Most people think Taylor met her killer online because they were MySpace friends but this isn’t actually true. As for sources, her mom wrote a book, there is a ton of media coverage from the time available, and apparently her killer admitted that he made up the erotic asphyxiation thing. MyDeathSpace is still around too.

Courtney O

I would love a level-headed and sympathetic look into Brittany Murphy's life and death. The HBO series was insightful about the domestic violence, but it also had distasteful moments that fanned the flames of conspiracy. The real story is tragic enough without it. It could also be a great moment to talk about her amazing VO work on King of the Hill! She was a cast member on that show from 1997 to when it ended in 2010. That's the majority of her acting career, as she passed away in 2010 (after the show was completed). I get weepy thinking about Kathy Najimy in the HBO doc talking about how special and talented Brittany was. I wish people would remember her without adding on conspiratorial details about her death.

Wim

maybe a lil basic & not as opaque & in need of debunking as other stuff but i watched the netflix amanda knox doc recently & it made me feel very 🤪 about the way people are still talking about the case!

Pippin

This is very niche, but the premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring

Helen Montgomery

Kony 2012, war on drugs, pure breed dogs/breed standards

Chris

This is probably more in politically in the weeds than your normal subjects, but I'd love to see an episode about the 2000 presidential election. I think most people know that Bush lost the popular vote and that there were shenanigans in Florida. But I don't think most people know that there was a large nonpartisan review of all the ballots in Florida that found that Gore got more votes when counting by any consistent standard statewide.

Sean McCormick

Long Island Medium (or psychics). I would love to debunk mediums and physics and she’s the worst because so many people I know believe her to this day she’s never been thoroughly debunked by the media so let’s do it! If anyone here wants to do the research for this too just generally that would be fun!!!!!

Morgan Ward

would LOVE a pam anderson ep, especially with all the controversy around the new series it feels like the right time and up your ally

Alex

I would love to hear an episode about celebrity gossip culture from when tabloids first became popular, to the TMZ/Perez Hilton/ gawker days to today’s era of deuxmoi and Reddit fan subcultures. Not necessary to focus on free Britney discourse but the wider phenomena of how the industry of celebrity gossip shapes popular culture and also reflects our culture back to us.

Mira

Continue the OJ trial! I was hooked on the back stories of everyone involved.

Lauren

This isn’t so much of a debunk as it is just a topic that I have desperately wanted to hear Sarah talk about - the satanic panic that ensued on TikTok (and elsewhere) after the Astroworld tragedy.

Jenessa Grant

Can you do that episode on Pam Smart? Also, can you cover the OJ trial and verdict?

wren_

I watched a TV dramatization of the arrest of Christopher Jefferies, an English landlord who had eccentric hair and a queer way of speaking. When one of his tenants was murdered, Jefferies was immediately selected as the prime suspect because everyone saw that he was different. The cops arrested him, and the media _destroyed_ him, calling him a pervert. The cops eventually found the real murderer, and the media actually paid him restitution and publicly apologized. A very happy ending for a change. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Honour_of_Christopher_Jefferies

Erin Burba

A multi-episode look at the prison industrial complex The evolution of how alcohol is marketed toward women Eleanor Roosevelt Redlining Medical treatment toward women & minorities- not believing the severity of symptoms, writing off actual symptoms as anxiety, medicine & treatment primarily being tested on cis white men, etc.

Travis Pruitt

Project Mogul, the Cold War surveillance program that caused the Roswell incident.

Robin Young

I would love to have an episode on chronic pain and disease and how our current medical system fails to treat it. For example: our past overreliance on opioids; doctors’ biases around women, people of color, and larger people; doctors’ lack of knowledge of newer research on the brain’s role in pain becoming chronic; why so many chronic pain and autoimmune disorders are more common in women.

Al Crew

They did this one in 2018 :)

Anthony Melo

There's a very early episode on the 2000 election!

Robin Young

Yes! Like the conspiracy-theory-proven-true that the government poisoned alcohol.

Sean McCormick

Actually there was one from a while ago! I want to see the Iraq War however, especially about Cheney and Rumsfeld ties to Halliburton and debunk the war!

Kestrel Wolgemuth

Would love a book club for the Sinead O'Connor memoir

Teana

Is Michael opposed to returning to the show for more OJ episodes? If not, it'd be nice to have some more of those.

Chris

Huh, I thought I had listened to them all! I stand corrected!

Bethany Lucas

Sybil! In a lot of ways, the book started the ritualistic sex panic

Jennifer K

It's a pretty broad topic, but gentrification.

Cold Crit

Alcoholism! So much eugenics and corporate money go into promoting the idea of it as a disease, thus an individual issue and not a societal one. Also! The children are overmedicated panic of the noughties and twenty-teens. As a woman who also has ADHD I'm very interested in hearing your take.

Brooke Lewitas

update us on your satanic panic research is false memory foundation!!!!!

Michael Richardson

When Geri Halliwell left the Spice Girls (but mostly Geri Halliwell's experience of being a Spice Girl, it's a great story!)

Kelsey Lambe

GMOs, the Comic Codes, the Hayes Codes, lavender marriages, Spiritualism, reality TV, Quiverfull and Purity Culture in general

Christina davis

“Wellness” brands- bring on Aubrey and Mike! The cross-over we all need!!

Georgia Reiner

The nursing shortage! There isn’t a shortage of RNs in this country! There are a lot of factors driving nurses away from the bedside at hospitals and nursing homes, including high nurse-patient ratios, workplace violence, and a physician-centric culture that undervalues nurses’ contributions to patient care.

Erin Burba

And how it can effect maternal mental health!!!! The extreme amount of pressure put on me by doctors, nurses, and myself after absorbing decades of “breast is best” messaging affected my anxiety and depression in ways I’m still trying to understand years later. As a sexual assault survivor, I *really* struggled with the lack of control of my own body when I breastfed my kids- particularly the fact that no matter how much i didn’t want to be touched at any given time, my needs were overpowered by someone else. It devastated me in ways I still haven’t fully recovered from. Also, my youngest was “failure to thrive” until we switched to formula three months in, and he completely transformed into a happy & healthy baby almost immediately. Anyway- yes!!!!

Michael Richardson

(Also, there was a person during the Brexit referendum who popped up in a few news pieces holding a sign saying 'this is like when Geri Halliwell overestimated her viability as a solo artist and left the Spice Girls' - first of all, Geri Halliwell didn't leave the Spice Girls to become a solo artist, but she DID have 4 number one singles in a row! She wasn't unsuccessful by any metric! I have a lot of feelings about this and I think specifically the 'you' in this 'you're wrong about' would be the person who made that sign?)

Rose Goodwin

Alcoholics Anonymous , addiction treatment in general. AA is NOT evidence based and abstinence isn’t the only option!

Ian Hatcher

Sarah talked beautifully about having ADHD herself in the Jan 29 '21 bonus episode. I'd love a whole episode tackling the moral panic dimension too!

Erin Burba

Give me all of these

Kristin Farky

The world needs an episode explaining how little power public school teachers actually have.

Sean McCormick

Yes! This with school choice movements are so important to talk about these days. Combining them is fine too. Especially about abuses/cutting funds and KIPP or the weird curriculums of some if on charter schools or just Betsy DeVos

Lou B.

Not sure if this would actually be interesting haha but I'd love to hear your thoughts on how fatphobia and unscientific anti-fatness in medicine has carried over to the veterinary world... as I'm better understanding that fatness isn't a great measure of health in humans, I'm more and more confused about how seriously I need to take my vet's concerns about my cat being slightly overweight. Are these recommendations based on the assumption that fat=bad in humans? Or is there valid, unbiased science (if that exists) saying pets need to have a certain body fat percentage? Also the history and inappropriateness of terms/memes like "chonk" and "oh lawd he comin" Alternatively, Crossfit lol

Bear Roberts

WEST MEMPHIS THREE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Otherwise I’d really like an episode on Amanda Knox/the Meredith Kutcher case especially given that garbage movie that was clearly based on it that came out last year and kicked off another round of the conspiracies against Knox. Knox def deserves to join the maligned women club. And honestly I think there’s some other “true crime” (which is to say the way you do true crime which is so different from mainstream true crime I struggle to call it that) cases that could benefit from getting the YWA non-fear-mongering and grounded in reality treatment like JonBenét Ramsey, Pam Smart and the Natalie Holloway disappearance and especially one on Amy Mihaljevic. Otherwise I think some of the best episodes are the ones that address a broader social phenomenon/situation. I keep relistening to the Murder, Gangs, and Shaken Baby Syndrome episodes the most. So more like those would be really cool. Don’t have the best list for these but like Christian Nationalism/The spread of the Evangelical Right, the erosion happening regarding adults rights to interact with adult material online (or maybe just straight up one on Sex Work) in the aftermath of SESTA/FOSTA.

Katrine Maritvold

If you’d like a Scandinavian You’re Wrong About, you can do an episode on Sture Bergwall, aka Thomas Quick - The serial killer that never was. (Research tip: Swedish journalist Hannes Råstams documentary and book «Thomas Quick: The Making of a Serial Killer» )

Michael Richardson

But also: I think one of the things I get from You're Wrong About is a reassurance that, as often as moral panics happen, they do run their course (even if some of them do come back, in a different form). I'd love to see the framework of something like the Satanic Panic applied to the current moral panic around trans people, especially in the UK - and maybe use that to figure out how it might run it's course, and what might be useful?

Rachel

parenting advice and rules and how they have evolved and changed over time - in positive and negative ways. so much to talk about! breastfeeding, formula, baby food/feeding trends, developmental milestones, screen time, etc.

Sarah DeMaria

Charter schools - are they really offering students and parents “a choice?” Do they get better test scores than public schools? Who benefits from their existence?

es arg

THE TITANIC

Bear Roberts

Seconded! And that gives you an in to also talking about the spread of far-right evangelicalism/the quiverfull movement and their stated purpose to our breed non conservatives so they can literally take over the US.

Margaux Waters

Corsets and stays. Our cultural idea of them is very incorrect

Hayley

Debate???

Sean McCormick

To think I used to love this family when they hate ppl like me 😂😂😳 🏳️‍🌈

Reid Lee

i was just about to say this!

Anna Amoureux

Dungeon and dragons and it’s moral panic. Also I would love an episode on the mountain meadows massacre.

Rachel Casey

These seem like good suggestions for Michael's other podcast, Maintenance Phase!

Samantha Owen

And the extreme pressure put on libraries to make up for a lack of effective social services despite the fact that we're not actually trained that way! Instead of putting money into community services, the idea seems to be that the library will figure out how to do it for free.

Sarah Ellis

please talk about chernobyl!!!

April Levins

Eva Peron vis a vis the musical Evita!

funnyletter

Uptalk, vocal fry, "like", and other peevery about women's speech. Back when I was a grad student in linguistics a reporter came to interview us about the lab I worked in that was doing research on the dialect in our region and managed to produce an article 90% focused on vocal fry even though we didn't even study that and I am still grumpy about it.

Tara Moore-Lawless

Some of these are seconding earlier comments, some are mine: Kony 2012, pit bulls/bully breeds, the “Dark Ages,” Baby Jessica, IQ tests, the first Thanksgiving, mediums/psychics, the Space Race, early days of AIDS. It’d be cool if there was an episode that covered a few different things that are interesting but not enough story for a whole episode.

Katie P

Kony 2012 PLEASE I need to know where all the money I spent on t shirts and wristbands in 10th grade actually went. Also AA and Big Alcohol and the disease-ification of alcoholism.

Emma Warren

This may not be quite in the vibe of the podcast but there are many very mainstream, very wrong takes on Israel-Palestine that could do with being challenged.

Sara Stevens

Figure skating drama and how various Olympic level sports anti-doping and governing bodies work

Sean McCormick

Do the Flint Water Crisis! Omg I’m so pissed at Rick Snyder and everything and the state Michigan that Sarah, please bring attention to our proud city and how much hate it’s gotten 😭

Mckenna Bailey

I'm not sure how "wrong" people are, but kinda like the homelessness episodes, there is a lot of nuance and insidious forces in the Sackler family/Purdue Pharma and the epidemic they've created (but are now safe from any consequences because of a recent bankruptcy court ruling). Also, Hurricane Katrina didn't hit New Orleans and I think that's something a lot of people don't know. But that might be a two second episode/a bad suggestion.

Sarah Arehart

Yes! And also the Sad Puppies attempt to ruin the Hugo awards

Loretta m

Rebecca Black and the Ark Music factory

gretchen vetter

It feels like there has been enough time that Trickle Down Economics can get the debunking it deserves

Janelle Miley

Seconding this! Would also like to see maybe a broader look into dog breeding and/or “designer” dog breeds

Lauren Bartram

The history of the tattoo ban in NYC 😬

Caitlin Ray

I would love an episode about the Americans with Disabilities act and what it means (and does NOT mean--aka "drive by lawsuits"). I get told all the time that inaccessibility is "illegal now" or that disabled folks can "call the ADA" to report things...no. That's not how it works at all!

gretchen vetter

Appalachia as a region. So tired of the inbred, hillbilly trope. I’d love a deep dive into the exploitation of the people there by the coal companies, and how they are looked over so often even though the region is in serious need.

Sarah Arehart

Radium Girls + the Triangle shirtwaist fire would be great jumping-off points for a discussion about how women's bodies (especially immigrant women) have historically been abused by companies they work for

Amy Veeres

And don't get me started on both's role in making trolling a republican platform...

Alice

Online therapy/therapists--both through apps and social media; non-profits/development/fundraising work. I second the Big Alcohol/AA suggestion as well!

Angélica M V

The Bermuda Triangle, I really need to know how that myth started and then faded away

Natalie Crespo

Michael’s podcast Maintenance Phase has you covered on this, I think!

John Davy

Hinkley Had A Vision

Janelle Miley

They talked about The Chicks in their May 3rd episode, “The Chicks vs. The Iraq War”

Babe the Fat

Collaborate with We Go High NC or other cannabis justice orgs to talk about the harms of cannabis prohibition. Can be multi parter in mass incarceration series too, or you're wrong about drugs series lol

Jackson Blum

I do miss the OJ series, though it wouldn't have the same energy without Mike's reactions.

Richard Saffran

Helen Keller...once you get past the courageous-disabled-person story you find the radical socialist who today would be targeted by Fox News

Nico Peruzzi

YouTube content farms! I feel like there’s a dark underbelly there that people don’t know about. Also Anne Reardon would be a great collab for that

John Davy

John Kerry being openly right on Iran-Contra and related issues on the US/Central America being collectively memory-holed could also probably use more attention.

Nico Peruzzi

Also maybe it’s not enough for a full episode but I feel like Simone Biles pulling out of the Olympics is something that could use a lot of clearing up for some people.

Claire Gaiefsky

An episode (or perhaps a series) on US labor movements, eg: coal strikes, battle of the overpass/ford hunger march, Reagan vs. air traffic controllers and the like. Also, maybe bonus episode where Sarah and her exorcism theories watches a few episode of the bonkers CBS show Evil because I imagine she'd have THOUGHTS

John Davy

A Delia Derbyshire/Rosemary Tonks episode would be niche but fun

Haley

Casey Anthony — not cause I know we’re wrong about it but because I don’t know much about the case and would love to hear your deep dive

Caroline Quick

Would love an episode on the modern First Ladies: Michelle, Melania, Hillary etc & how their public perception molded their husband’s presidencies 💜 hope you’re having a great day, Sarah 💜

Yasmine Lipsey

Recycling programs or lack there of. The trickery they have created along with the lies.

Paige

Tree planting programs - like big "we're going to plan X MILLION TREES to fight climate change" type initiatives and all the ways they've gone wrong or distracted from other climate change solutions

Sara

There’s a Decoder Ring episode about it too :)

Nicole B

Can you PLEASE do an episode on the coining of the phrase “wife beater” to describe the white tanktop undershirt

Reid Lee

-The Indian Act in Canada/residential schools - the lavender scare -fandoms specifically of people like taylor swift, justin Bieber, one direction. they get whacky.

Rebecca Sax

The Pinkerton detective agency! Please please please the Pinkertons! Company of goons that was involved in all of America’s shady stuff for at least a hundred years.

Sara

Book burning/banning. Or those terrible FB “memes” that are like “alert! If someone flashes their high beams at you! It’s a gang initiation!” Like, where/who do those come from? And if it’s not happening, why make them?

Wim

also method acting lol there's so many layers of weirdness & mythos there

Sarah Arehart

Yes! There is so much guilt-tripping about individual household recycling, but big industries have a much larger impact

Hannah Woodward

I want the rest of the OJ Simpson trial series! It can continue to roll out slowly and with many other episodes in between, I just want to make sure we haven't forgotten about it.

Archie

It would be fun to have an episode dedicated to many small things that don't warrant full episodes on their own, like "the average person swallows X number of spiders per year in their sleep" or "If you swallow gum it stays in your body for five years"

Mallory Johnson

May not be your usual fare - but how about skincare? Folks like Jessica Defino have been diving into the science of our skin that has made me completely rethink what our skin actually "needs." Think it feels really relevant right now, as all we hear about are 10-step skincare routines, and skincare is generally really trendy and a big moneymaking industry.

Archie

Second idea: Myths about wild baby animals, since it's starting to be spring and sometimes people who mean well can accidentally harm or even kill "abandoned" fawns by taking them away from their homes, or fledglings who are on the ground but being watched by their parents as they learn to fly

Jennifer Boeder

Would love Sarah's deep dive on Chappaquiddick, J. Edgar Hoover, the Tylenol murders, Henry Ford (and the Ford-ification of our educational system) and of course any further OJ. Is it too soon for Brett Kavanaugh? Or a UFO update?

Lisa Brundage

This would also need to cover how parents are often *discouraged* from breastfeeding in both subtle and overt ways, while "breast is best" gets lip service and very few physicians and health care providers are actually trained in human lactation. Formula is a necessary product but also unethically marketed. Calling breastfeeding a "scam" is going to be just as triggering for a lot of parents as it is to say that you have a moral obligation to breastfeed; some parents (like me) have mental health issues that are *positively* affected by breastfeeding. If this were going to be an episode, it should also go into how ostracized and shamed parents who choose to breastfeed past certain arbitrary ages can be. This could be a great episode, but it would also be REALLY hard to do well.

Loretta m

Excellent! Thanks! :)

josie

adam lanza!

Ruth Tillman

but also -- eugenicist! There's layers to the "You're Wrong About" onion here!

Ellie B

Moon landing conspiracies and why they persist!

Soraya

The Dark Ages: would love to see you bring a historian on to talk about how and why that's a reductive and bigoted way of describing that period of history!

Nemo

I don't know if it's been said up the thread but Prohibition would be an interesting one

Shannon Smith

Pit bulls. What's the real 411 about the reported 911s?

WA Gal

MLMs, they are pyramid schemes disguised as businesses and prey on vulnerable people. Most people don't know companies like Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Scentsy, Beach body, color street, are actually MLMs.

Ewan Velázquez

I'm a history of Mexico teacher and there's just so many You're Wrong Abouts (like the US-MX war and how Texas joined the US) so I'd be really happy if you did something related to my country or culture. If not, I'd love some of the previously teased ideas like the Titanic and Britney.

Caroline Cox

Yes! My friend literally wrote a book about this! Shaping Femininity by Sarah Bendall

Kate D

The 27 Club or famous curses (ie: cursed films - The Exorcist/Twilight Zone etc or the Kennedy family, Tutankhamen’s tomb).

Anna Börner

Lindsey Lohan in particular, maybe!

Hayley

There is some discourse on YouTube about debate bros! But think you could bring an interesting perspective

Hayley

Reality Tv would be good

Eleanor

JonBenet Ramsey!!!!!

Kate Mercer

I really love your discussions of famous murders or murderers where you quietly dismantle the idea of psychopathy. So more of those?

Hannah Woodward

Seconding the first Thanksgiving and the history of when Thanksgiving became an official national holiday and what is taught about Thanksgiving in schools.

Anne Simmons

Popular song meanings. I’ve seen couples list “I’ll Be Watching You” by Sting as the first dance at their wedding 😳 I’m sure there are some songs that I love but have completely misinterpreted!

Emily Hewitt

Doping in general! Or the Olympics in general! Or the Larry Nassar scandal!

Brendan Martin

This might not fit into the usual format of the show, but since moral panics have featured in many YWA episodes, I'd be interested in information to cope with and combat them. How do they end? Do they end? Is there something that works that I can do?

ChimesAway

Chris Ofili's painting "The Holy Virgin Mary" and the Sensation exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999. There was a Giuliani moral panic because the painting incorporated elephant dung and got called "anti-Catholic". We're not wrong about Giuliani, but I think most people still don't really know the truth about the artwork and its take on its subject matter. Generally, I think a look at any of the many moral panics around art in the late 80s and 90s (Piss Christ and the NEA, bans on Robert Mapplethorpe, Dread Scott's "What is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag", etc) would be fantastic.

Cora Bennett

There's still some women who need a "You're Wrong About" moment. Like, Cleopatra, Billie Holiday, and Amy Winehouse come to mind. Wallis Simpson seems to be another blamed for destroying society all on her own.

A.K.

The US Space Force! A lot of people who speak to me have a lot of misconceptions about what its role is and is not when it's really a logical progression as space became a warfighting domain (sounds scary but is more complex than the name lets on). The role of the Space Force actually took on a lot of work/missions spread among all the other branches that have long existed. Also, there are other countries (RU for one) that have their own version of this that predates the U.S. So, it's not an entirely novel concept. Another neat thing to look at would be the Apollo-Soyuz Docking Mission. I feel like a lot of people think of it as the beginning of international cooperation in Space (and it certainly was the first joint crewed mission) but it was actually played a huge role in the Cold War as a form of détente. Which is kind of wild considering how tense things were. The last idea (not space-related) is Alcohol Consumption Standards! This might be a fun crossover with Decoder Ring or Maintenance Phase but I feel like there is a lot of mystery that surrounds those standards. Why do they differ greatly from country to country?! Where did it come ? I know nothing about it.

A.K.

Omg and on that note, Bill Gothard!!! I feel like he played a huge role in that movement

Emily Meyers

I would like to suggest you do a podcast on the 1991 Tailhook Scandal. It has all the making of a YWA episode: innocent women maligned in the media for seeking justice, gross misogyny, surprise appearances by Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and Senator John McCain, a subsequent made-for-tv movie featuring Rip Torn (available in full on youtube), and MANY Senate Committee meetings. I learned about it in a 400-level history course on Modern American History, and it managed to lie dormant in my brain until I was re-listening to your podcast about Jessica Hahn and Tammy Faye (CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE). If it would help, I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to assist in research or compiling helpful links. I have a B.A. in history and women & gender studies (I graduated in 2013, I'm sure my grammar is awful) and LOVE doing deep dives. It would really be an honor to assist in any way.

Sierra DeMers

I would so appreciate a Jane Fonda episode. I can’t believe in the year of our lord 2022 I am still defending this woman from war crime accusations.

Katryn Adams

As a former 90s art student, I think this is an excellent idea!

Kate Mercer

A discussion about the law and order franchise may also be interesting.

Michele Gardner

I always enjoy your maligned women episodes! What about Courtney Stodden?

Grace M

Second this!

Katie Collins

The founding fathers. These men get hoisted on pedestals as "super human" yet they had very problematic behaviors, beliefs and values. (Like the fact slavery being made illegal WAS originally in the declaration of independence but it was removed to appease south Carolina.)

ciarra ✿

The Pam and Tommy sex tape!! I didn’t even know that was a thing until the Hulu show

Caroline Cox

More figure skating drama please! And how women’s figure skating has gotten so much more toxic in recent years. ALSO the 2002 judging scandal in pairs skating.

Sophie Desmond

I'd love another maligned woman episode! or series!

Sophie Desmond

oh I'd love an Amy Winehouse episode!

Jennifer Way

Sinéad O'Connor, Martha Stewart, JK Rowling/TERFs (we're right about them though). DARE (I remember getting a booklet that included the post–Pulitzer stripped "Jimmy's World" article from WaPo), the Black Panthers, VC Andrews (bio or her bananas oeuvre)

Nicola

I mean it probably depends where you live, but in the UK at least, support services have been slashed to the bone. People might be encouraged to breastfeed but there’s little support to help them do it. I’d love to see a nuanced discussion of the politics of breastfeeding and how formula became the norm to the extent that it seems impossible to make an informed choice (without feeling at least a little judged). Calling it a “scam” feels like it really leans into that judgmental territory.

Jorie Slodki

Crossover episode with Maintenance Phase about White Potatoes

Elsi Dawson

You're Phase About Potatoes.

Laura Southcott

I would love for Sarah to tell me what to think about pit bulls - is there solid evidence that "bully breeds" are inherently more aggressive than other dog breeds? How much does the owner's behaviour affect temperament? Or an episode about purebred animals in general and how humans are selecting for traits that cause actual harm to the animals.

Meg Taylor

The American myth of the The Roaring '20s deserves the YWA treatment. Lots of parallels to right now, too (unfortunately)

Chaston Kome

As a Columbia, Missouri native, I would love one on the Concerned Student 1950 protests at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) and the fallout from that that rocked campus and the city in 2015. Feels like a world away from the post-George Floyd world we live in now. Lots of narratives there, I’ve mostly heard the townie narratives which are not particularly supportive of the protestors and their aims, even if they are supportive of similar causes.

Lily B

I second episodes on Britney and Amy Winehouse / any other maligned women. I'm also interested in other moral panics - how about teen pregnancy, binge drinking, and/or a bigger topic of class wars and demonisation of those on benefits/welfare (chavs/ASBOs are definitely British terms but you'd probably find looking into them interesting). Also for fun, I'd love an episode on the Loch Ness Monster or some other such phenomena, UFOs etc. Thanks for still making the show, you're the best ❤

Axel H.

Going with the theme of big stories of the 90s, I’d like to see an episode about the Waco Siege and the Branch Davidians and/or Ruby Ridge. All the big sieges of the 90s lol. These are topics I don’t know much about and would love to learn more.

Carol Weirich

Bring Jamelle Bouie back to talk about … anything jamelle bouie wants to talk about!

Molly

YESSS!

Molly

Brit! Ney! Spears! Brit! Ney! Spears!

Rebecca Willmer

If you're talking about The Eyes of Tammy Faye, it's on HBO Max right now! Watched it over the weekend. Unfortunately, it barely even mentions Jessica Hahn. But it was still interesting.

Kaitlin Gossett

NUCLEAR POWER! How it actually works, how little waste is generated, how safe it is, and the US Gov't policies that helped turn communities and environmentalists against it. PS: nobody talks about radioactive waste from fracking.

Caroline Sinders

is there anyway to bring in a friend of the show to finish up OJ? That would be amazing! Or if you're ever looking to do a 'you're wrong about' online harassment, I'd love to help y'all with that!

Olivia Berez

A more modern day topic could be the Troubled Teen Industry. My friend and I got lucky and had good experiences at the one we went to, but it sounds like a lot of them are abusive, or were until they got shut down. But I’d also love to hear an Amy Winehouse episode!

Molly

There's a really good Playboy docu-series on A&E right now. I'm curious if a YWA episode would have much/any new insight.

Rebecca Willmer

Wow, fantastic list. I want all of these!

Coco

was just about to suggest the same thing!

Ulysses

The idea that it is in people’s natures to act selfishly and compete with each other in crisis. this idea is the backbone of a lot of the bullshit ideas of why the world is the way it is that I was taught as a child, and I experience it as a big part of white culture as it was taught to me. It’s really bugged me ever since hurricane Katrina happened when I was 18 and I got to see how people turned out for each other. I think there have been great studies debunking it over the last 10-20 years. Also Go Fund Me as the American insurance plan is another great example of how wrong this idea is.

Keira Andrews

Fanfic! It's come a long way in public perception and acceptance, but many still sneer at it and don't understand why people write and read it. E.g. Diana Gabaldon (Outlander) saying people were trying to profit off her characters, when that is really not at all what fanfic is about at its heart.

Coco

could we have mike back for the oj episodes so they are consistant?

Coco

Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! How they are basically bought by studios and have no actual merit

Katryn Adams

Anything about Islam and the stereotypes and scaremongering in the US and Europe about Muslims.

RNGretchen

Logged in to suggest the same thing! This was huge in Texas. Wonder if it was a large enough nationwide.

Zackary Tyman

I’d like to see an episode (or series) on the AIDS epidemic: The Reagan Administration’s initial response, global anti-LGBTQ sentiment, the toll it took in Africa, how/when did public perception change over time, etc.

Ulysses

nerdy archaeologist fights about findings and their meaning. Love that stuff. A crossover with the person from the Jewitches podcast about their July 19th 2021 episode about the history of Jews and witchcraft.

Rebecca Willmer

Yes! I was thinking the same. I'm really curious about what was true and what was fiction in the HBO show as well.

Caitlin Olsen

You’re Wrong About Infidelity Highlights include: Psychology of Self-Betrayal Betrayal Trauma + PTSD Why People Cheat + Why People Stay After Being Cheated On Plot Twist: Systemic Betrayal Trauma We Are All Both the Abused + the Abuser email me cmo.mft@gmail and I can tell you sooooo much more

Hannah Miller

No topic suggestions but I’d love to hear you teach someone else about another topic, Sarah! I miss that 🥲

Charles

As a Geneticist, I've always been interested in someone tackling the satanic-panic-esque rhetoric around GMOs. Also nuclear power and the Trojan horse letter would be fun!

Amanda Mae

Robert Smalls! And perhaps the idea of Black Civil War soldiers and their involvement and how that gets misconstrued.

Leigh Kramer

Check out Just Like Us: The Tabloids That Changed America! It's a podcast on Ringer Dish and only 4 episodes in. It's been super fascinating.

Scott Hall

As things were getting miserable in 2020, I recall a friend posting a poll of topics. Although it didn't win, having the Disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III listed was what introduced me to the show.

Sylvie

Keen for some more maligned women of the 90s and early 2000s!

Abigail Crawford

Jonbenet Ramsey! I was so young when it happened that I never really feel like I got a good perspective of how everything went down

Cory R

The genre of documentaries (their surprising start as a fiction genre and how many are not so different today)

AnyaYikes

The Anthrax attacks! I’m relistening to the DC sniper eps and you mention that it would make a good ep!

Tenille Dittman

Hi Jennifer - back in August 2018 there was an episode on Dare - it was great

Elizabeth Jardina

Maia Szalavitz would be the perfect guest for this!

AF

You’re Wrong About Farms with Dr Sarah Taber

Nilgun Erkoc

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey

Mandi Valentine

Seconding fanfic as a topic and adding Jerry Springer!

Elizabeth Jardina

The video game historian Carly Kocurek would be an amazing guest for a GamerGate ep

Robin Young

Would love a short rant about J.D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy, and the BS positions he’s adopted since becoming a political candidate 😂

Karly McMillan

This would be fascinating! People i know who cheated (and cheated chronically) mostly did it because they didn't know how else to end a relationship

Robin Young

You might like the Decoder Ring episode called Sad Jennifer Aniston!

Sarah

Continuing the ‘bimbo’ conversations.. Pamela Anderson. I would like to know more than what the media (and the new tv series) tells us about her

Karly McMillan

If Michael wanted to come back for an episode some time down the line, this should be the topic

Alexandra McCullough

I’d love to hear Sarah’s takes on news topics I barely understood to be awful growing up like No Child Left Behind, the Iraq War, the rise and influence of Scientology. P.S. Thank you for all your hard work! This podcast has kept me going through the pandemic and I’m excited to see how it’ll continue to evolve.

Robin Young

Also the shadowy conservative organizations that are behind many states trying to pass similar bills all in one big push. More people need to know that’s what’s driving it, not necessarily a groundswell in public opinion that leads to legislation.

Meg Taylor

Seconded as someone who is extremely familiar with ADA/ANSI 117.1. I wish more people knew how silly and counterproductive the oversight and enforcement mechanisms are

Roo

Amanda Knox! A lawyer called her an “enchanting witch” in court. The press called her “foxy knoxy”. She spent 4 years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit because *misogny* P.S loving all the new episodes, the amityville horror ones were some of my all time favourites 😊

Beth Harrison

There's a very good episode of Bad Sport on Netflix about this, and I believe a documentary from Tara Lipinski and her husband is coming soon.

Mary Greathouse

I would love a you’re wrong about…the nursing shortage! As a nurse I hear a ton about this but I also see so many people moving to industry jobs, going to advanced practice, going to insurance companies, or leaving the field totally to stay at home (more cost effective with daycare) or to totally change careers. What my union rep keeps saying is that, it’s not that there aren’t too few nurses - there are too few nurses willing to work in these situations. Also, weaving something in there about how the travel nurses making what I make as a staff nurse in 2.5 months in one week and how that can’t possibly be profitable for hospitals? Or maybe it is? What even ARE the economics? I would just be so amped to learn more about this and whether there’s truth to any of these headlines!

Karly McMillan

Psychopaths, sociopaths, and narcissists. You've sprinkled your thoughts into a couple episodes. Such a loadbearing element of true crime narratives, it would be interesting to know the whole history (eugenics probably) and its popular conception

Michael Tofias

You’re wrong about Stan Lee with guest Abraham Riesman.

Amy S

Thirding fanfic and AO3!

Elizabeth Jardina

Is acid rain still happening?? Did we fix acid rain?

Robin Young

Yes! And on a related note - the policies that cities can adopt to actually help create affordable housing vs. the ones that only appear to help but contribute to harmful dynamics in the long run.

Robin Young

I wonder about this, too!

Aidan McCarthy

Lindy Chamberlain, for a very grim maligned woman story

Beth Harrison

I'm a vet so this is a slightly niche area of interest, but the pet food industry broadly or grain-free dog food specifically. Pet food companies have made my job much more difficult because of slick advertising campaigns stating that dogs should be fed like either wolves or humans or maybe both, when dogs are in fact neither of those things. Not to mention that grain-free diets have caused serious health issues in ways that we're still trying to understand.

Clare I

A history of contraceptives and womens health related to birth control in general. Like the history of how it's been marketed to the public, how the pill has changed over time and what the actual side effects are/aren't. I don't know a lot but I feel like there's got to be a lot to uncover there simply because of *the patriarchy*

Joanna M

I’d love an episode on that whole Kony 2012 thing

Molly

The space race! I know the technology part might be out of the YWA wheelhouse, but the larger systems of the US/Soviet space programs are fascinating and YWA would be great at talking about them

Sarita

I agree ^^ Kony 2012 would be a good “YWA” ep!

Keith Benoit

Fame. In particular, mini fame or micro fame, like that of, say, a popular podcaster. What's it like to go from being passionate about something, feeling like you have something to say, to having your opinion eagerly sought by others, perhaps on topics with which you might not be comfortable/knowledgeable, and having your heretofore unheard opinions suddenly becoming part of the conversation, even the zeitgeist.

Audrey Bilodeau Fontaine

You do maligned women so well, I would love an episode about Sinead O'Connor and the "Fight the real enemy" moment

Alana Cuellar

-nu metal -ethical consumption -Stephen King -study abroad/peace corps/international volunteering -the democratic party -American Kennel Club/purebred dog culture Xo love all you do!

Sarah Greene

Ebola “Having It All” (Lean In/Girlboss Culture) Pocahontas Helen Keller Bird Flu Mad Cow Disease Cloning Sigmund Freud 27 Club Jonbenet Ramsey Investigation

Robin Young

This would be so helpful! It’s so hard to navigate the recommendations - my dog trainer said my dogs should absolutely be on a completely raw, meat-only diet and that I can’t trust my vet because they’re owned by pet food conglomerates in the same way opioid producers influences doctors. Help 😅

Megyn Norbut

Electric Shock Therapy and esp it’s use to control and/ or suppress women. “Female Hysteria”, I think you’ve touched on this one briefly in a previous episode.

Ames Grawert

The 1990s meme that people in prison were especially litigious and flooding the courts with bullshit claims. In fact, prison claims continued to be filed at the same rate (that is, claims per person). It's just that a shit-ton more people were in prison. So rather than deal with the consequences -- make prison better, expand the federal judiciary so they could deal with the claims -- Congress created a narrative, largely credulously repeated in law school textbooks today, that some new legal doctrine needed to be created to shut the courthouse doors on these (according to them) whiny litigants. The result is a series of laws that makes it very, very hard to challenge a wrongful conviction or unconstitutional prison conditions.

Abigail Crawford

FYI y'all all have incredible ideas, misunderstood history nerds are my happy place

sam tapes

i think something like mk ultra would overlap a LOT with your other topics (especially the satanic panic)

melissa m

please invite Dan Olson to talk about anything. im obsessed with his newest video about NFTs "line goes up", and also his "in search of a flat earth"

Paloma June

Mary Mallon, or "Typhoid Mary" could be an episode. My public health professors often brought her up to talk about ethics and communication in terms of how much she knew about typhoid, how public health authorities treated her, and the police power of public health authorities.

Beth Harrison

If I'm owned by Big Pet Food, my check got lost in the mail a long time ago. BRB, gotta go call Hill's to see if they can direct deposit instead. 🙄

Emily Riebeek

I second the troubled teen industry. There is a lot of stuff to talk about there

Victoria Celeste Cota

YES!! I also remember a similar show Jon and Kate Plus 8 that had lots of drama bc the parents split. Idk if that would fit into the same episode but could be interesting & some overlap!

Emily Riebeek

This would be a really good bonus ep I just want to hear her chatting about this

Paloma June

"Maligned woman of the 1900s"

Victoria Celeste Cota

I also think about this a lot. I was so young at the time but I remember because it was all over TV. Bc I was too young to understand, I wanna learn now why it was SO HUGE

Jim Hummel

I posted this one on Twitter. I am not sure there is a "something we are wrong about" aspect to it, but maybe it's a good one for a Patreon episode? I was just thinking recently about how I used to watch a lot of daytime television psychic mediums in the early 2000s. There was an explosion of them back then starting with James Van Praagh. His cold reading and hot reading techniques, which are obviously total bunk, were platformed by the likes of Larry King, Oprah, and the View. This lead to a bunch of imitators like John Edward who had his own show, "Crossing over with John Edward". Van Praagh was even played by TED DANSON (lol) in a mini-series based on Van Praagh. I just feel like it's a topic that would intersect well with some of the running themes of your podcast. You are amazing, btw!

Jim Hummel

Oh man. That's a great idea.

Darby

You're Wrong About: Promising Young Woman, it was the opposite of the feminist classic it promised, prominent because it even won an Oscar for screenwriting

Calla Wilson

Please, tell me more. Because I spend a FORTUNE on a LID dog food each month bc my dog has allergies.

Jennifer Way

And the author, too! Truly weird bio. Plus the whole ghostwriting factory that continued her literary "legacy" after her death.

Sarah Friedman

What’s the deal with Brook Shields?

Stacey Hunt

Anything with Chelsea Webber Smith. You two are great together

Jennifer Way

This could tie in with the West Memphis Three.

Matthew Newton

I feel like Ashlee Simpson might make a good companion to your Jessica Simpson episodes?

Kristin Farky

And Pam Anderson is *extra* maligned because she didn't consent to the sex tape release OR the modern media telling the story around it.

Jasmin

some British cultural moments??

Julia

Lots of really good ideas here… I’d love to hear about Joan Crawford and Mommy Dearest/Faye Dunaway

Rosa Moore

The concept of "false flag operations"--the actual history and how the term is (mis)used today The Kennedys The idea of the "GirlBoss" "Chick lit" of the 90s/2000s

Kiley

Yes I second this, and your comments about the new Hulu series

Isabelle Ballinger

This is so random but toxic shock syndrome. Every woman knows what it is but few men do. Is it real? Is it a thing? Does it represent how we talk about or ignore women’s health or is it an overrepresented rare phenomenon?

Kiley

Seconded I would love this

Glandor Hooverstein

I suggest the Rhinelander vs Rhinelander trial; huge tabloid scandal of the 1920s. A man from one of New York’s richest families secretly marries a nurse of uncertain racial background. When exposed, he sues her for annulment under the dubious cause of ‘racial deception’ and loses! Lots of crazy things to talk about in this trial, from saucy love letters, race panic, a forced public undressing to the jury, an ironic celebrity cameo (Al Jolson) and I think it will fit within the You’re Wrong About purview really well!

Dee Eblen

Omg an Anne Reardon /Sarah Marshall collab would be amazing! The debunking superstars!

Mihaela Dimitrova

OJ continuation but also any digressions you’ve mentioned before

Beth Harrison

I can't give specific advice and I would definitely defer to your vet on that. Limited ingredient/novel protein diets are a really important tool for managing food allergies or intolerances. There are plenty of prescription diets for allergies that are grain-free as a byproduct of the formulation, not because the goal was to be grain-free. For the most part, it's not these diets that are causing issues, but a few boutique brands have emerged as the main ones associated with those health issues. This is very much an ongoing area of research! But basically, for an average, healthy pet, there is nothing wrong with chicken, grain, or whatever is the Evil Ingredient of the moment, and kibble is fine. Dry kibble is not evil, but it is conveniently shelf-stable. Convenience is great! Something is not inherently better because you have to work harder to consume it!

Matty Merritt

It feels like every year or so they debunk the stanford marshmallow test, but...it's still hanging around. Plus the scientist who is famous for it has admitted it's not really legit, but he became famous for this experiment.

Kim

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg - I can help! I have some great research and book suggestions.

Margaret Saigh

Anything related to Christian fundamentalism which I feel like has fascinating dovetails with #girl boss and satanism !

Margaret Saigh

I second this. There’s also a rlly good podcast series called the dream that did like an 8 parter on MLMs. Def recommend it !

August

If Sarah becomes a TSwift fan in the process of that research, I will be thrilled. (Sarah, IDK if this makes sense but I would call her the Alan Menken of pop.)

Julie Fleming

Did you listen to the Trojan horse podcast put out recently by Serial and NY Times? Is definitely worth a listen.

Margaret Saigh

Collab with fundie Fridays Jen of YouTube !!!

Hannah Woodward

Agreed, we need Mike to guest star for the reactions!

Andy Bartholomew

I also have no real idea what happed with JonBenet Ramsay, but I remember her being in the tabloids constantly when I was a kid.

Guy

I’m sure I’m not alone I’m hoping for a conclusion to OJ. I think it would be a fun episode to do one about sayings you’re using wrong, or where the meaning has changed over time, for example the oft cited fact that blood is thicker than water has been changed over time. Pamela Anderson. The general idea of bimbos. The Kardashians/fame culture feels like it could be an episode or series of episodes. Related to the Kardashians I’d love to hear a bonus episode discussing the Kanye West documentary on Netflix, I think there’s a lot to mine from there, and West is an extraordinarily dynamic and complicated person. I’d like to see one about the Oscars, people complain about the movies not being popular and like to cite stuff about how nominated films in earlier years were more popular higher grossing than now, without looking at things like streaming, the diversification of the academy, and the loss of the mid budget film for adults. Oh! And one more, again, maybe a better bonus episode since it’s kind of a listicle type thing, but products that were ripoffs that supplanted the original. It blew my mind when I learned that Oreo was a riff on Hydrox and not the other way around.

Julie Fleming

Hi, thank you for reaching out for topics. Looks like there is enough here for the next few years!! I’m wondering if you might tackle Autism/vaccination. A sensitive topic but one where, idea from one debunked article, has taken off on its own trajectory. Cause of autism is one topic that despite many valid, thorough evidence to the contrary, continues to be hotly debated. From mercury to vaccination and everything in between. Warm regards Julie

Xingcat

So many people use the term "sociopath" with such abandon that I'd love a deep dive into what sociopathy is and isn't, and if our pop culture ideas about it are...well, wrong!

August

Yesssss!

Allie

I know don’t if it’s something most people are necessarily “wrong about” but I would love to hear about Scientology!

August

^^^ This!

Kate

The Manson Family! I have purposely avoided the topic because I remembered you saying it would be an episode one day.

Sarah

They did an ep on this December 2018. I can also recommend the ‘Just the Gist’ podcast for their episode on Lindy. Both such good episodes 😊

claire j

@Robert Solon Hamer - ah, I guess I mean unregulated/unlicensed facilities that are doing more harm than good for the folks who walk through the door looking for help. Often these people are expected to do unpaid labor for the entirety of their treatment or face prison time if someone is court-mandated to attend. I’d really recommend Reveal’s American Rehab series from 2020 on the topic. @Erin Burba that’s incredible! You have a lot to celebrate!

August

Rosemary Kennedy would be such a good one. (Nicole Cliffe as a guest? Also a great idea!)

Casey Cannon

Guy Fawkes, symbolism vs the man, and how an English man who tried to reinstate a catholic regime with a 9 yr old puppet dictator came to represent liberation from oppressive governments

Colleen R Fitzgerald

1. Underdiagnosis of ADHD in women and girls. Sarah and I both have it! 2. Salem witch trials. Scotland killed WAY more “witches.” 3. “You’re Wrong About: Shallow Hal,” with Aubrey and Mike to yell about fat suits and Alex Steed to tell us who the daddy is.

Aidan McCarthy

Omg you're totally right - how could I forget! I will relisten today hehe

August

Such an interesting story, especially re: common misconceptions around memory!

J. Bachman

I would love to hear the rest of the OJ series!

Mel

-Toxic Shock Syndrome tampon panic or the 1990s (ask your moms)

Leah Anderson

Definitely not the only option. But it is a great one for those for whom other options don't work! xoxoxoxox

mienaiKnife

Maybe something to do with the Canadian First Nations? Idk if it’s still so much of a thing since the recent news coverage of the unmarked mass graves in former residential schools, but there’s a persistent misconception about Canada treating our indigenous people way better than the States that I pretty much got debunked for me in this one college Canadian history class. I think Canadians and Americans alike can really benefit from a deconstruction of Canada’s weird reputation of being nicer and more polite, because it’s kind of a white supremacist lie!

Anne

They have done one on autism/vaccination dated 1 Feb 2021. Was a great episode!

Julie Fleming

Thanks for letting me know, Anne, I will look it up.

Allee

The guy who inspired the film Hotel Rowanda. He just got convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 25 years? What happened!?

Delia Barnett

I would love more of OJ Simpson. 911 would be interesting. The rise of the supermodel.

Leah Anderson

-Estrogen in the water (birth control/hormone therapy vs. agriculture) -Endocrine disruptors and products that are unregulated: "Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some plastic bottles and containers, liners of metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides." https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/endocrine/index.cfm -Girls Gone Wild -Low-fat diets -Dan Quayle

Lauren D.

The arc of Naomi Wolf from "The Beauty Myth" to whatever she is now - having so thoroughly misinterpreted her research for "Outrages" that her book release was cancelled by the publisher. She also regularly peddles COVID nonsense and was banned from Twitter. There was also the defending Julian Assange chapter... So, maybe this is more of a "Naomi Wolf is wrong about..." than a "you're wrong about," but also the downward spiral of someone who was a respected feminist icon!

Miranda

I was thinking just today how much I'd love a series on like Joan Crawford/the feud.

Lauren D.

All good ideas but my +1s to peace corps/international volunteering/study abroad and ethical consumption!

Emily Haindl

Please bring back the OJ Simpson trial (maybe Michael could be your guest for that one??)

August

Would love to hear you & Blair and/or Q get together for "You're Wrong About Dog-sledding!"

Michael Murray

The Pinkertons, but their history of union-busting instead of ghostly detective solving.

Meghan Meehan-Draper

Please please do an episode on former NC Senator and Pres candidate John Edwards. We need the scoop on his life, late wife, affair scandal, everything.

Anthony

“Pinkwashing” and the commodification of breast cancer

Sully

🗣 HOMESCHOOLING

Rebecca

Forgive me if this is a repeat, but I think my comment got eaten: if you want to do another religion episode, Fatima (I.e Our Lady of) and/or Traditional Catholicism (I.e. the Mel Gibson brand) would be great jumping off points.

Ulysses

Is this fake? Wtf? I guess I need this episode, lol….

Mackenzie Lombardi

The Three Cups of Tea guy! And/or micro loans and the trend of buying goods made by women from

Jennifer A.

The Menéndez brothers...

Cambria Rose Ruth

The history of abortion care and how it wasn't a religious or political issue pre-Roger Stone!

yes - always heard about them but know nothing

R

a whole YWA Rwanda in general - I have thoughts!

R

I think we all got Amanda Knox wrong....

Mel

why has Bill Clinton never been "me-too'd"? Seriously, I don't know. that would be an interesting discussion.

Doug Newman

Not sure if this has the necessary pop-cultural relevance, but the GM Streetcar Conspiracy. Also, I know there was a Homelessness episode much longer ago than I realized (!), but a public housing episode would be interesting, or a redlining episode. (Yes, I found this show through Mike.) And Hurricane Katrina is long enough ago that it could be a topic, although maybe it's too big for anything other than a multi-episode epic unless it's narrowed down further.

Amiee Flynn-Curran

I literally emailed this a year ago but I'll suggest again - 90's/00's 'mega families' and their ties to the Christian right's plight to become a voting block, political symbols of anti-abortion, homeschooling, and new conservative christianity. Duggars, of course, but also the McCaughey family. I have been working on a book about this casually for a while (I have a PhD in anthropology of Christianity) and it's a deep rabbit hole!

Freya Bauer

Something on the mid-2000s trio Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan?

R

please, please debunk Crossfit so I can share it with my obsessed friends!

Amanda Putz

There's so many great suggestions that I feel bad for offering this: romance novels. There are layers of ywa: the start of mass paperback romances, what's actually a romance, RWA (so many there), the Regency as a time period vs. Regency romances as popularly exemplified by Bridgerton, the art of romance covers, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers and stories and the challenges faced in diversifying who and what is printed, etc. There's a lot and parts are discussed in many different places but it would be interesting to see what and how Sarah approaches it.

Nikki

invention of rock music (sister Rosetta tharpe)

Naomi Kidder

a cleopatra episode would be amazing! i have to imagine there's an expert for you to interview but i feel like anything i learn about her/egyptian history in that era im like yep was wrong about that!

Jennifer Richter

Rosie O'Donnell- I feel like she went from Every 90s Mom's Favorite to a entertainment pariah... and I think it was partially Trumps fault... very vague memories!

Kara

Valerie Plame, the CIA officer who was outed when Bush W. was president. I'm not sure if it's a particularly interesting story, but she's a mildly maligned woman from the early aughts.

April Peterson

Consumer Genetic Ancestry tests (23&Me, Ancestry) not scientific diagnostic but entertainment. other off the wall ideas: The secret cabal between American dentistry and Big Sugar McCarthy-ism / HUAC Wealth extraction within the PIC

Gage Huey

You're Wrong About Neanderthals featuring Rebecca Wraggs Sykes would be Incredible

Kathryn Schreiner

I would love your take on Joan Quigley's career as the Reagan's Astrologer!

April Peterson

This is a good topic. I learned recently how the field of gynocology was invented post 1808 in order to optimize the fertility of enslaved Black woman.

Katie

Edwin Edwards, former governor of Louisiana. Supporters made bumper stickers saying "Vote for the crook. It's important" when he was running against David Duke (no one is wrong about David Duke) and he eventually went to prison for corruption.

Eric Foertschbeck

You’re Wrong About Len Bias. Would be a great episode about the 1980’s war on drugs, college sports, college coverups, and a ton more.

Patrick O

Bring on Carrie Poppy as a guest!

amloth

How about The Corset!!! There is such a wild view of the corset as an oppressor of women and some sort of torture device. It is seen as laced tightly and violently by scores of people (the classic movie scene of cinching someone in a corset and there are like 5 people pulling), the concept that it impedes the organs and causes shortness of breath. When in fact that was NOT the case! Most were made to fit individual women's (AND MEN'S) bodies and were worn in every aspect of daily life. There is also the matter of women rising up in the industry and then miraculously that was when men decided corsets were evil. Hmm.

Charlie

Violence and video games?

TE

-Renee Bach and Ariel Levy’s disgraceful attempt to vindicate her -a whole episode on women in copaganda -Brontosaurus -Big Supplement -the UK Horizon Post Office scandal - hundreds of postmasters/mistresses had their lives totally ruined by false prosecutions due to bad accounting software -Jessica Lynch and Shoshana Johnson -Amanda Knox -Maury Povich’s abusive boot camps for teens -Justin Trudeau’s mother, Margaret Trudeau, who was major tabloid fodder in her day (and his dad dated Samantha from SATC, I just think Sarah would enjoy the whole family)

Sheree Speaks

I would love to hear topics on: -Freud (theories debunked now and how his original theories were actually different than what we've come to know today) - Son of Sam (theories that relate to the Satanic Panic, him not acting alone, Terry Maury's book, and "the Children Cult") -"Abstinence only" cirriculum in schools (how they don't work even though it's still circulating in schools) -The First Thanksgiving (how it's taught in public schools is SO different than how it played out.) Just to name a few! If I think of more I'll throw some out there.

Abby Gillette

For pride month you should do Stonewall or the AIDS epidemic or Harvey Milk!

Sheree Speaks

Insane Clown Posse (although I guess this falls under the category of "Gangs", which you and Mike did an episode on already)

Sheree Speaks

I think it would be interesting to include recent (and way late) efforts to create male birth control and the responses in the trial runs for it.

Kate Makarin

Conservatorships. The Electoral college.

Maya Rowland

I would really love an ep about the CCC. They did so many cool things for the National Parks system but there’s so much racism, classism, and exploitation baked into how they operated.

Annie Kolle

They did Stonewall! And kind of Harvey Milk (The Twinkie Defense). Both great episodes.

Annie Kolle

YWA birth control—how fertility actually works, the history of condoms and the pill, why a male version of the pill has yet to be made/seems unmarketable.

Jessica A

I came here to say this and am so pleasantly surprised it had been said. I would love the Sarah take on Marian apparitions (Medjugorje especially) and all things Catholic, honestly. Ties in so well to the Satanic panic thread.

Mark K

Heavens Gate cult

Rene' Montesino

They already did an episode on the Electoral College - and it was absolutely fabulous ! Episode aired Nov 16, 2020 ‘The Electoral College’

Isabel Marinho

this might sound silly, but an episode on the word "triggered" would make for interesting conversations on internet culture and mental health. i find it fascinating how there was a brief period on the internet wherein the only people using this word as a meme were 4chan users trying to invalidate people with trauma and now it's widely acceptable as a meme! it STILL rubs me off the wrong way and i miss this word that used to allow me to talk succinctly about something that gives me trauma flashbacks and sends spiraling and dissociating...

Isabel Marinho

AN EPISODE ABOUT FURRIES THEY'RE SO MALIGNED AND MOST OF THEM ARE JUST TRYING TO HAVE WHOLESOME FUN 😭

Abby Gillette

Ooh what if they did one on Dan Schnieder

Rene' Montesino

Hmm 🤔 1. Global Aid Industry 2. Manson Family / Murders 3. Philanthropy 4. The Commodification of Breast Cancer 5. The Unabomber 6. The War On Terrorism / Afghanistan Because there are so many amazing topics it’s almost difficult to come up with ideas 💡 — too many to list 😊

Kerrie Murphy

You've kind of been circling the drain on this a little bit but Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. You wouldn't think that the guy who developed Sherlock Holmes would be as gullible AF and yet, here we are.

Jo Alexandria

The high beams thing is in an October 2018 episode called "Urban Legends Spectacular!"

Octopus

I think mike and Aubrey talked about fat suits and shallow Hal on their maintenance phase patreon!

Hope F

I don't know how big of a cultural footprint it had but I love the story of the Biosphere 2 as such a perfect encapsulation of Western Scientific arrogance

Katrina Connor

Are we ever going to get the conclusion to the OJ case?!?! I loved that series and feel like we left on a cliffhanger

Bernadette McConnell

would loooove an episode debunking myths around bras and corsets being a way to "oppress women's bodies" Bernadette Banner has done a video about corsets but bras get a bad rep as well.

Leo Puppytime

I would love an episode about Jaime Escalante, the teacher profiled in the movie ‘Stand and Deliver”. He taught at the high school I went to though left before I arrived and one of my teachers was one of his students from the infamous class (he said he was always asked ‘which one were you?’ and he would always dismissively reply ‘the one with the chickens in the front yard.’). The real controversy that inspired the movie was about an AP Algebra class whose scores were rescinded due to accused cheating. Something about the answers being too similar. The movie creates this rag tag group of kids he has to ‘get through too’ including people who have to be taught basic math using their fingers. It was an underdog story that ignores how kids actually advanced into AP classes and what it was like. The scandal is a 3rd act afterthought in the movie. A few teachers in the math department still after his departure had nothing to say about him but it was clear it was ‘nothing good.’ He left because of his clout from the movie if I remember right. He went on the lead the East LA Republican Party. This was such big story in the 80’s.

R

I am halfway through Jamie's excellent Lolita podcast and I was thinking she could do a guest YWA focusing on what we get wrong about the book. In the annals of maligned women (girls?) she's the OG!

A.S.

OJ!

Valerie Hunt

The Pacific Northwest Tsunami Inundation Zone and the lack of planning by state & local governments.

cate c

Amanda Knox or Casey Anthony. Also that weird NBA menendez brothers trading card

Sam Maloney

So many like what happened to pensions I know it has something to do with Republicans but I’m not sure how they pulled it off. Also the endangered species act and how developers hate it so much that sometimes people have to be very quite about reintroducing species and about how the term species is kinda artificial in the first place and how individual species are now becoming tools to preserve whole ecosystems. Also Policing and Gangs I feel like a lot of people don’t know about sheriff Gangs. If your going for something real time maybe Marjorie Taylor Greene? I feel like the media has written her off as crazy but she seems kinda deliberate in her crazy to me. Finally, I’d love to know if you’ve got any crazy recent stories from writing about the satanic panic!

Eve

@sheree I just read a chapter about Freud for my theories class for my Master’s in Counseling… it’s pretty much exactly what you think it is! 😂😂

Costuming Drama

I have been waiting for a Jonbenet Ramsey episode since the inception of this podcast. But yes, finish the OJ stuff!!

Anna McDuff

Ooh yes, get Anand Giridharadas to cohost a you’re wrong about philanthropy! He’s done some great writing on how rich people use philanthropy as a cheap way to whitewash their reputations.

Sara

Miss Cleo!!! ...and other 1-900 call in people!

Nicole A

Why not the Pam and Tommy video tape? Other ideas: The notion you must drink X ounces of water JFK/Marilyn Monroe The USA and The Holocaust: how much they knew Titanic’s sinking Spanish Flu Bloody Mary/something Tudor related “Labor Shortages” Doping/Steroids/Lance Armstrong

Anna McDuff

Oh yes, this would be fantastic. Americans now are only just getting to grips with the Catholic Church abuses she was protesting. It also feeds into the Magdalen laundries in Ireland, the Tuam childrens home, the murder (or at least manslaughter) of thousands of Irish children, and then from there you can link to all the residential “schools” in America that causes cultural genocide and some actual genocide as so many children didn’t survive them.

Anna McDuff

I would love “You are Wring About the Westminster Dog Show” so much! And it would be such rich territory, it looks so innocent and it’s so very, very not, causing breeds of dog that are barely viable biologically. There’s been a big reaction against pure bread dogs in the UK after the public learned how much they suffer.

Heather Marie Vitale

All for finishing OJ, Pam & Tommy, JonBenet, and Amanda Knox! Also interested in Pam Smart (her husband was my sister's best friend!) OKC bombing Waco/Ruby Ridge 1996 Olympics bombing Hale-Bopp and Heaven's Gate Napster Versace murder Rodney King/LA Riots 2Pac Third Party Candidates (Perot, Nader, Stein, etc.) Dot-Com Bubble

Anna McDuff

Yes, especially the feminist side of prohibition. I once read that prohibition was the answer America came up with to the problem of drunk husbands beating their wives. Since the culture at the time couldn’t fathom the idea of banning husbands, they banned alcohol instead.

Anna McDuff

Oh yes! James Rebanks might be a great guest for this as he is eloquent on the need to achieve biological diversity, rather than planting ten million pine trees in a sterile forest and calling it a job well done.

Jo Swenson

I would LOVE a multi-part series on Manson with Rachel Monroe

Anna McDuff

Oh yes, Recycling is a web of lies devised to keep us from collectively pursuing the big companies that cause most pollution. And consuming like good little economic units rather than mending what we already have. Especially plastic recycling which increasingly looks that it isn’t possible in any meaningful way.

Michaele Cooper

OMFG yes yes please! And all those other “real diary of a troubled teen” nonsense books! “Jay” was one about practicing witchcraft!

Samantha Palmer

Sarah's hot takes. Is a hot dog a sandwich? Is Nickleback good? Cereal first or milk first? Let me know.

Cat Meier

Surya Bonaly!!! And racism in figure skating in general.

Also, I saw several people suggest a Your Wrong About episode on fanfic/AO3. If you decide you want to tackle that, I was around/involved with the early history of the OTW/AO3, including a stint on the Board, and I can *totally* hook you up with good sources there.

Marion Barry! FBI persecution is real.

Shannon Godwin

They’ve covered rainbow parties actually, a long way back! It’s part of the “Urban Legends Spectacular” episode from 10/18

Shannon Godwin

Omg I know Sarah too! What a small world!

Mae

this is SUCH a great suggestion

Shannon Godwin

I think this would be really interesting also because I feel like people don’t know it’s still used today and can actually be really effective. I have a family member who underwent ECT and it helped when nothing else had.

Caterina Misale

What a great idea for an episode. Talk about a rich text!

Miriam

Well, everybody else already answered, but… the Unemployment Insurance system! You probably heard in the news about Unemployment being “extended” with different bills in Congress across 2020 and 2021. Not true if you (like me) worked in two different states in the 18 months before the pandemic started. The state of Virginia implemented a new website last October, it was taken down in November, supposedly went back online in January(?). But I’ve been trying to access it (to get a 1099 for 2021) for the last 3 weeks and I think it may be fully down, but they are pretending it can be accessed. I would really like to know if a single person has been able to sign in since November… I sent in an appeal in June that they appear to have lost. (And many other issues that were documented in local newspapers, not just my personal bad experiences!)

Frankie

I’ll never stop wanting the OJ trial series to be finished. Although I agree Amanda Knox would be great, especially since her open letter about the awful movie that came out based on the case. You could even reach out to her for an interview.

fiona sangster

i would be really keen to hear a full episode about the psychopath/sociopath myth. i’ve pieced together bits from related episodes but a full deep dive would be chefs kiss ❤️

Nicole A

Oh I’d also like to add maybe a show on Jane Fonda and Vietnam

notthis.mp3

since everything else has already been mentioned 😅 ; the Casey Anthony case? i’d love to hear sarah’s thoughts on the second biggest american (?) media case!

Ari

Sinead O’Connor on SNL the AIDS epidemic the Menendez brothers

R

I was wondering about Rachel Dolziel (sp) I feel like I never really got the whole story?

Linda Maleh

This was covered extensively in the recent Netflix series about her

Andrea Azem Rumzis

I think an episode on Fred Hampton and/or the Black Panthers would be incredible. Also would love the OJ deep dive to return!

MuntJack

There was talk of a Rasputin episode in the Anastasia episode. A black panther episode would also be great. As a British listener I think an episode about what American’s get wrong about Margaret Thatcher would also be really good, Americans talk about her like she’s a feminist icon. I’m thinking of the Iron Lady Movie in particular, but in the uk she’s seen by feminists as a gate keeping girl boss who held the movement back.

Laura Nichols

My family is full of people in the medical field, and yes there are definitely nurses who are so fed up and burned out that they have totally switched careers because they can't handle the nightmare anymore.

Decodering did a great mini series on Jane!

Haley

I believe he mentioned wanting to do it way back?

Alexandra Mitterer

Witch hunts, corsets, any of those historical pre-1900 things people just absolutely always get wrong

Amy Crane

Pamela Anderson! Not just the sex tape but more about her life as a maligned woman and how she was treated during the sex tape controversy vs how Tommy was. And the projection (or lack thereof) of their careers as a result!

Mary Naughton

The cost of healthcare... There is a narrative that we will have to pay (even) more for healthcare because of aging and the use of expensive technologies. And there is some truth that these will add costs. But the most effective interventions are still the cheapest-primary care and preventive medicine, having access to a range of less intrusive treatments means fewer people will end up needing the very expensive drugs and technology capital is focused on developing (some people will, these things certainly have a place but some of us are being prematurely steered towards them).

Rene Marie Becker

Just amplifying some other great suggestions here: - Birth Control/"Abstinence Only"/Sex Ed - Philanthropy - Education Movies where they have to "get through" to the "tough inner city youth" (someone above recommended Stand and Deliver, for example) - the American education system in general - ladies garments like bras, corsets, stays, and just weird attitude towards (typically feminine) clothes - speaking of clothes! Fast fashion - The Oscars/awards in general - and please finish the OJ Series (Would Micheal come back for some guest appearances for those?) KEEP UP THE AMAZINGNESS SARAH!

Annemarie Taylor

Yes! Especially what a piece of garbage Reagan was!

Brynn

Menendez brothers!

Hannah Rochau

I've seen at least 3 OpEds in major publications in the last 6 weeks bemoaning the overuse of the word 'trauma' by the youths in TikTok/Instagram/popular parlance. I'd love a takedown of the apparent boomer nightmare that young people might - gasp - be okay with talking about trauma and mental health generally.

Ryan Kelly

Michelle Carter— the teenage girl convicted in the “texting suicide case” in the mid 2010s

Pam Schott

"grain free diets" for dogs- a complete marketing ploy, and these diets are now being linked with severe heart disease in dogs. From a veterinarian.

The Donner Party! A couple years ago I was going to Google it and decided for no reason you'll one day just do the episode to explain it to me. Here's all the suggestions in my notes app list for YWA: Donner Party Broken windows policing IQ Lead poisoning radiation exposure HIV Iraq War Jon Bennet

Katie McNally

The homeschooling movement Abstinence only education (and how it’s contributed various other cases like Elizabeth Smart) IQ No Child Left Behind

Amy Moorman

This is a great one - there are several examples of people who have lived a similar story, it would be so interesting to dive into why this happens (personally and societally)!!

Rebecca Blacka

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard please! 🙏❤️

Publiq Quaker Friend

"illegal" immigration (aka the idea people have of it and how its always been a civil crime...)

Elisha Summers

Omg the last two would have right up Michael's alley. I'm sure Sarah would do a great job with them too, but Mike would love live for parsing through that data.

Isabella Dickinson

JIMMY HOFFA AND THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT (aka it wasn’t just Jimmy Hoffa but rather the success of dedicated attacks on labor by conservatives to pass so-called “right-to-work” laws) ✊❤️

Kirsty Harrod

I’d love one on the falsities behind the ‘keep calm and carry on’ spirit of the Blitz! I recently found out that the UK government had to be lobbied to let people use Tube stations as bomb shelters…

bailey sperling

i just read about how second wave (white) feminists pushback against valium as “mothers little helper” ended up fueling the war on drugs/incarceration of POC…. sooo interesting would love a deep dive! (i read Happy Pills in America by David Herzberg)

Dallas Sherman

Can you sucker Mike into being a guest for further OJ episodes? Would feel weird to finish the journey without him.

Nicole Essink

I would love to hear a YWA that discusses Sandy Hook and the conspiracy theories around that tragedy.

Amanda

I've always been interested in hearing YWA talk about the Olsen twins and their careers and struggles with tabloids.

Marc Blinder

The history of Wiccans & Paganism! I found a book by the Sarah Marshall of the 1920s and it was totally awesome - Margaret Alice Murray

Geoffrey Runyon

I don't know if I'm wrong about it, but a weird pop culture moment is that painting some painted over that looks terrible and we all just laughed at it

Quararnmomming2021

Love so many of these ideas! -I love the rising cost of healthcare. To jump on that, what it takes to retire (spoiler we probably never will be able to) - addressing why "trauma" and talking about it makes people uncomfortable - Jon Benet - I hate myself for this one, but yeah Johnny Depp and Amber Heard - Generational wars, and why they seem to be a thing now. IE Boomers vs Millennials, Millennials vs Gen Z, Gen X vs.... ect. -This one is a bit of a reach.... Milton Hershey and the city of Hershey PA - Deep dive into the life of our current president (no defining politics involved just where he comes from and what he stands for) - Rising cost of living and how it is depleting middle class period -

Wyatt Hack

Gifted kids and child prodigies!

Ashley Gonzalez

I love your women of the 90s series! Some other suggestions listed below. Can't wait to see what you put out next :-) - The American Dream (maybe focus in part on the Industrial revolution in America and the idea of the "self made man" - The Mitford Sisters - The Crack Epidemic - Star Wars (Regan's Strategic Defense Initiative) - Birth Control (really there are so many topics within here) - Pat Tillman - The Montgomery Bus Protests - Gloucester high school pregnancy pact - An Urban Myth Series

William Rice

The Branch Davidians and David Koresh is right up your alley. Seems like a great multi part episode. Lots of mistakes by the government and by the media there. Maybe ruby ridge CIA flying drugs into the country I really want to know more about the Iran Contra affair Hands across America?

Ashley Gonzalez

Oh yeah Generation Wars would be great - especially because it is totally NOT a new concept! The WWI generation hated the flappers like the Boomers HATE the Millennials!

Quararnmomming2021

This would be an excellent series! I think so many people believe infidelity is black and white, and that forgiveness into said infidelity is too!!

Quararnmomming2021

YES PLEASE!!! The dream/predatory sale that is sold specifically to MOTHERS on MLMs (ie part time work for 3x full time money).

Sean McCormick

Maybe just corruption in LA in general. What about a Huey Long episode????

Jennifer Avignon

Food labeling! This is a big topic, but i would really love to dig into GMOs, and maybe also "natural" vs. "organic", or "free range" vs. "cage free", etc.

Laura Augustine

I'd love to hear more about OJ, if you are still interested in talking about the trial.

Cameron Kay

You've touched on it in other episodes, but I think an extended discussion of your article "The End of Evil" would be interesting. I'm a doctoral candidate who studies psychopathy (among other socially-aversive personality traits), and I thought you did an excellent job pointing out many of the issues surrounding the study of psychopathy.

Laura H.

Ecce homo! Which now brings in a ton of money to the church from tourism, so in effect is doing exactly what relics and artifacts have been doing for churches for centuries.

Laura H.

I think Stuff You Should Know once did an episode on gifted children, and I think you'd have a really interesting perspective on how we treat/have treated child prodigies.

A LG

I think at some point you were researching police mediums? Would love to hear more about that!

Madelin Kucharski

Amanda Knox / good guest. Also, Lena Dunham & Alicia Bennet have a podcast called the C word. It’s paywall, but available via apple subscription model. I think Sarah you would enjoy and perhaps reach out. They have covered so many women, many / most unaware but well done. The episode on Dare Wright is haunting and I knew nothing about this women, but it was so well done. Judy Garland also, covered. I’m not saying do it, I just thought you would also be interested in the theme - Again, the C Word podcast with Lena requires subscription to Luminary. Free trials of subscription may be available and could give you a few days to check out some of the episodes. Hope you are well. I enjoyed most recent episode. Thanks for being you.

Jill Marbach

I would love to hear the rest of the OJ Simpson saga!

Natalie Torres

I mentioned this on another comment but I’d love to hear an episode about the origins of the pledge of allegiance- it seems so strange to me that we would ask kids as young as five to swear their loyalty to our country. I don’t know if there’s a story there but I’m so curious.

Rose Yankoski

My first vote would be OJ if you’re still feeling up for it. I would also suggest neighborhood gentrification. I feel ishy about it, but I don’t know why or what can be done to make it less bad. I’m also a big Newsies lover and I used to work somewhere where there was the constant threat that I would have to be a scab. I think an episode on modern unions would be great.

Erin Heath

I second the Amanda Knox idea!

Lydia Pelot-Hobbs

DARE! It would be great to talk about the failures and promises of the program and how it fit into the war on crime.

OMG please bring Michael back as a guest host to talk more about the nonprofit industrial complex. I'm a teacher who used to work at a few different nonprofits including a food bank. The amount of things people are wrong about. Dear God. The one that drove me the most nuts was when food corporations would donate pallets of gum and mountain dew to kids programs and translating the weight into a "number of meals served" (which of course this kind of math helps the food bank in their quest for funding) 🙄

Macy Jordan

they consider "a meal" to be 1.2 lbs of anything. pepsico boppin' 2 pallets of mountain dew 24 packs to an eastern KY food pantry can be twisted into them "providing over 3,000 meals" that data manipulation is wild

Alissa Pyrich

I've been reading some about Mileva Marić, Albert Einstein's first wife, and how she may have played a more substantial role in some of the theories/discoveries attributed to Einstein was reported at the time. Are we all wrong about Einstein?

J.R. Weisser

I believe there already is a YWA episode about DARE!

Alissa Pyrich

Any chance we've all been wrong all these years about Nancy Reagan? I think she's pretty awful but maybe there's more to her than what we saw when she was First Lady.

I have a bit of a lighter suggestion-- corsets! Or historical fashion in general, both western and non. There are a ton of myths to bust there and a whole bunch of fashion historians who are active online and would make really engaging guests!

Belinda Cant

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schapelle_Corby Maligned women of the 2000s. The coverage of this has all the tropes. Bimbo. Class, Ott media interest and hype etc etc Great plot twists. I suspect everything that has ever been written about Schapelle was wrong.

Belinda Cant

God i just read the the titles of the articles an the first para of the book review of Tony Wilsons book. So many well known gross male journos using Schapelle as an excuse to peddle some very weird views of women.

Peg Conlon

As someone who lives near there, I’d love to hear a deep dive on the Gloucester pregnancy pact! Are Horribles Parades a local thing? Because those girls were brutally mocked in local parades.

Andrea

Amanda Knox, re-visiting Satanic Panic, crack epidemic and American government's role, and more episodes about midcentury america in line with the Stepford Wive's episode

Andrea

Yes! It bothers me so badly when people think natural automatically means healthy, or not understanding that 'it has chemicals' is one of the most meaningless phrases ever because everything is a chemical!!

Andrea

The Donner Party is wildly fascinating

Andrea

I can't imagine what survivors of assault/especially if religious have experienced if they were taught abstinence as an exclusive measure of purity and worth. How Elizabeth's trauma was compounded by a horrendous lesson that sexual contact degrades worth is heartbreaking. On that note, Purity Balls are something a lot of us are unaware of and it is archaic and dangerous to young girls.

Andrea

I absolutely second octomom

Andrea

They've done the Menendez brothers, actually! It's an older episode, but it's there IIRC

Andrea

It isn't fake, but the panic is disproportionate to how rare TSS is (and that it isn't caused by tampons!). To have it, you already have to have the Staph bacteria in your body, though there is an association with usage. It's essentially the ultimate example of correlation not equally causation.

Ma’any Ahmed

The pushback against sex work is a moral panic if I’ve ever heard one. You guys touched on the topic in the human trafficking episode, but I would love to see actual it covered with the same love and nuance. There’s so much we get sooo wrong about the industry. Aileen Wuornos could be an interesting story for sure.

Frankie Kane

The Rosenbergs 2002 Olympic figure skating fix Firestone scandal Milli vanilli

Gwen Christensen

A weird and maybe entirely too niche topic but... You're wrong about cave diving. Check out the channel DiveTalk on YouTube; I feel like my internet dads Gus and Woody would be THRILLED to talk about why cave diving is totally safe if you follow the rules and know your limits.

Halle

Reality tv or any of the maligned women of reality tv

Brooke Chappell

My dream crossover episode is you and Dana Schwartz talking about the early life of Elizabeth I, esp in regard to Thomas Seymour, because I really haven’t seen much discussion of that scandal in a way that doesn’t present her as complicit and “oh she knew what was up” way, in what seems to me to be a pretty classic sex abuse scenario; it’s just interesting to think of this person who’d become so powerful and transformative for her country, in part because of her gender and contested virginity, as a CSA survivor. “Much suspected of me/Nothing proved can be/Quoth Elizabeth, prisoner.”

Grant Fairbanks

It would be really interesting to see you dive into the history of the Log Cabin Republicans! The Attack Queers by Richard Goldstein is a really good book that might be a good starting off point. They're weirdly a powerhouse of queer politics, mobilizing nearly 1 million lgbt voters for Bush, while also never really gaining respect from Republicans, or from the wider LGBT movement. They have a long history going back to the 1960s with Harvey Milk and the Briggs initiative, all the way to present where they're pretty much full on white nationalists that immediately backed Trump in 2020. Very interesting and topical with the stuff in trans rights in Texas and the Don't Say Gay bill in Florida!

Brooke Chappell

Oh, also! I was on the ground of SF&F fandom during the RaceFail drama/discourse (https://fanlore.org/wiki/RaceFail_%2709) and it seems like that’s been largely forgotten, even in nerd circles. But it was a Big Deal for awhile there, and I think really laid some hostility and defensiveness groundwork for the Sad Puppies and Gamergate, which then led in twisty, complicated ways to alt-right tactics circa 2016.

Ann Beck

In Texas they also say a pledge to the state…not sure if that’s the case in other places but I have a feeling it’s not. 🙄 Also, my friends’ kids are at a faith-based private school and they say a pledge to the Bible! (Plus Texas and America, too, of course!) 😂

Mike Rose

The myths about Native Americans and alcoholism. I think it was taught to me (and many others) that indigenous folks have a wildly vulnerable genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Where in fact I just learned that it’s actually linked to poverty, cultural loss, and historical trauma. Hopefully this is something y’all decide to tackle! ❤️

You're Wrong About: Music Edition! - Britney Spears - Sam Cooke - Whitney Houston - Billie Holiday - Amy Winehouse - Nina Simone

Connor Bragg

Would love to see some continuation of the “true crime” stuff. Amanda Knox, JonBenet Ramsey, more OJ, Menendez Brothers, or Leopard and Loeb would be my top suggestions!

Connor Bragg

Been hoping for an episode on this that goes into the history of ASL, dear culture and oralism since the Koko the Gorilla episode!

Etch McSmuttington

Hey, Mike and Aubrey talk about this on Maintenance Phase in a couple of episodes. One on Patreon and one in their main feed. 😊

ArcaneVoid

I always thought the use of nuclear weapons on Japan during WW2 would make a good episode. In particular, there's a wide-spread belief among Americans that doing so actually saved lives as it made Japan surrender sooner. This looks like self-serving propaganda on the surface - "oh yeah, actually by nuking two major population centers we saved lives." But there are independent historical reasons to think it might not be true. Might be too into the historical weeds for YWA, but it's a cultural misconception worth debunking imo.

Etch McSmuttington

I really love your maligned women of the 90s episodes, I feel like it’s an incredible strength of yours to pour passion and empathy into those stories. I would be very excited to hear an episode where you talk with a sex worker (or even multiple sex workers) about various aspects and assumptions that people have about the sex industry, especially in America. As a listener from Australia I find America’s views on sex work really interestingly backward (not that we have such a great attitude toward it here). I love this show so much and I am so glad you have continued making it. It’s always a highlight of my regular listening.

Luke Byrnes

Sinead O’Connor !! Maybe her biography for summer book club

Tracy Bethel

My significant other is a teacher and the #1 "You're Wrong About" he rants about is the theory of Learning Styles. The idea that we all have a best way to learn (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) has been debunked by researchers again and again. Yet, it continues to be a bedrock of modern teacher training, education practice in U.S. schools, and adult workplace learning strategies. Teacher's are stuck trying to figure out how to teach algebra to kinesthetic learners and folks actually try to do things like learn a foreign language by "visual learning" only. Here's an article summarizing the research findings: https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/learning-styles-debunked-there-is-no-evidence-supporting-auditory-and-visual-learning-psychologists-say.html https://www.educationnext.org/stubborn-myth-learning-styles-state-teacher-license-prep-materials-debunked-theory/

Leah Roukema

I'd love to hear about: - Early Psychology / Psychiatry. - Psychopaths / Sociopaths. I've picked up the take that they're dubious labels and some basic reasoning but I'd love to hear the history of how they came to be and where they go wrong.

Lauren Avirom Kim

Agreed! I loved the coverage of his "dream team," and we haven't gotten to Johnny Cochran yet.

Janice O

It would be cool to hear some mental health debunking. Not sure what media stories this could be centered around, but a You're Wrong About... Bipolar disorder or ADHD could address some pop culture depictions. Billy from 6 Feet Under comes to mind.

Ashley Day

Thought of this after Maintenance Phase reviewed Supersize Me-the documentary Waiting for Superman/charter schools/standardized testing

Katie Crowley

Recycling. Learning the truth about this one hurt

Tom Peryam

I always felt like there must be a bizarre story behind Biosphere 2, the utopian ecological research post/Mars colony prototype that 90's kids were told was *super* important.

MK Phantom

More true crime, OJ and general 90s topics, maligned women in general, Jenny McCarthy would be great as mentioned above too! Also topics related to psychotherapy - as a therapist most people are “wrong” about what it is and how therapists are supposed to conduct themselves. Also room for a ton of Grifty content in therapy space.

NotThatOne

Multi-level marketing!

Alexandria Stanton

Jane Fonda - is she a maligned woman of history? Also her context in cancel culture?

PEEWEE HERMAN AND THE PORN THEATRE DEBACLE!

I came here to say an episode on ADHD/Autism would be amazing!!! Been wanting it for a while!

Lari

When are we getting the rest of the OJ story!!!

I am not a mom and I remember this! It terrified me

Nicole

Canada. As nightmare-ish as the US, but we're all passive-aggressive about it, so it's much harder to decipher.

naomi_enchanted

GamerGate. I feel like the topic could benefit from some more complexity than I've seen it presented with & your empathetic perspective

Imelda Marcos! I thought of her when you and Chelsey Weber-Smith were chatting about feeling weird about women associated with bad and arguably powerful men, and I have to believe that there is more to her than her shoe collection???

Ashley Sargent

Me too movement and more maligned women!

Sonja Frolek

Anything cult related! Scientology FLDS (fundamentalist church of Jesus chris of Latter Day Saints) Children of God

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch! It’s absolutely true that we’re putting massive amounts of plastic in the oceans and that’s really bad, but I see a lot of misinfo about what the major sources of plastic are, what problems they actually cause, what we can do about it, etc. My guest recommendations are Miriam Goldstein, who did her PhD on the ecology of ocean plastics and now works with NGOs, or Rebecca Helm, a marine biologist and professor who’s written for The Atlantic on the topic.

Victoria Celeste Cota

Hello, I heard plenty of ppl say the trojan horse scandal/affair and I thought to myself "but there's already a podcast about it!" but it seems like there is yet another side to the story, so I wanna second all those people who are interested in ur take!!

FangirlJeanne

The truth about Sarah Winchester, the myths and misinformation behind the Winchester mystery house.

Betsy the Gremlin

I’d love to know more of Sarah’s thoughts about psychopaths and how they’re not a real thing. They’re the modern day boogey man and it’s wild!

Evan

The Cuban missile crisis and how jfk is often praised for it, but that’s really mostly because nuclear war didn’t happen, as he made questionable decisions

mj_maven

I suggest checking out Hallie Rubenhold's Bad Women: The Ripper Retold. She looks at Jack the Ripper's victims who have been branded as prostitutes for over a century. I listened and could her Sarah and Michael's gasps and comments.

Julia

DUIs!

Ginger Baumgartner

Would love to see you do an episode about animal myths with Katie from creature feature! I’ve been loving the episodes with Jamie Loftus. Also more myths about psychology/disorders like about psychopaths! I also think it would be really fun to have an episode like you’re wrong about your bra size and then talk about the history and current nonsense of women’s clothing sizes!

Luke Bowers

i would love love an episode about gender, kate bornstein has a book called gender outlaw which would make for perhaps a great bookclub or an overall episode about gender, with other great trans books!

Mike Baehr

Not sure if this is a "You're Wrong About," but I would love to hear you talk to John Darnielle about his new book "Devil House" because it is VERY MUCH in your wheelhouse.

Katelyn

Pierre Elliott Trudeau French Immersion

Maddison Collits

Please please more OJ! I’ve listened to the series 10 times or more and am fascinated and want to hear all of Sarah’s deep dives on more! ❤️❤️❤️

Madelin Kucharski

How about an episode about me - lol - or gen x, boring person, non existence, hermit, shut in, small life, - joking, but I am curious as to why no one as replied with - overt episode of do me, and hide behind / more stuff I like…I’m only joking- I find it nice to know - I think we love ❤️ you Sarah and we want to support you. Oh and Mike is gone, and I don’t think it’s helpful to say, bring back Mike. That seems insensitive. I think you are doing well. I feel bad - as non organized person, so many suggestions, wow, good luck girl. I enjoyed your guest appearance on the Podcast, these’s are their stories (law and order / crime writers on podcast). I like that podcast - Good luck and lots of love Again, lonely Doll, Dare Wright or Judy Garland, I still think - examples of women - similar to 90s - I like sad stuff

BjornNYC

Came here to make the same comment. PLEASE keep going with OJ! Pretty, pretty please!

Danae

Sarah- you mentioned her on You Are Good the other day in passing. You’re Wrong About on Kim Kardashian but exploring the question of: why do we love Kim? I often think Kim is our Lady Di (I know, I know) but hear me out. Would we not all cry in the streets with teddy bears if she passed?

katherine curtis

Princess Grace? Love to hear about her kids as well - seems like there is a lot to tell

Frank Wick

I'd love to hear something from you all about child actors and the brutal meat machine of Hollywood.

AU

More about the Pinkertons and their involvement with union wars would be incredible!

Laura Miller

Maybe the Brock Turner case and the campaign to remove Judge Persky. Many of us felt as though Brock Turner got away too lightly with such a short prison sentence, but should we be that quick to jail 19 year olds with no prior criminal history? What we might have been "wrong about" was thinking that Persky gave such a light sentence to Truner because he was a young man with a promising future, when really it's because he's a judge who isn't inclined to instantly hand out lengthy sentences. This article is what prompted me to rethink the whole thing: https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/brock-turner-michele-dauber/

Tyler Caple

I would still love a Buffy episode 🥺 or just Joss Whedons cultural impact as a fake feminist who we all just assumed knew what he was talking about

Girl W/Wolf

Not to bring up another true crime topic, but I think we need an updated conversation about Aileen wuornos

AdinaY

How about The Old Testament? I thought of this b/c I'm listening to the Westboro Baptist Church episode, and if someone thinks God is generally terrible or doesn't exist, that's none of my business. But I think a lot of people don't know that Jews and many liberal Christians consider it anti-Semitic to harp on how bad the Old Testament and its God are while saying (or implying) that the New Testament is better. You can Google "supersessionism" if you want. And even if you don't do the show, could you and your guests stop saying this stuff? Sacrifices and related texts are about a third of the Five Books of Moses. So we don't love to hear them called Satanic-adjacent or whatever. Signed, a loyal but currently kind of disappointed Jewish listener

lauren

Plzzzzz talk about Pamela Anderson

King Mike

Mike is missed but I like how the show is evolving. For me, Sarah is the heart of You're Wrong About. She made me feel sorry for Jeffery Dahmer! (and many, other examples). Good luck to Michael Hobbes - I really enjoy his reporting. Sarah - do shows on whatever you are interested in. You have a beautiful heart.

Henry W Ballard

Or like a double feature on original Woodstock and then Woodstock 1999!

Miss Miscellaneous

Comfort animals, the "say no to drugs" campaign, MTV "rock the vote," Hugh Hefner as an impetus of the sexual revolution, and The real story behind "A League of their Own."

Lady Plinth

Furbekah

Lots of great suggestions already... But I'd love to hear an episode about tabloid media in the early 00s. Particularly around the narrative surround the Four Horse(wo)men of Messiness at the time: Paris, Lindsey, Nicole & Britney. (Jessica Simpson excluded since her autobiography was already covered.)

programalice

I’d love to hear the truth about obsessive fandoms, it was kind of a joke on twitter but particularly with Glee I remember twitter was just starting and how influential it was to the show and how entitled everyone seemed to become. Just seems to have grown beyond that now and days.

Stacy Woehlke

I know there has been reporting on it before (I think Slate and Vox have both done articles) but a YWA centering on why the Red Cross isn't the best disaster or relief org to send money to in times of crisis. I mention this because I still regularly see news orgs including the Red Cross in lists of non-profits to donate to (including very recently b/c of the crisis in Ukraine). And what's so bad is that they've had successful campaigns around their texting to give $10 since it's so easy. The Red Cross has its place (blood/platelet donations for one) but as a first line response to disasters or crises, it is not.

Raphaela Haessler

Jessica Lynch and the sturrounding media frenzies

Raphaela Haessler

The story of biologist David Starr Jordan might be up your alley. It was recently explored in Lulu Miller's book "Why Fish Don't Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life"

Sarah Helsley

Eva Perón would be a very cool episode or series of episodes imo!

boysnberriespie

I’m not sure if there’s much of a “you’re wrong about” aspect to Scientology, but I would be genuinely interested in hearing about it, particularly because I’ve always wondered why so many celebrities have been and are still Scientologists (Also though maybe not, it feels like they get very scary about people talking about them) CIA and LSD maybe? Everywhere I turn there’s people talking about it but it’s all contradictory info and a lot of what sounds like conjecture but idk

Sarah Greene

Sarah has mentioned a few times In various episodes that she finds the concept of psychopaths to be sketchy, and questioned the validity of the Hare Psychopathy test. I would love (LOVE!) to hear a deep dive on that.

It's contemporary, but the media response to Havana Syndrome has been really interesting, regardless of whatever is true (my guess is just psychological distress impacting people with connections).

Country music From what I do know, it’s story is right up their alley, with plenty of racism, moral panic, and capitalism being the villain all along.

The race to the South Pole. 100%. Specifically the "heroism" of Scott. I hate it. I hate it so much. The man took P O N I E S. To Antarctica. Ponies, famous for eating very little and being great on ice, NOT. He took Burberry jackets. They're great for the London fog but do NOT work in icy conditions. He refused to use dogs ("a gentleman carries his own sled"). He made his team go all the way to the South Pole even when it was clear they were running out of rations and stamina and would probably die on the way back (which indeed they all did). Instead of doing the actual good leadership thing of turning them around before reaching the pole and saving their lives. Meanwhile Amundsen lived in Inuit communities, studied and respected their tools and knowledge, while British imperialist Scott simply even refused to entertain that ANYTHING could be learnt from people who had lived and thrived in icy conditions for millenia. Amundsen used dogs and sleds for transport and animal skins for clothing, all based on what he learnt from Inuit people. Also skis, duh. Something Scott was somehow too noble to do. Amundsen and his crew made it to the south pole and back. His entire crew survived. They even GAINED WEIGHT on the way back. Amazing. And yet in the British world Scott is still heralded for his heroism and Amundsen considered something of a non-gentlemanly cheat. SMDH. I am very passionate about this.

I just heard that the Supreme Court is giving the Boston marathon bomber a death sentence after all and spent some time wandering around wikipedia on the matter. Seems like there's a lot to unpack there.

People have already said it but I want to be involved (and annoying!) so more OJ please

Michelle Corey

I second this 💯 it's truly an astonishingly messed up story

Kris Kirby

I think a really interesting episode could be made about Angela Davis. Many people just have a shadowy feeling about her as someone who was somehow a criminal - because that's how the media portrayed her, even though she absolutely is not - she is a professor, activist and intellectual (she worked at my alma mater) who has done many wonderful things and has a lot to say.

jessica miller

I really love your maligned women from history episodes. 💜

Beth Harrison

Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska have absolutely radicalized me on this. I had no idea I had the capacity to be radicalized on this.

Sam

You mentioned Debbie Thomas and the Olympics once, an episode on Katarina Witt and Debbi Thomas and the 1988 Olympics would be super interesting.

I really, really want a “You’re Wrong About Malcolm Gladwell.” I’m consistently stunned by the shoddiness of his research and his gargantuan conclusions based on scant evidence.

the moral panic over subliminal messaging!!

Connor Bragg

Possibly something folks are already realizing they were wrong about, but I would love to see an episode or two about the Equal Rights Amendment and the disunity in the 1970s feminist movement.

Anne

Mother Theresa. The swindled podcast did an excellent break down of the myth of mother Teresa and I’d be fascinated to see Sarah Marshall and a guest unpack the person, the myth and the celebrity

Caitlin Scarlett

please please please talk about the moral panic surrounding school curriculum (banned books, sex ed, critical race theory).

I just listened to an old episode where Mike mentioned a possible Mason Murders episode, now it's all I want!

- Pam Anderson, in total, not just the tape. Maligned women from the 80s, 90s, and 00s is really just the best. - The rise of crack (Reagan, Oliver north, Iran contra, just say no, Gary Webb...so much) great addition/tie in to crack babies and dare. - more episode like the Lorena Bobbitt episode. - Immigration via the southern border (history of, WWII, Chicano movement, current events) - Jon Bennet - Lisa "left eye" Lopez - Milli Vanilli - one hit wonders from the 90s

It would be interesting to hear about our cultural view of ghosts/people who interact with ghosts - from the rise of spiritualism led largely by young women, to today's super bro-y paranormal investigators Or looking into our evolution of understanding mental health care. Side tangents (or focal points) could include the DSM, different therapies (e.g. electroshock), the theory that adhd was created by pharmaceutical companies so they could sell pills, etc.

Sasha R Meretzky

Child Protective Services. Oregon notoriously has one of the most corrupt CPS systems in the country, and it doesn't function to help families in any state in most cases. Fun fact: CPS has an UNLIMITED legal budget, as I learned from an attorney who's represented CPS cases for 22 years (!) Their business is dragging families through court, outcomes are heartbreaking.

I’m not sure if you’re wanting to continue the series in this new stage of the podcast, but I figured I’d put it out there that would be interested in listening on continuation of the OJ series.

Karen Cheung

maybe this is too recent but i'd love to find out what on earth happened with glenn greenwald

Despite reading scathing things about him in the media, I still follow Shaun King on social media & he seems to be doing a lot of good? I always wonder how much of the info we got about him was real vs. lies spread to discredit him as a strong voice in the BLM movement. There could also be something in this about white people who pretend to be black (Rachel Dolezal) and the affects it has on the black community as Shaun King was accused years ago of faking his Blackness by conservatives.

Peta

I completely agree! I went through life thinking that the CPS systems were staffed and run by people like Maxine Gray from Judging Amy.... Until my sister and her wife made the decision to become foster parents three years ago. The system is set up in a way that gives the caseworkers complete power & control over every aspect of how the situation plays out, down to and including the information that is passed along to those who have the power to hold them accountable. It is absolutely horrifying.

Sasha R Meretzky

Oh my gosh I could never be a FP or adopt knowing what I know now (private adoption only if I know the parents are truly consenting to surrendering the child). I haven't seen Judging Amy but had similar idealism about the agency prior to working with them. You are correct, the way they operate is exactly the same pattern as an abusive relationship. It's insane.

I can't imagine you're going to read this far down the list, but I do think there are a lot of interesting 'you're wrong abouts' in the world of mental health diagnosis. Such as the poor inter rater reliability in mental health diagnosis, how the diagnosis can be gendered or based on race or SES, and the benefits and pitfalls of people engaging in self diagnosis. There are also the myriad mental health terms that enter the common lexicon where the meaning shifts and changes, such as narcissism, codependency and sociopath.

zachery crenshaw

I remember hearing his name becoming a punchline and I’ve never heard the story.

Connor Bragg

Would love to see an episode on Valerie Solanas, SCUM, and the shooting of Andy Warhol.

Lindy Johnson

I would love to see an episode on the No Child Left Behind act and what it has done to schools, teachers, and students.

Shealyn Hall

I’ve always wanted to hear one on the Manson family and the sort of “myth” that the Helter Skelter story has become. I read that book my senior year of high school and was so engrossed with it, and then come to find that it’s probably not the truth, surprise surprise

Alisse Guerra

I really love the book clubs. This week on You are Good you mentioned 50 Shades of Grey in passing. I’d LOVE a recap of the series through your eyes. It’s place in our cultural understanding of relationships, sex, patriarchy, it’s sillyness!!!! It’s origins in FANFIC!!!!! The moral panic about it. The way it gets BDSM wrong and gave us bad understanding of it. etc etc etc, I’d love hear your thoughts on it. Thanks Sarah!!

Okay bear with me... Lindsay Lohan. She was a woman of the 90's and an extremely talented young actor who was completely cancelled for addiction problems.

Finish the OJ series. It was wonderful, but I believe that we are only on the arraignment

Jade Milaney

This but it’s a book club / semi debunking of Christopher Hitchens “the missionary position”

Nico Peruzzi

I was just relistening to the Koko The Gorilla episode and you briefly mentioned Helen Keller. Would love a full length episode on that. Feels like there’s probably a lot about her that’s not widely known

Audrey Hooker

Rebecca Black and Friday? Sarah Z has a video that goes into a bunch of this, so not sure how much there is to add, but fits into the theme of maligned young women blamed for things out of their control

Kate M

Seconded! I've been really interested with what Sarah has said about this but the thoughts are spread over a few different episodes.

alli moulton

With Mike coming back as a guest co-host please! (For OJ series)

Carly Gove

this is such a good idea!

Carly Gove

there’s an incredible writer/thinker on IG and tiktok who talks about the kardashians, you can find her as “kardashian kolloquium”. i think her real name is mj corey. sarah if you brought her on i think it would be an amazing ep!!!!!!!

Carly Gove

corsets is such a good suggestion!!!!

Carly Gove

you have to admit it was very funny lmfao

Jen Leedom

If we could have the rest of the story of the OJ Simpson trial, that would be great! I never thought I would listen to those episodes because I’ve been OJed out most of my life, but ofc you got me hooked!

Melinda Borie

I'm desperate to know what the real deal was with that Runaway Bride lady in like... 2003? I've done no research but I very much feel like we were wrong about that one.

Kelly Sawyer

William Shakespeare. Possibly in a joint effort with Noble Blood's Dana Schwartz?

Charlotte

In light of the new doc and YWA's love of the Bimbo, what about a Pam Anderson ep? Marilyn Monroe would be great, Lou Perlman and the boy bands of the 90s, the '27 club', McCarthy-ism, Sinead O'Connor, John Candy, so many! Really could do with a glass of JUICE though x

Savannah

Do scurvy! This is from the Wikipedia entry (not the most academic source but whatever….) - “ The knowledge that consuming foods containing vitamin C is a cure for scurvy has been repeatedly forgotten and rediscovered into the early 20th century.” Whaaaaaaaaat? We just forgot?!

Stephen Corston

Would love an episode of the Rajneeshees and of the Friedmans

Cory R

Wallace Simpson! Dana knows :)

Barry Fetics

Christian Science. Every city/town it seems had a prominent CS building from the 1800s; is it still a thing?

Jessie Hoy

This is a random one, but the chimpanzee that ate someone’s face off has always been an accepted story, but I think it was a case of animal abuse. Your Koko episode always gets me in my heart.

This is really late and there's so many comments already but I want to say one I'd really like anyway: Michael Jackson

Kenyatta Matthews

Tawana Brawley. Curious to know what exactly happened there and where all the folks involved in that case are now—well, except Al Sharpton!

Caroline Nickerson

Recycling! I’m a PhD student working on environmental science, and it breaks my heart that people think recycling is the #1 thing they can do for the environment

Penny Clark

Please finish OJ 😱🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Cate Kneale

I was just reminded of Anna Chapman, Russian spy and I think that would be an interesting topic for you. Love your episodes with Chelsey and with Jamie.

Cate Kneale

I'd also really like more UK episodes and suggest the 1980s miners strike for a story about how the unions had their power taken away and how it's now thought of as an environmental decision, and the Yorkshire ripper for a how the police got it really wrong story.

Cate Kneale

This should also involve Dr Eleanor Janega!

Cate Kneale

Both fires are about how we also only get regulation through disaster and multiple deaths.

Onlyfans? I’m not even sure where to begin with what people get wrong about it, but would love if you had a sex worker on to talk about it. The way people think it’s easy money (it’s not), the absolute scam-level business shenanigans behind the scenes of it, the way sex workers built it but they try to act like it’s not a porn site, so many interesting threads to pull 😊

Alexis

Finish OJ Simpson trial!!! 😭❤️

BC

Kissing Jessica Stein and this is for You Are Good ha

Sarah Greene

There are some maligned/lampooned men that I would be curious to hear a deep dive on: - Brendan Fraser - Tom Green - Jesse Jackson - Howard Dean and “The Scream” - Gary Coleman - Milli Vanilli

Barry Fetics

American POWs allegedly left in Vietnam. In the eighties it was all over, in movies and in the black POW/MIA flags. Any evidence ?

Leah

I’d love something about movie sets- either a deep dive into the making of something specific that was a crazy set, or more generally the issues of safety/labor rights (or lack thereof!) that have been so present lately with the death of Halyna Hutchins and the IATSE strike— our favorite movies are made in some absolutely appalling conditions! Also, totally unrelated: the controversial techniques of famous dog trainers like Cesar Millan.

Leah

I love the bra size idea! You’re Wrong About women’s underwear, full stop. (I used to be a historical reenactor, and oh boy)

Leah

A couple more: the photographer/monkey selfie controversy and ensuing lawsuit by PETA. Anything about PETA really, because there’s…a lot there. Also: Nancy Regan’s astrologer or Nancy running things while Ronny succumbed to Alzheimer’s. The Hulk Hogan /Gawker trial and Peter Thiel.

Lexi House

TRAVIS! I second this, even if not a whole episode it’s a really crazy story

Lexi House

I would give ANYTHING to hear your takes about Helen Keller! also, the CIA’s involvement in global and domestic drug trafficking, especially crack and the Gary Webb story (a journalist exposes the cia, is absolutely demolished by all mainstream media, ends up being right, and dies from two gunshots to the head in a SUICIDE??? very on brand i think)

Jessie Hoy

There’s a really good crime junkie episode that covered this, if you haven’t already listened to it. I liked that they titled it “Meredith Kercher” since she was the victim, and they did an interview with Amanda Knox too, but I can’t remember if that was just on their Patreon or not.

Jessie Hoy

Would LOOOOVE an episode on The Black Panthers!

Jessie Hoy

YES! Because of last episodes, I’ve really been thinking more about how people get labeled as psychopaths now, and true crime podcasts are pretty dismissive of anyone’s words/feelings after they’ve decided they’re a psychopath. Would love for Sarah to give us her perspective.

Leah

Oh I replied to someone else who suggested bra size with wanting to see a history of women’s underwear! I spent years doing historical reenacting, and I loved my corset. I wouldn’t want to *have to * wear it, but I loved how supportive it was for my back.

Katie Larson

Oriana Camporese

I’m an episode and a half into Pam and Tommy, would love to know more about what actually happened

Mollie K.

This is extremely broad, but Detroit and its history/hardships. I live there and love it, but so many people look down on it and have uninformed things to say about it.

Nicole Zeckner

One thing that seems to be popping up in my feed more and more lately is carbon offsets, and if they really work. I'd always thought they didn't, but as with most things, it seems like it's more complicated than that. Another good one could be Gary, Indiana. It's 42 minutes from Chicago, and in theory should be a satellite city. The changing steel industry is blamed for its current condition, but racism and white flight had a huge part in the decline as well.

Ella Tootell

Hear me out- America’s Next Top Model. If you go back, especially the first few seasons, it’s an incredible little view of race dynamics and self reinforced sexism. It’s wild.

Allee

I’d love to hear Sarah speak on prison. The for profits in particular. I think most people don’t really understand the details of our disastrous prison systems. Also Ayn Rand. And why this doesn’t work and all the issues around her theories of a society.

Jennifer Boeder

This may have been done long ago, but my god I’d love to hear Sarah break down “The Stranger Beside Me.” YWA really pointed out to me that the myth of the brilliant serial killer just tends to excuse the incompetence of the police, and reading Ann Rule’s book for the first time it’s shocking how she centers the cops’ stress over that of families of murdered women, how she constantly excuses the many years that pass during Bundy’s crime sprees without ever mentioning or even questioning why LE was so incapable of stopping him. I haven’t gotten to his escape from jail yet but I can only imagine how she’ll excuse that. I had no idea Ann Rule was a cop, and how copaganda permeates so much of the true crime genre she basically kickstarted.

Marion Sanni

I would love to hear Sarah’s perspective on domestic violence

Genavee Brown

Stanley Milgram and his experiments on obedience to authority or zimbardo (annoys me that he’s made a career off one poorly run study)

Laz

The Earn IT Act (2022) is based on propaganda of sex workers and child sexual abuse material. It's the sequel to SESTA/FOSTA in forcing tech companies to increase censorship and weaken security of messages. They will be removing end to end encryption by allowing a backdoor for government bodies like law enforcement to have access to anyones online information. This is a huge violation of privacy and will increase automated censoring on sites with usual outcomes being removed LGBT content, sex education, and de-platforming sex workers. Anyone who reads please contact your rep now: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s3538

Nicole Zeckner

I just moved to the Detroit metro area from out of state, and people had a lot of opinions on my move. I'm working on learning about the cities history and present so I can be ready to educate people when it happens.

Sarah Boehlke

CRT. .all and everything please. How it's become a political target and how it has morphed into another moral panic. I could always use more facts to argue with my parents about. Love the show always! Sarah B.

Jo

A mini series about the AIDS epidemic with Michael as a guest would be my dream (although I totally understand if he wouldn't want to do that seems like a lot of work)

Hayley

Would you ever return to OJ? I miss Paula! Love the show, take care!

DJ Tozer

Would like to have show about how public domain becoming more restrictive under Sonny Bono act, has hurt creative process, but maybe that's been explored enough through others. Also, in the 1970s: The books "Go Ask Alice" by anonymous and "The Minnesota Connection" [when I was growing up in the 1970s, my Mom had me really scared about the human trafficking scene described in the "Minnesota Connection" book.]

Squid

Casey Anthony

Shakespeare. Lotta misinformation out there.

Renee

For book club, "Lisa Bright and Dark" also, in the series Six Feet Under, the character, Brenda, has a psychiatrist mom who wrote a book about her as a child called "Charlotte Light and Dark"

Mustelina

No, it’s a generation thing. Anyone over the age of like, 40? from MA should be able to give you the details. There’s been at least one movie.

sam forney

kinda like your anna nicole smith or tonya harding episodes of 90s maligned women, i’d love an episode about the pam & tommy sex tape. just watched the series on hulu…i had no idea it was stolen! not that i knew much about it since i was a kid, ha.

Zahra Ali

I would like to hear the continuation of the O.J. Simpson case. I was really enthralled by that deep dive😊

Sarah Carles

As an appendium to the OJ Simpson series, I'd love to listen to an episode about the Kim K/Kanye debacle, and how we continue to excuse men's behaviour as pranks, even when it's scary

Sarah Carles

Also as a bonus episode I want someone to explain Chelsea Hart to Sarah

Tim Stuff

Finish OJ. Aileen Wuornos. Love Canal. Joan Crawford/Mommie Dearest. Waco. Sally Hemmings.

Mollie K.

Yes, same here! Moved here from the east coast. I can definitely recommend The Origins of the Urban Crisis by Thomas Sugrue. Everyone I know who knows anything about Detroit has said this is essential reading. I have no idea if this is weird but if you want to chat more, my Twitter handle is @molliekrawitz 😊

Madison Lane

leo frank trial !!! full episode talking about fanfiction

Patrick Santucci

A long episode, possibly a series, analyzing the "gifted child" phenomena and associated industries. You've mentioned your own gifted schooling in the past and despite mine occurring decades earlier we could have been telling the same story, with the same disillusioned ending.

Grace Jamieson

I second Casey Anthony- it was mentioned once during your Nancy Grace episodes and I’ve been dying to hear an episode about it! I feel like the Casey Anthony trial was like the millennial OJ. Tiny substory but- after the trial, two of my sisters friends started a rumor that she was hiding out in our super small hometown in Ohio (population <6,000). They emailed a ton of media companies and all of a sudden news crews were set up along all of our stoplight intersections (which is 3 to be exact 😂).

Andrea Shinn

Please finish the OJ Simpson series!!!!!!

Harvey

hi Sarah! 💖 i'm dying to hear you go off about The Satanic Temple! i felt like the netflix documentary really tried to sanitize their image and obscure some pretty ugly things that are slowly making their way around-- there are SLAPP suits and this huge alt-right connections history rabbithole! you've got to check out @QueerSatanic on twitter! so many different directions this stuff shoots off in! there are a few other things on my wishlist, i'd love to see you try to tackle the whole "tankies" argument: are they real? is it really just 'red scare 2.0' ? what is their deal? how about something on police unions? the history, or about the way they seem to be the most powerful unions around? is there any meat to a conversation about the rhetoric surrounding "small business" and how this gets tossed around in arenas like municipal politics? thank you so much for podcasting! your show has given me so much!

Angela Tuell

I love all these suggestions. Joan Crawford/Mommie Dearest is probably the one I would be most excited about that I haven’t heard covered by other podcasts.

Zuzanna Działowska

Sarah probably opposed to watching Pam & Tommy, because it's too hyped 😅

Zuzanna Działowska

What about refugee crisis? I think it would great to unpack the discourse on that, especially in light of the war in Ukraine. Other idea (extremely broad, not sure how to approach but that's your job, I guess) - American concept of freedom. I'm European, if you can't tell. 😅

Madeline Perkins

No I did not think of an idea yes I did go though all the comments and like the OJ ones

Sarah

Anthrax!!!!

Mazzy OS

I know y’all touched on this in a bonus episode but Carole Baskin deep dive please

Mazzy OS

seconding Aileen Wournos

Hallie Steiner

Britney Spears, Oprah Winfrey, Ke$Ha, Twilight, Kim Kardashian, Jussie Smollet, more of the OJ series!

Hallie Steiner

These are just things/people I’d like to hear more about, whose public images have changed over time, which I would love to hear Sarah talk about!

Raphaela Haessler

The story behind the ubiquitous Shen Yun billboards - Falun Gong, alleged organ harvesting, Chinese dance controversies, the conservative media tie in - it seems there's a lot to dig into there.

Sharon Huff

the salem witch trials, as well as the withcraft hysterias in general. Let me know if you need any part time research help.

Sharon Huff

Also Adnan Syad. I think Serial kind of missed the boat, even though I enjoyed it.

Sharon Huff

Also-how come we have urban myths?

Sharon Huff

And I second the "Who wrote Shakespeare?" idea-so much crap out there onthis one. Again, happy to help with research.

Sharon Huff

Yes-Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy- a great book about the Hemings story

Sharon Huff

Elizabeth I and her sex life (or not) is a great topic in general

Sharon Huff

Especially the Rosenbergs

Sharon Huff

As someone who's often been part of the gentrification of neighborhoods, I'd love to hear a wrong about about it. It seems like whenever it's discussed, everybody takes a stand and nobody takes responsibility for their own behavior.

Fred Maxon

Randy Shilts, Patient O, and the AIDS crisis

Lauren A King

I love all the suggestions here, and just want to add: Sarah I miss hearing you tell stories on the podcast! I also understand that there are periods of having different capacity for this work, but want to say that I miss having you teach me things. <3

Abby L

Real housewives!

Jamie

For a long time I've been thinking it would be neat if you took a look at the theory that the serial killers of the '70s and '80s had some sort of inherited traumas from their own fathers' war experiences. I randomly heard this mentioned in passing on another podcast (possibly SYSK). Today I was listening to the True Crime episode and you asked where all the serial killers have gone. Maybe there is something to this theory? Of course I'm sure it goes a lot deeper than that but I would love to hear your take. All the best!

Emily Stieren

Sally Hemings is a good suggestion. Also, Patsy Ramsey.

Ellen

maybe for a bonus episode but the west memphis 3? 3 teenagers who were convicted of killing children as a part of a satanic ritual, the evidence was really dubious and eventually released after many years in prison

Elizabeth Fulton

Thank you! I listened and it was super interesting. Definitely what I was looking for.

Camille Tinnin

The student movements of the 1960s/70s and specifically the Kent State Shooting and Jackson State shooting. I feel like most people agree, today, that those were bad (if they’ve heard about them). But— public opinion at the time was more mixed. Plus- Jackson State (an HBCU) isn’t talked about anywhere near enough- even though the killing of 2 students there happened only 10 days after Kent State.

Olivia Watkin-McClurg

Really hope you're still checking these. I'm listening to an audiobook about Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Duchess of Hohenberg, and Sophie seems like exactly the kind of history lady you (and maybe Dana) would like to learn about and I'd love to hear you talk about her.

Phil Stricker

I'd like to know whatever the hell Julian Assange's whole thing is.

Madeline

Pablo Escobar cocaine hippos

Makiah

I am late and I know this seems random but I would love a deep dive on Maury and Jerry Springer -adjacent shows, what is the validity on the DNA and lie detector tests they provide? Why are they so entertaining and so unethical at the same time?

Nicole Klostermann

Recently heard the story of Joyce / Bernann McKinney, a former Miss Wyoming who received tabloid attention in the 70s for kidnapping a Mormon man, then later made headlines in the oughts for cloning her dog, Booger. There’s an Errol Morris documentary about her which I haven’t seen. But the story seems up your alley, Sarah.

Hannah Drake

Super late to the game, but I just watched The Jinx on HBO — so curious about your takes on the series (especially ethics of how it was edited) & how it affected Robert Durst’s trial!

Molly Hale

I'd love a full episode on multilevel marketing! I know it's been mentioned a few times in previous episodes but there is actually a very compelling origin story to the whole thing that feels very YWA-worthy. Robert Fitzpatrick's Ponzinomics is a fabulous resource.

Elizabeth Gorman

The death industry! Not totally a YWA, but after reading Caitlyn Doughty’s books, I realized how much I didn’t know about death, and our rights (as the deceased and as family). It feels super predatory!

Danielle

Hi Sarah! Thank you for keeping the show going! Your latest episode with Laci Mosley was one of my YWA favorites to date. Can you PLEASE do more episodes with Laci?!

Isabelle Sayers

I would love if there were more episodes on the OJ Simpson trial! That series was one of my favs, but loving the new setup - the guests are super interesting 🤩

Lauren Traci

Yes it was so good! I loved their chemistry and Laci is hilarious, love Scam Goddess and Sarah was a guest on there as well in January.

Schmessica

Taylor Swift (10 minute version) (You're Wrong About Version) feat. Dana Schwartz

MaxE.

I would love an episode on the concept of the “morning pages” which I recently learned came from Dorothea Brande an actual fascist married to someone who had a fascist USA magazine or newspaper. She’s also one of the figurehead of the New Thought movement which is basically like, “you can overcome obstacles by positive thinking and rise and grind”.

Johanna Matthews

I remember you and Michael talked a lot about doing an HIV/AIDS episode - that would be my suggestion. Maybe Michael could be the guest!

Sarah Greene

The nuclear tests on Bikini Atoll— less a YWA and more of a “you’ve probably never really thought about”

Shelley Mesch

Les Mis! I feel like everyone thinks it's about the French Revolution, and I'm sure there's a lot to learn about the actual story

Nicole F.

Would love to see a “you’re right about” rapid fire. Where you talk about things like Mary Kay Laterno’s dad being too conservative for the John Birch Society.

Claire

Lizzie Borden????

Katie Fletcher

Late here, but the verdict just came back on the RaDonda Vaught case. I know it might not be completely common knowledge, but it’s huge in the nursing world. As a nurse, the whole thing terrifies me. I know you don’t typically do current events, but she’s a bit of a maligned woman of right now, and I really think you could do her story justice. CD

M

Hello, why not the far right movements in Europe and their link to Russia. In France their also have link to far right terrorist groups and other stuff like nazi-nostalgia. Thanks for your work <3

Jess Ballinger

Ex-vangelicals! I would love to hear from others who got out of the really gnarly evangelical churches… how they cope with the trauma afterwards… how long it takes to realize it actually WAS trauma! I feel for a long time the public perception of evangelical churches was kooky but essentially good. We were certainly wrong about that. (Former apostolic UPCI kid here)

Hannah Byl

I'd love an episode about big dairy, specifically the "got milk" campaigns and/or government cheese

Rachel

A YWA episode about the history of astrology would be awesome.

L

Adam Neely guest episode!

Meghan Kelly

Not to follow too closely with current popular culture… I just watched the Bad Vegan and the Tinder Swindler on Netflix… But romance scamming seems like there’s some interesting history underneath!

Leeanne wallace

I think your take on Boy bands would be really interesting. Specifically NSYNC and Lou Pearlman, or other boy band related controversies

Jenni Aj

As someone re-listening to the oj trial series, more oj trial series if you can possibly stand it

Matthew Shifflett

The “juvenile delinquency”scare in the 1950’s. The moral panic that gave us the Fonz!

Caitrín Mc Grane

I'm very late, But an episode on Typhoid Mary. It's a mad story!

Clara Nipper

This may or may not be in your wheelhouse, but please please please do an ep on the useless and infuriating Daylight Savings Time. Thanks for all your brilliant work!

Eo Segal

The Elephant Man. There's so much to unwrap. The 1980 movie (the story most Americans are familiar with) lead people to a completely bizarre understanding that doesn't reflect on the person or the history involved with any accuracy. And oh, did I mention the name most people know him by (John Merrick) wasn't his real name (Joseph Merrick) and the reason why is a continued debate?

Leorio

I'd love an episode about Elizabeth Warren!! Theres SO much misinformation about her! I feel like I'm correcting people all the time. It's really frustrating that people won't listen to me about the indigenous thing even though I'm indigenous myself. I think there's a lot here for an episode. Here are some common misconceptions: She lied about being Native American to get a job/scholarship/into college/money She "backtracked" on M4A She's a centrist She works for wallstreet instead of against it She's a secret republican She's a career politician She lied about Bernie telling her she couldn't beat trump She "stabbed" Bernie in the back by not dropping out and endorsing him. (she announced her run first) She ran for president just to split the progressive vote. She's the reason Bernie lost to Biden. I hope you see this! I'd love to hear your take on it!

plasticlime

is it too vague to say detroit? like the whole city??? i love detroit so much and it gets such a bad rap from outsiders and white michiganders. my grandparents lived in detroit in the 60’s during the riots and i always got the whitewashed version about why they had to flee to the suburbs, i recently went to an exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum about the Riots and it was incredibly eye-opening and heartbreaking to see how everything went down. current day detroit is facing the growing issue of gentrification. large fancy apartments, restaurants, and businesses, have moved downtown in the past 10+ years and they’re pricing out long-standing residents. also the misreality of the “good” work of the Illich family. 💛

Kara

As a previous park ranger, I second this.

Kara

Viola Liuzzo, a maligned woman from the 60s. She was gunned down by KKK members because she was a white woman driving with a black man in the car. One of the KKK men was a COINTELPRO (another great topic) informant. The FBI fabricated and spread lies in a smear campaign about her after her death. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_Liuzzo

I have been waiting for a Caroline Calloway episode for years

Rusty Staples

Just listened to the "grab bag" episode and I'd like to encourage a full episode on food expiration dates! I managed a food pantry and, in addition to it being the most exhausting work I've ever done, I learned so much about poverty, hunger, and food waste. Expiration dates are part of our training -- DYK that the only foods with federally regulated expiration dates are baby foods? All others are determined by manufacturers. Here's a chart used by many food banks to decide whether to hand out that expired can of beans you donated https://www.sfmfoodbank.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Code-Dates-Extensions_New_English.pdf Anyway, a full episode on expiration dates and food waste (like, what does happen to the scraps from baby carrots, or how much trash meal delivery kits generate) would be an eye-opener to a lot of listeners.

Tracey Guerin

I have a question. Why has Jarod Leto continued to enjoy Hollywood success when actors with similar reputations have been shunned. My understanding is that he is a sexual predator. Am I wrong?

Lucky Williams

This is pretty light hearted but the otherkin community. What started as a tradition in spiritual communities and somehow became a tumble cringe point of people identifying as “factive” which is being an otherkin of a real person

Belle

There’s a book called The Dungeon Master by the private investigator hired to find the kid who’s disappearance was blamed on D&D. Turned out the story was very different

Devin Asperger

It always bugged me that Nikola Tesla is made fun of for supposedly falling in love with a pigeon around the time he died. He was bedridden and poor, and if the pandemic has taught us anything, social isolation can cause us to have strong feelings about things we might not expect. He seemed to be a generally mythicized or misunderstood person and might be a god episode

Eleanor Y

Just listening to the Reply All episode on the TikTok trend "absolutely devious lick", and all I keep thinking is "Sarah, are you HEARING THIS!?" Moral panic about teenage mischief spread through social media that was started by one guy, who thinks he's an expert on teens, sharing rumours in his very popular Facebook page. An episode about the constant panic surrounding teenagers and the internet, and the irony that the real threat is adults and the internet, would be delightful.

Jessica Kirsner

Sorry this is so late, hopefully you still see it Sarah - I think an episode on women's sports (or even just women's basketball) would be wonderful. There are the current problems the sport has with keeping folks out based on arbitrary definitions of "being a woman" that always manage to impact black athletes the most; the history of the sports (women couldn't make chest passes in basketball because people thought their boobs would deflate!!), and all of the myths on women's sports not being profitable (how can you be profitable with no investment!? And when owners are specifically fighting to keep their teams in the red!?).

Anna Quarles

Richard Jewell. Remember him? Got pinned by the whole world for setting off a bomb at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. I remember how they made that poor guy sweat in front of the camera, red cheeked, just a security guard alone facing a world united in outrage.falsely accused. I remember feeling like his weight had something to do with people picking on him. Then collectively everyone realized he couldn’t have done it, and blithely moved on without apologizing. Don’t remember how he was proven innocent. Poor guy.

April Hughes

I LOVE when you do a 'book club discussion' on bad/popular at one-time books 📚 . My favorite!

Jace Frey

Please do an episode about Serial season 1 with Josie Duffy Rice!

Chloe

Please bring Michael Hobbes back on as a guest host to finish the OJ trial I need this

Marco

This might be niche, but Dr. Frederic Wertham is a polarizing figure in comic book history bc he caused a moral panic in his book Seduction of the Innocent! He contributed to a lot of censorship—but also helped desegregation and contributed to racial justice??

Katherine Hofmeyr

Continuing the criminal justice theme you've plumbed so well recently with Josie Duffy Rice, I'd love to hear an discussion with criminal psychologist Dr Julia Shaw (@drjuliashaw on Twitter) from the BBC podcast Bad People. Very similar level of nuance and empathy to YWA, and it would be a perfect fit!

Catherine Gering

Minimum wage - how it started, its actual purpose, and how people got so comfortable with it not being enough money to live on

Sarah S

I'm so curious to know what you think of Netflix "documentaries". I recently watched bad vegan and the tinder swindler. It seems like they are trying to warn people about these terrible men but they sensationalize the stories in such a way that the public just ends up criticizing the female victims and they don't discuss abuse and manipulation in a serious way. And they are so drawn out, with so little useful footage. (maybe that's all true crime? I haven't watched much.) I know you talked about tiger king a while ago which was the same director as bad vegan. And it's masquerading as prestige TV but it's not!!

Medha Pfaff

They already have a whole episode about Sex offenders.

I’d love an episode about the recording industry and record label contracts. So many people don’t know how often artists get taken advantage of and how much label executives can interfere with the creative process.

Cigarettes or the anti-smoking movement! A lot of countries still consume tobacco heavily. It will be interesting to see if“anti-smoking” culture is uniquely American.

I just stumbled across Dr. Bronner on Twitter today and it seems like there is A LOT there to unpack

Romance Novels! They are a maligned genre that can be intersectionally feminist actually! And an artifact and expression of women exploring what it means to be a woman in the world. There are tons of feminist romance novel podcasts whose hosts would make great guests. (I will throw out the name Jen Prokop but there are lots of great folks.)

Jessa Jayne

Dolphins. Hear me out they’re scary, they’re deadly and they have creepy dead eyes!

Alyssa Holguin

Tila Tequila! she is an original myspace celebrity who got an MTV reality show and had a huge following (the idea of reality tv show's in the US might be a whole episode in itself). She eventually dropped out of popularity and it appears she has a mental illness as of now, which seems to be influencing/ spiraled her into the alt-r unhinged content where she as of today talks about on her youtube series. There is a lot to unpack about her rehab, treatment in the public eye, mental illness, and how we as a society process and digest someone being engulfed in a radical ideology. I think it's always heartbreaking in the era of the internet seeing someone publicly record themselves in a time where maybe she should be getting help - but also grappling with feeling zero sympathy because she has adopted extremely problematic rhetoric.

Tayler Holt

Please do an episode on Jodi Arias. I’m from AZ and this case was huge. I’m not saying she didn’t kill him, but the narrative that was portrayed about their relationship leading up to the murder was inaccurate and spun in a way that was meant to preserve Travis’s mormon golden boy image and blame Jodi not only for his murder, but for him having sexual desires and doing things seen as “sin” in the church. Not to mention his entire friend group seemed to bully her. I’m not saying there’s any excuse to murder someone, but the story is much more complex than what the media portrayed and I don’t think it’s fair to say she was just a “woman scorned” or that it was “fatal attraction”. He wasn’t squeaky clean and neither is the mormon faith.

Luke Zwanziger

I guess MSG is ok in food now? Why the myth and what’s the accompanying social panic? I’m assuming some sort of capitalist trade war?

Annabelle Sweetall

Would LOVE something about over population/feasibility of having kids and future populations’ forecasted viability. My corner of the internet has lately been a lot of discourse on the “ethics” of having children now, assuming that the earth will be untenable in the near future. Some eco-activists are painting a picture that it’s unethical to have children and put a greater strain on the extractive capitalist system. Are we really handing off a dead planet to our children and grandchildren?

Caddy Wampus

I recently watched this documentary called Sons of Sam: Decent into Darkness that followed a reporter investigating the possibilty of accomplices in the Son of Sam murders. It had serial killers, satanic cults, wildly speculative reporting, connections to the post office, and references to snuff films! It was like a YWA greatest hits. I'd love to hear the YWA take on David Berkowitz, Maury Terry, and the satanic cult conspiracy theories around this case.

Patricia Duffy

Amanda Strachan

The complete misunderstanding of "stages of grief" (..anger denial bargaining etc...) We have taken her research so far in the wrong direction. I know I know it isn't pop culture related, but I think you could do a beautiful job debunking this misunderstanding and why it matters to the core of us as humans

Juliana Finch

Prince/The Artist I'm a new patron so apologies if this topic has been suggested already, but would love an episode on Prince's name change. People gave him so much shit about it but he had really good reasons for doing it! I remember all the press around it painting him as some kind of diva artist rather than actually talking about the shady record deal stuff. Love the show! ❤️

Abortion and criminalizing pregnancy! Imani Gandy or Jessica Mason Pieklo would be great guests. Or, if you're feeling really saucy, Renee Bracy Sherman would be excellent.

I’m not well read enough on this have an opinion, but something about the Depp/Heard trial makes me feel like there’s a YWA episode in the works.

Abigail McGee

did you guys ever finish oj simpson??

You should gather the You’re Wrong About Cinematic Universe, where you discuss movies which have covered topics you have also covered, and, discuss how much the movie aligns with the spirit of You’re Wrong About

Please continue toe oj Simpson trial series! I don’t care if it ever ends but I would love to hear more.

Cullin 'captain' Morgan

Koni 2012. Did this ever exist? Was he a real person? Were children actually being kidnapped and trained as war soldiers across Africa?

Meighan Boyd

A look at the TV shows like Hard Copy and Current Affairs to see which stories they covered and how they fit into the maligned women of the 90s story?

Khava Dobrenski

I recently learned there have not been any human remains found at the Kamloops Indian Reservation School. I remember there being all this media and mea culpas from politicians. I can’t find any information on any movement forward on this. Have you heard anything?

Bethany Good

Would love to hear more of the OJ trial. As someone with ADHD myself, I understand how overwhelming it must feel to try and dive back in now! We love you and your work! So no pressure!

Sarah Greene

I have vague memories from the 90s of just about weekly safety recalls on popular toys and a mini panic that would follow every time. Wonder if there’s fruit in that for an episode.

I know I’m WAY late to the game but I cannot find the debunking episode of the Summer Camp Book Club “Michelle Remembers.” Was it ever released? I know it was a while ago… but at least one listener still yearns for the debunking episode. If it has been released and I’m wrong, please, dear person reading this comment, let me know and I’ll resume my hunt for the episode! Sarah, you’re a treasure. Come visit your fans in Scotland soon!

Abby Snail

Werewolves! Or an episode on a variety of Halloween monsters (besides ghosts, witches, and demons since you've covered those) like what you did with exorcisms. Werewolves stick out to me in particular for our conception of 1) mental health 2) serial killers 3) anxieties surrounding agrarian society re: relative isolation and existing in a space we know has been taken from wild animals 4) masculinity 5) vagrancy interweaved with all of the above. Other monsters with potentially fertile ground for discussion include! Vampires (crumbling/dead aristocracy), sea monsters & aliens (vast depths of unexplored space, colonization), banshee (...women? and barn owls)!

Sheri Preston

I'd love one that looks into popular charities or fundraisers that don't actually raise funds/help people. I remember finding out how little my troop got for girl scout cookies and organizing direct-action fund donation instead of involving little brownie bakers as the middleman

Angellee S.

One of the maligned things I remember about Kim K. was how she got picked for bloating and weight gain during pregnancy. These are perfectly normal things to happen over the course of a pregnancy.

Angellee S.

The hymen. It’s the vaginal corona now. It doesn’t break or pop. Some scientists in Europe figured it out. I think they did a Ted talk.

Jesse Walker-McGraw

Oh also! The Amber Heard Johnny Depp situation. I'm hearing so much from all sides that it's impossible to figure out what's happening

jaap

Actually curious. What retoric is used to not amend the second amendment. Does the anti camp use bogus numbers? Are the politicians not held accountable? I'm really curious. We are starting to hear more about gunviolence in the Netherlands and it's baffling to me how this can keep on existing in this way. I know it's a loaded subject but I hardly understand why it's even a loaded subject.

Isabela Torres

Would love to hear Sarah's thoughts on the new season of stranger things and the whole satanic panic component of it! Maybe as a bonus episode or something?

Claire McGing

The myths and inaccuracies about Jack the Ripper. Hallie Rubenhold would be a brilliant guest.

Jennie Guidry

I second this one! Is personal responsibility really the issue, or was that a red herring put out there by Big Plastic? Discuss.

Ginger Baumgartner

I loved the little side pivot on the latest episode about the dyatlov pass about how/why people are so judgemental about parenting. I’ve been watching the rise of snark subreddits about various mom influencers. It is a very fascinating subculture, especially the Maia Knight and Alice and fern subreddits. These are both mom tik tok stars who live off of monetizing their children, and along with that have some alarming neglectful behavior they post about. The snark forums talk about this but also go crazy into mom shaming and slut shaming and all this other stuff and it is. Interesting. Would love to hear your thoughts Sarah!

Talia

Sarah! I’m a huge fan of YWA and I want to say thank you. The world feels less dark and impending when you’re distracted by the art of a great podcast. Having watched the series Big Love and Under The Banner Of Heaven, I want to recommend covering the FLDS, Mormonism and it’s relationship to the state of Utah. Lots to unpack there. Be well xxx

Alyssa

I’d love to hear Sarah break down her thoughts on Criminal Minds (or any other crime TV show).!

if you do the lasting impact of hippie backlash, please mention how hippies were the unexpected result of government drug testing, something politicians understood they had almost created or at least catalyzed in a lab. from the earliest days of the hippie movement the government was aware they were combatting the effects of psychedelics. And that's not new, the Spaniards tried to completely wipe out any tribes they found with the use of psychedelics as part of their religion, witches used belladonna, Native Americans struggled for years in court for the right to use peyote, anthropologist Marlene Dobkin de Rios has researched this pretty deeply and produced great texts.

Kimmerfest

Gosh the threshold for repealing the second amendment is just unfathomable. It would be almost impossible to pass an amendment to the constitution right now even if there were some discussion about it, which there isn't. After it passed the house and senate (I think a 60% majority is needed) it would have to be ratified by every state (not happening). This is why no one talks about that. Great idea to talk about guns though! Would definitely love to hear Sarah's take.

Kimmerfest

The role of police. Just listened to a radiolab podcast on this that was soooo enlightening!

jaap

Yeah all information would be awesome. Even a small adjustment seems to be met with protest. For me, a foreigner, it seems so weird that dead kids and mass shootings seem preferable as a solution than reducing gun access. I'm sure it's more complex than the way I word it now, but this is how it comes across.

Nero9341

Miranda rights and what the 5th amendment entails. A lot of shows and movies don’t really give a good idea of how they actually work. Also how the rights have changed over time, such as the decision of Berghuis v. Thompkins

Lex Clearwater

ones i haven’t seen yet: -tiktok challenges, such as tide pods, blue whale, blackout, momo. the moral panic + fast spread, if any of it really happened, + the general concern over kids’ internet usage & safety -ME/CFS, chronic fatigue syndrome: the ongoing research, history, the ‘im tired too!’ jokes, doctors’ incompetence + dismissal in diagnosis, the connection with long covid -disability benefits + rights: assumptions, history, joking about disabled people ‘having it good,’ how bad the benefits actually are, losing your benefits if you go over the money amount limit + how if you get married that limit goes for both of you + how many disabled people don’t get married because of this

Lex Clearwater

ones i second: communism + the red scare, recycling + the rise of zero waste brands + marketing, sex work + FOSTA/SESTA + the Earn It act, ayn rand, shakespeare, the satanic temple + the church of satan (comparisons, debunking, motives, history), unions, tiger king / carole baskin, psychedelics + drugs in general, death + the funeral industry

Rachel VIll

You mentioned Theranos in the Martha Stewart episode and I would love if you did an episode on that if that's not too trendy. I didn't follow the story, in part because I felt like it would be impossible to get a clear picture of what happened from news articles calling Elizabeth whatever-her-name-is a sociopath. I would also be really interested to hear your thoughts on some of the popular public intellectual/pop science writers and storytellers like Malcolm Gladwell, Jonah Lehrer, Jon Ronson, Michael Lewis etc.

Harvey

i hope you stumbled across Michael Hobbes' work on this! his twitter is a wealth and i was heartened by his work on that topic

MeLLL

I'd love if you talked about 'personality tests'. I had to do an online mini-personality test as part of a job application process, one of those stupid 'pick which word you identify with...there is no wrong answer'. Then they list a bunch of single words, with absolutely no context. What the hell is that supposed to demonstrate? Why is this even being used this way? Also, why resumes? Some of the conventions are so nonsensical (e.g. listing 'core competencies'). There has to be a better way to get a job.

MeLLL

Yes, I would especially like episodes related to disability benefits & rights.

Jen Lynch

Domestic abuse and how entangled it seems to be with masculinity. Writing from Australia and have been watching the public's literacy around this change during the pandemic. Jess Hill is an expert here, published a book a few years ago that won a dozen high profile awards. https://www.blackincbooks.com.au/books/see-what-you-made-me-do The chapter on masculinity literally blew my mind. Also covers 'where to', and we've new Respectful Relationships curriculum programs emerge recently: https://www.vic.gov.au/respectful-relationships Could be a follow-up to the DC Sniper and OJ series (or maybe as a way back into that one).

A book club on some of the literature produced by the ISSTD would be interesting. They are still the major propogaters of DID (multiple personality disorder) bunk theories, and the way they hide conspiratorial thought under a veneer of science is fascinating/horrifying. I'm doing an ongoing research project on their impact on internet wellness culture and can recommend some, but Richard Kluft's 'Shelter From the Storm' is especially awful and depressingly recent⛓️

Gabby Finan

three mile island and the nuclear power panic

em

Hurricane Katrina always seems to come up when I read about the topic of elite panic and the false idea perpetuated by authority figures that 'ordinary people' can’t handle crises without breaking out into violence. So much misinformation was spread around with false claims of violence and r*pe occurring in the relief centers and racist media figures condemning “looting” (i.e. salvaging food from flooded grocery stores before it spoils so people don’t starve). Just an awful microcosm of the US’ issues with authoritarianism and racism and misinformation, especially stemming from elites in times of crisis

Invite Classicist/Comedian Natalie Haynes on to talk about You're Wrong About Women in Greco-Roman Myth? Its kinda her whole thing and she has a book on Medusa coming out next year. She also does a BBC4 show called "Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics". Would be amazing to listen to your conversation.

Katie Larson

I’d love a classic Satanic Panic episode about Johnny Gosch and the Franklin Scandal. There’s the Netflix documentary on the conspiracy Noreen believed and a really good underlistened to investigative podcast from a few years ago (Faded Out - Season one) that interviews his dad and puts together a completely non satanic, local crime conclusion. It debunks a lot of the media, like America’s Missing Children documentary, and satanic narratives around kidnapping. I know this is months late and you and Chelsea already discussed this, but I am reading Michelle Remembers and thinking about ritual abuse.

Ryan Opton

A Mother Theresa episode would be really interesting! There’s a lot of “she was actually very bad” and “she was actually very good” information that flies around.

I can't remember where it was you guys talked about fan fiction but I just got so mad learning what a spec script is lol. so fan fiction is how you become a professional TV writer? and we don't tell the kids how sick it is that they're building that skill we just tease them for liking things ok

Hi Sarah! Could you do an episode about toxic shock syndrome? Coming of age in the mid 00s I was terrified of TSS. But I have a feeling it wasn’t super common. What was the reason behind all the warnings?

The Duggars and the IBLP. Looking at how all of the IFB mini cults popped up in the 80’s as a result of the satanic panic would be so interesting!!

You’re Wrong About … doing your own research. A show where we go past the wasteland that is Google’s page 2 search results. It’s obvious there’s A LOT of research involved around topics for the show and for the writing work you do and how you take the research and turn it into a narrative placed in context of how we view the world. I adore the podcast AND I am fascinated by unseen labor that makes it possible. One of the first things that drew me to the show was Mike and Sara being smart and talented researchers and writers who are also very real and charming people working through the what they thought they knew in order to expand their knowledge with grace, intellectual humility, humor, and respect. All of that is hard, messy, and time consuming. It’s also so, so important. In an age of “do your own research!!” I’d love to see process content that shows what goes into preparing for episodes, the research process, and specifically how we might be better able to identify, ask good questions, embark on quality research, and try to debunk our own assumptions and misconceptions so we can learn more about the things we’re wrong about in our own lives and around topics outside the scope of the show. I’d love to see the invisible work made visible so we can truly appreciate and celebrate Sara, Mike, and all of the amazing guests of the show while maybe learning to become better versions of ourselves as well. Thanks for continuously flinging yourself out there, Sara, in spite of how how awful internet people can be sometimes.

Something with the people of the Americas pre-columbus/pre-colonization please and/or about Vodou/Voodoo

Lindy Chamberlain, dingos, and "trial by common sense"! Everyone knew that it couldn't have been a dingo I'm surprised by how many people still don't know she and her husband ended up acquitted and the evidence is really strong that a dingo DID do it

You will love their episode from Dec. 19, 2018 🤗

Wish there was an upvote button—this would be an excellent episode!

Re-posting this with clarification. I feel like the ozone layer emergency and how we remember it is spiritually akin to the y2k crisis. I.e. the whole world sprung into action to avert crisis so effectively that now, people talk about it as a “nothing burger” and use it against climate alarmists. Growing up in the late 90s I never fully understood it so I’d love to hear YWA do a deep dive on the topic.

i know this is an old post but! i think an episode on michelle carter would be really interesting. i had my own “you’re wrong about” for her since i very much accepted a lot of the vitriol surrounding her trial. i feel like the more i learned about both of them, the more i realized that they were both incredibly troubled teenagers and the amount of hatred that the media/social media had toward her is pretty sad. (also i just listened to your gabbie hanna bonus episode and the idea of a trisha paytas bonus episode was alluded to and that sounds pretty interesting. i, too, love a deep dive into youtube drama)

an ep about periods would be super interesting! so many myths and misconceptions! like i think the opinions of like general science changed recently about if periods really sync? & if young uterus-havers getting their periods earlier is actually something to be concerned about? (maybe this is more maintenance phase territory!)

also: sylvia plath could be fun

& this is pretty heavy / has been mentioned in satanic panic eps, but the rise of anti-semitism in pop culture?

phineas gage! maybe as a sequel to the kitty genovese episode. another one of psychology's maligned figures

After listening to your outdoors focused episodes I'd be interested to hear your take on the 1967 Glacier Park bear attacks; the so called "Night of the Grizzlies". It's an interesting mixture of workplace malpractice, Western colonial ignorance, and the beautiful power of strangers helping strangers that seems up YWA's alley! (I'd also argue its a story that serves as a prime example that we would rather blame women and women's bodies before we hold government agencies accountable for their mistakes)

This post has over 1000 comments on it so probably there's been someone who has had the same idea, but I'd like to suggest the Christian moral panic around Pokemon. It has a lot of the usual Satanic Panic-isms that have shown up in other episodes, but Pokemon's status as an import from Japan means that there's also another layer of racism and xenophobia that can be looked at.

Hell, capital-E Environmentalism is probably an episode topic. Where did “saving the rainforest” come from and where has it gone? How did ideas like Earth Day and the EPA get so politicized in the first place?

Such a sad, awful story. I think an episode about why biological parents are allowed to continue to harm their children emotionally through the abuse investigation process would be good/eye opening. Some children are forced to be in the same room with abusive parents for visits even when they are scared of them and don't want to be near them.

I would love to hear episode about the manufactured panic about the American school system started during the Regan administration. This panic planted the seeds of providing public funds for private type education that are with us today (vouchers and charter schools. There is an excellent book about this topic-The Manufactured Crisis: Myths, Fraud, And The Attack On America's Public Schools by David C. Berliner (Author), Bruce J. Biddle (Author).
