Veruca GASH

Rotten.com definitely was our Faces of Death @_@ Blair Witch Project was one of the first horror movies/R-rated movies I ever saw.

Nicole Wagner

I will never forgive my mom for ruining the Blair Witch hoax for me before I could see it in the theater. I still loved the whole thang, but was really going with the marketing (also at tween age) and would have appreciated the full experience ;) Thanks for talking about this

Meredith Wemhoff

I didn’t watch this film until I was a freshmen in college in 2008. Definitely had me super scared and hella nauseous.

hey_boo

I’d love to hear Chelsey and Sarah talk more about Paradise Lost (and the problematic bits). The opening of that doc shook me to my core.

Sydney Beal

Climax is another great improv horror movie!!

Butch

the blair thumb, a parody where the characters are all thumbs, was literally a core part of my development as a human being

Erin

Whew, the Kennedy comments at the end are darkly ironic now 🥴

Kati Rosado

I am unbelievably excited for this. TBWP is in my top 10 favorites of all time.

Console Canon

Blair Witch + Chelsey Weber-Smith, two great tastes!

Matthew Nelson

I have loved and defended BW since I first saw it (the night after I watched the TV documentary) and I remember being scared and thrilled because we knew it was a movie, but… It has been unfairly maligned and 30 years on May get its due with more conversations like this. Thank you both! (Love CWS!!!)

Gary Wismer

You guys rule, together!❤️❤️❤️

Gary Wismer

And also independently, but love when you collaborate

winter

i love chelsey so much

programalice

Me: forgetting what a Charon is and wondering why there are so many angry white women name Karen hanging outside these stranger’s tents. Well that sounds like a great horror movie!

Shireen Shakouri

I live in DC and I've heard from MD locals that they believe Blair Witch borrowed from the Moll Dyer witch legend, which took place closer to coastal MD about 2 hrs from Burkittsville

alli moulton

Rock Karens? To mark a trail? What is that?

Shireen Shakouri

Cairns* like those stacks of flat rocks you see sometimes

Rose

I ended up going down the rabbit hole on the Paradise lost west memphis 3. Never heard of it before. Anyone got any good podcast recs for it?

yourewrongabout

not what you asked for but Rachel Monroe's Savage Appetites has a chapter about it!

Ali Clawson

Thank you for the trip down memory lane! I always know it's going to be great when we get a Weber-Smith addition.

Rachel Wilhoyte

I remember not buying into the story being real but going down some serious rabbit holes about how the movie was made. I think it appealed to the merry trickster in me.

Marissa Lariviere

I loved the tangent about the Paradise Lost director- I had no idea he made other films, much less Blair Witch 2 and the Ted Bundy movie!!!

Marissa Lariviere

Anyway, I will DEFINITELY be watching Curse of the Blair Witch soon

Liska Ostojic

If you like Blair Witch you *must* listen to this interview with a documentary filmmaker who filmed the behind the scenes on set, and then Paramount blocked the release of the documentary for utterly inexplicable reasons. It was just the most fascinating production model, a kind of ultra collaboration. It made me appreciate the movie on a whole new level: https://www.patreon.com/posts/28374261 And then they shared a teaser and few clips from behind the scenes: https://www.patreon.com/posts/28642994

Liska Ostojic

Watching the clips and I’m mad all over again that they killed the documentary ☹️

Robert Gougher

You might enjoy researching the play Terra Nova, which is strikingly similar plot wise to the Blair witch Project. Terra Nova Played in Boca Raton a year or two before Blair witch was shot. Upon seeing Blair witch in the theater at its opening I was continuously struck by the similarities. Heather is much more like Robert Scott than Kurtz.

Shireen Shakouri

Also, the town of Burkittsville kept needing to change their "welcome to" sign because teens kept stealing them!!!

Nicole Zeckner

They kind of look like rock versions of stacking rings, but are used to mark a trail where it's not clear. Or they're supposed to be. But now people just stack them up anyplace in parks. Which sounds like harmless fun, but disturbs the ecosystem. It removes surfaces for algae to grow and oxygenate water, limits areas where different animals can make nests (and destroy nests already there), and can cause erosion if there are enough of them.

Fred Maxon

Me, thinking of how this film was maligned: It's like the horror-movie version of Titanic. Sarah, moments later: It's like the backlash to Titanic.

Brenna

Glad I listened to this episode because the ending of the Blair Witch Project finally makes sense. I just never noticed that ‘facing the corner’ detail at the beginning. 😁

Suzanne

I never had the opportunity to see BW but the way you spoke about it reminded me of my experience watching Snow on Tha Bluff

Shannon Smith

I live in Baltimore with a separate upstairs apartment area in my house. Let me know if You're Wrong About needs to make a Maryland field trip!

Laurin Paradise

I wound up on a camping trip as a teenager after we'd all seen this movie, and it was way up in upstate New York, so...bears. So we learned pretty early on in the trip that bears weren't as bothered by the whole banging on pots thing as we'd been lead to believe. Anyway, one night we went on a hike, came back and the bags had been pawed at (prints near them on the ground) and there was slime on them, that I'm still pretty sure came from like, bear spit, but one of my fellow campers took a look at that whole situation and went instead 'Oh my god! It's like in Blair Witch you guys, oh no!'

Cheryl Rosbak

I was 27 when Blair Witch came out, and watched it with no clue about the mythology. I knew it wasn't real, and I'd ignored the website assuming it was just an ad, so I went into it only knowing it was horror. Not knowing the mythology before watching meant I was mostly confused; the stuff at the beginning was so random-seeming (and probably mostly inaudible to me) that I had no clue what happened at the end. I didn't even know what the handprints were about.

Jen O'Neal

Thinking about hoaxes and early internet, I'd LOVE y'all to cover lonelygirl15 and that whole phenomenon. I followed it all along as a 14 year old with early YouTube and was VERY convinced it was real for a very long time.

Keith Shustov

You have an amazing gift for using a single reference to magically put me right where I was when I first experienced a pop culture item. You said the words “Compaq presario” and I was instantly in 1999.

Erin Routson

I somehow watched Blair Witch on a bootleg VHS tape in my friend's rural basement in 1999 and it scared the hell out of me because those circumstances made it seem even more real.

nico

I was SO EXCITED when I heard you did an ep about this. Someone needs to make a documentary about this 💕

apothekerrie

I feel so seen! Blair Witch is one of my favorite movies, and I think the performances (specifically Heather) are incredible. It drives me nuts when people say the acting is bad. It feels so real IMO!

Shae Lillian

Oh fark, rotten.com, my 90’s bosses favourite tool of torment. *shudders*

Amanda Weymouth

Just here to say I love Chelsey Weber-Smith as a guest in this show so much! You two have such good chemistry and I love listening to your convos

Dee Dee Chapman

Omg I was saying "yes!" throughout most of this. The website! Rotten.com! The acting is amazing (whether they are actors or townspeople)! Also, I watched this when I was 10 on NYE 1999 (already scared about something I didn't understand- Y2K) in a cabin in the woods. Credits roll & behind the TV is the sliding glass door, just showing me the dark, dark, woods.

Leyna Maves

Your comment on BW's power to immerse made me think of some of the new online horror series that have been gaining traction lately. The Mandela Catelogue and Alex Kansas's Monument Mythos feel like spiritual successors with the small production team/budget, and the way they're framed as something for the viewer to "stumble upon". Would love to hear your thoughts on this new wave of horror!

Melissa

I saw this movie in theatre when it came out in 1999. Going into it I didn't know if it was real or not. By the time the movie was over it was dark out. I had to drive home out to the country where I lived, in the dark all by myself. I was so freaked out, even if I was still skeptical at the end. Great movie!

Leila Emery

I remember seeing this in the theater with my best friend, who "ruined" my naive belief that the film was really found footage by saying that it couldn't be real because Heather's hair was "too clean" lolol. Also, that scene at the end? With him dead silent facing the wall? Fucking terrifying, even now.

Angellee S.

I remember being in 8th grade and my friend sending me that site. Of course I bought it. The Blair Witch website was a very early viral marketing that reminds me of the Mojave Phone Booth and a thing The Ring tried later. Around 2004-06 one of a sequels to The Ring (I think?) tried a pre-Twitter viral marketing campaign. My friends and I found a VHS in a parking structure near the Burbank IKEA. It had no label or writing on it at all. My friend’s boyfriend insisted on acting all freaked out about it and went outside. After we watched he came back inside and the house phone rang with no one on the other end. I think we were a little rattled? The boyfriend admitted he had called the house on his cell phone before walking back in. The real giveaway was the amount of tape inside the VHS wasn’t as much as normal blank tape. I emailed Snopes and they never responded. 10 years later I found the tape when I was moving and put it in the free stuff pile inside the laundry room. 😉

Nikki Robison

great episode! always love when Chelsea is on

Elizabeth Futrell

"Any rock can be a rock that's something fucked up happened on, that's American history right there". I felt this in my bones because I started riding my bike recently on a new portion of greenway in my town and lo and behold there's a got-dang "Trail of Tears" foot path marker on the paved trail. It's a bit harrowing when you remember atrocities happened literally in your backyard in some cases

Kerry Luckett

Holy Hell! I taught The Crucible in my drama class two falls ago, and everything you and Chelsea say about “mobilizing the fear of harming children” is the very start of that play and the actual historical event. It was all veiled in the act of protecting “innocence”—children. That ideology stayed on a continuum to now. I have a lot to think about now. Thanks.

Nicole

For some bizarre reason my mom took me to see the Blair Witch when it first came out. I was so terrified I squatted in the theater chair and covered my eye with my knees. Later in high school I watched it during a sleepover I was having while my parents were out of town. After everyone left the next I thought I heard noises coming from the basement. I was so scared I had a friend come get me. I stayed at their house until my parents got home. Lol. I’m not going to take any chances watching it as an adult but I did enjoy this episode!

Courtney O

Loved this episode SO MUCH. And shout out to the WM3! You could do so much with that case for an episode. "You're wrong about" the end results of the doc. You said that these men are free, technically, they are not; They got out of prison on an Alford plea, the law still sees them as guilty. The only reason they took the plea was because Damien was going to be executed, Jason has said this in podcast interviews before. The State of Arkansas says they are not "innocent," they are still "convicted child murderers" and fighting every day to get DNA evidence tested to prove their actual innocence. It's such a harsh story that has continued passed the Paradise Lost phenomenon. ***Also, technically, Damien does not do Wicca, he does Magick! He has a Patreon where he does video lectures and live demonstrations. I believe he even offers one on one training for higher tier holders. I'd love to hear more about the Satanic Panic + WM3 situation from the "You're Wrong About American Hysteria" wheelhouse.

William WV

Creepiest thing about the film for me was months after I saw it, when I heard that Heather worried during the filming that it might be a snuff film.

hothotpot

Hearing Sarah talk about wanting to invite her demons in has made me realize I want nothing more than to hear her talk about The Babadook.

Mindy Duddy

Love this episode! I was that teenager that rented all the Faces of Death videos, and no one understood my love of horror movies. I also remember seeing Blair Witch when in college, and repeatedly standing in the corner to freak out my friends afterwards 😬

Corrina Wynne

This was such a good episode!! Would love to hear Chelsey on the pod more, you both work really well together imo :)

Rachel

I was in high school when this came out and I remember renting it and being extremely bored and disappointed. I guess after growing up in Washington it just kind of came across as a bunch of teenagers acting like assholes in the woods. It is always fun listening to your commentary though and getting more insight on the movie, I'll have to give it a rewatch.

LM

I was so into the "documentary" but I had to wait to watch the movie till it was on VHS(?) because I was a young teen. The part with the wall also scared the shit out of me. Thank you for this episode!

beatrice

fun fact, Mike was my middle school guidance counselor. he was great ! so nice
