Get your notebooks out, we're going over the gay agenda. Pride isn't over until it's over, and American Hysteria's Chelsey Weber-Smith is telling us a tale of Jerry Falwell, Sandy Cheeks, the Camp Crystal Lake school of economic policy, and queer survival--and we learn that, in the end, the straight agenda is the one we really need to worry about. Best enjoyed with an Anita Bryant cocktail.

I was five years old in 1999 and watched Teletubbies every morning. Eventually, my mom stopped allowing me to watch the show. When I asked why she said that the show was teaching kids that “it’s OK for boys to like boys and for girls to like girls”. This didn’t make sense to me at the time. My mom is now on her third marriage to her SECOND wife.

I'm just in awe of that enormous monstera leaf 🌿

Chelsea

Your voices just scratch and itch that I can’t express

April Phillips

I’m down a mental rabbit hole with the SpongeBob characters 🤣 The only ones who have straight energy are the bad guys— Mr Krabs and maaaaybe Plankton?Plankton’s “wife” is female coded but also a robot, who is also in it against her will, so that’s a whole different mess. Very serial killer tho.

Veruca GASH

One of my favorite - and one of the most upsetting - topics. Sidenote: I just saw a sticker on the door of a gas station promoting lotto tickets that said "Family Friendly." Lol.

Heidi

I wasn't expecting that TWIST at the end 🤣

Bridget

Great ep. Love hearing you and love hearing Chesley!

Ellen

Fellas is it gay to like Barbie? is such a weird one to me

Katie

Just for accuracy it was the the American PSYCHIATRIC Association that removed homosexuality from the dsm. Which they still publish today (on version 5-tr now).

Alex Grawe

Of all the made-up anti-gay nonsense, I'm most disappointed that we don't have more heavily armed lesbian gangs out committing a number of crimes :(

Dinah Gregory

Gah, Sarah and Chelsey, you made me cry again! Great episode and Sarah, your description of the awkwardness and discomfort being self-harm hit so many triggers for me 💡💡💡I am nearly 43 for gods' sake, how do I not know these things about myself already?! Love you guys, love your work, and thank you 💜

Angelle Bonnecarrere

I agree, Sarah, that it was meant to make "the gays" lonely, but then also was that on purpose? Make them lonely enough to be hetero again?

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

Ah Anita Bryant. My wife is still so angry about how she sullied the good name of Orange Bird. In fact they yelled "Justice for Orange Bird" at the You Are Good show in Philly when Sarah brought Anita up.

Melanie Schlosser

Total side note, but there is an ACTUAL gay Batman! Tere Michaels wrote a trilogy that starts with Who Knows The Storm that's about a gay vigilante in a post-collapse New York. She has stated in interviews that she felt there should be a gay Batman so she made one. 😂 https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/23254162

This episode was incredible. I can’t stop thinking about it. Are there any resources you can point us to to read more about the puritans’ straight agenda? That was so fascinating and I have never heard it before. Thank you both so much for another wonderful episode.

Jackie Kent

There’s something so comforting hearing two people who know each other well have a discussion- it’s just lovely, even when it’s about hard things

Ren

Does Chelsey (or anyone else) have some recommendations of sources about the stuff about queer Native Americans and the settler reaction? I know nothing about that but I would LOVE to read more.

sam forney

please release this to everyone!! it’s so good and deserves more listeners than just us!! ❤️❤️❤️

Leanne

Yes and also a you’re wrong about gender (not a small topic at all!) I’d love to have a better backing when I try to argue the construct of gender other than it’s not black or white 🤕

harry

I LOVE GAY PEOPLE 🌟❤️

Sam

Sarah!! Welcome!! We’ve been waiting for you 🤍

Ruby

When I was a teenager, I painted a rainbow on my school planner and called it "the gay agenda." Loved this episode!

Scarlett Bradford

You know the scene in the original Top Gun where Goose’s wife tells Charlie that hearts are breaking wide open all over the world tonight because unless Charlie’s a fool, everyone can see Maverick is off the market. Yeah that, but in the opposite for all the Sarah girl crushes, especially the sapiosexual ones, out here when Sarah spoke her truth! :) Also in college I had a bumper sticker that read “Jerry Falwell can suck my Tinky Winky” :)

Moe Higgins-Jones

This community is just the freaking best ❤️ Happy pride, Sarah!

alexa 🌼

the end of this one really got me 😭🩵

Jetlag Jessica

Ahhhh, the tears! Chelsey, your love and care in asking Sarah whether she wanted to talk more just… my heart, y’all. As someone whose first attempt at coming out to friends (decades ago, now) was met VERY badly, the last few minutes of this episode were so healing and wonderful. Love you both immensely. 💖💖

Justin Squizzero

Beautiful conversation and Sarah, I’m so glad you’re inviting us all along for your journey. I hate to be this guy, but might I suggest covering the actual Puritans for an episode? I love Chelsea’s perspectives and it’s always a treat to have them on the show, but their use of the word is, to my knowledge, well, Wrong About. The Puritans were an English religious movement that was limited to a specific geography and time in American history, and ascribing all American conservatism to them means overlooking its myriad other roots at our peril. I nitpick only because I love what you both do and believe in the power of your ability to help us learn more about ourselves. Thank you for always inspiring.

Noelle Ichelle

Thank you both so much for this conversation! I helped me open my moms eyes to so much of the indoctrination and religious trauma that was inflicted upon her as a child via the church, and our family’s conservative values. Also Sarah -your coming out has giving me the courage to reassess and redefine my own sexuality and I’m just very grateful for these conversations. Love love love!

Leilani Wolfe

If you could only hear the squeal I made when Sarah dropped a Kids in the Hall reference! Sizzler Sisters forever ❤️

Jennifer

Thank you so much for this episode. On a personal note, as someone who also only identified as queer in my 30s, I really appreciate the discussion at the end. Thank you so much for being open, Sarah. I also had the whole "is it stolen valor?" thoughts and moments. Like am I just pretending to be queer, because I love my queer friends? And my queer friends were like "yeah no. straight people aren't questioning this much." This show has meant so much to me in terms of really pushing me to focus on empathy and center that in my life. And it means a lot to see my experience reflected and discussed here as well, so thank you, Sarah, for sharing that with us. It's so helpful, and I really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability.

Jen

Same here! My little Canadian Gen X heart swelled with pride when I heard that.

Julia

Omg yes the stolen valor thing resonated so much with me too! I am still figuring it out, and it’s a bit more complicated being in a very loving monogamous heterosexual marriage - sometimes I question whether it even makes sense to think about it now. But with that stolen valor comment… I immediately was like wait a second… that sounds like me 🤯

ella b

Sarah and Chelsey- thank you so much for this beautiful episode! I appreciate the care you guys put into this so much. The magic of YWA is strong in this one- taking a topic that is emotional and sad and making me feel hopeful for the future at the end! Thank you for sharing your experiences!🌈💓

Moth

I mean, we could work on that? It feels very aspirational.

Miriam

So, did they say something in the episode about Puritans trying to settle in California in 1775? I might have misheard something, but I'd like to look up the quote that was mentioned, because I don't believe there were any Puritans in America as late as 1775, nor were there any "Americans" in California as early as 1775... I went to public school in Virginia in the 1990s, which means I was never really taught in school that the US was founded by Puritans trying to escape the English government. That message came from TV sitcoms. In school, we were taught Virginia was founded as an outpost of the government of England, with the goal of finding gold or trade routes, and then that most of US history happened in Virginia until like, 1870.

Maciej Gieradka

Guys, what is this episode where someone tells Sarah about all the pseudoscience of fingerprints etc? It's a recent episode but I can't find it

Morgan Vega

probably CSI: Junk science with Josie Duffy Rice, from Feb 21 last year

MsChessnudt

You had me at Sandy Cheeks.. I do wish I were in Texas sometimes: the ocean is most definitely no place for a squirrel.

emily

I have admittedly not yet finished this episode. BUT I was just saying I *need* someone to do a multi-episode podcast on the persecution of educators today, how it is similar/related to the satanic panic...eh? Eh? Take this theme and do a deeper dive together into the mistreat and mistrust of educators, especially queer educators, educators of color? Maybe even back to the foundation and formulation of public education in the US which has its own history of indoctrination. This could also include a look at local schoolboard meetings which are WILD and all of the discriminatory bills being passed. Education in NH (where I teach) is also being systematically attacked and there was even a (basicslly) state sanctioned bounty on teachers if they broke some new ambiguous law about teaching US history in a positive light (or some such nonsense). Anyway, it's a huge ask - but it would be so deeply appreciated by so many teachers!

Daniel Brandes

Sarah, you were thinking of hamentaschen. Eaten during Purim.

Cait B

Really late on this, sorry, but I came here to say the same thing!! I told a friend about that bit, and she was like "THAT'S YOU!!!" I'm so glad Sarah helped me reframe it in my brain as self harm. That was truly so helpful. ❤️🌈

Katharina

Such a great episode. Thank you so much.

Brian Spurlock

Hey can Cheley link the diarist she mentioned? I don't know that the puritans specifically would have encountered the Crow or any Sioux but Osh-Tisch was Crow so they're certainly among the peoples with more than the most common gender options.

hey_boo

“We’re a couple of sisters!” Oh Sarah — your kids in the Hall references give me LIFE! I feel so seen

Suradha

Thank you for sharing your queerness, Sarah, it helps and makes the world better for a lot of people generally and me particularly because of how much I obsess over the validity of my flavour of queer

Briana Townsend

Listening from the terrible future and this episode felt beautiful and painful. And hearing Sarah’s queer journey felt very familiar to me so thank you for sharing your story and helping me feel less weird and alone 🩷

Wendy Trimbel

Listened to this for at least the third time since it ‘came out’ lol. Absolutely love this episode

Lilith Anderson

When I realized I was a trans woman, it was kind of really just me really giving the possibility ANY kind of credence. Like when I finally allowed my mind to crack open that box, it became so profoundly clear. I truly truly could not unring that bell!

Lilith Anderson

And like, I was kind of masquerading as a 'straight man' who did not act like other straight cis men at all, and it was easy to chalk it up to "straight cis men are OBVIOUSLY TRASH" cuz like, they are. And it was also very hard to differentiate between "god this woman is hot" and "god I want to look like her/be her" and like! Turns out cis men think about being a woman literally never, wild to me.

Lilith Anderson

And Sarah you really hit the nail on the head with the "it fully doesnt matter if I feel numb" like!

Britt

I remember as a child everyone losing their MINDS bc Tinky Winky had a purse.. and they said it was a “magic bag” . Guess the gay agenda worked bc I turned out gay 😂🌈👛👜

Britt

Sounds like Sandy had to leave texas and move under the sea bc of homophobia
