Dear Journal:
I was planning to tear sissy a new one for dumping my clothes on the stairs, but I didn’t see her Sunday night. Then I didn’t see her at all yesterday either (I stayed after school to help decorate for the fall festival—I know, right? Who’d have thunk?) I knew I’d see her this morning, however, so I was ready. I even wore the trendy light blue V-neck sissy had left crumpled in a heap.
But when she came downstairs, my anger dissipated into pity.
Sissy’s taking classes at the community college. Not a full load, but close. (Kind of like her figure, LOL!) Anyway, on Tuesdays and Thursdays she has an early economics class. It’s about the only time we see each other anymore, outside of the odd (and oddly quiet) family dinner. And…this is going to seem weird…when I DO see her, I don’t really see her. Not my sister, I mean.
Sissy primped for hours in the bathroom before school, getting her hair and makeup just right. This person didn’t wear makeup and wore their hair in a messy bun. Sissy wore the latest fashions. This person wore bulky sweats. Sissy ate fruit and yogurt for breakfast. This person grabbed a donut from mom’s secret stash inside a mixing bowl behind the microwave.
I didn’t recognize this person.
However, as they shuffled quietly out the front door, powdered sugar dusting their cheeks and chins (yes, chins), I realized that I DID recognize them.
It was me. Sissy was turning into me.
I may need another therapy session with Dr. Chen.
