Thai GL Fan Meets Are INSANEโ€ฆLetโ€™s Talk About It ๐Ÿ‘€ | The GL Group Chat Ep. 4

Welcome back to The GL Group Chat! ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’š GL Spiral ๐ŸŒ€ and The GL Pulse ๐Ÿ’“ are back โ€” and this time, we're talking about the INSANE world of Thai GL fan events. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’ธ Because apparently, watching our favorite actresses on a screen isn't enough anymore. Now we're buying tickets to stand in the same room as them, paying for photos that last approximately four seconds, walking past them in hi-byes, collecting trading cards like they're rare Pokรฉmon, and somehow convincing ourselves that spending an unreasonable amount of money on women we've never actually met is a perfectly normal thing to do. ๐Ÿ˜‚ And honestly? We'd probably do it again. In this episode, we're breaking down EVERYTHING about Thai GL fan events, from fan meets and photo opportunities to hi-byes, trading cards, fan gifts, and the experiences that make you forget every word you've ever learned the second your favorite actress looks at you. ๐Ÿ˜ญ We're also getting into the money behind it all. How much can you actually spend being a GL fan? When does a thoughtful gift become a little excessive? And why are some companies seemingly sitting on international fanbases that would happily throw money at their favorite ships if someone would just give them the opportunity?! ๐Ÿ‘€ Of course, we're talking about the differences between international and Thai fandoms, what companies are getting right, what they could be doing MUCH better, and whether the industry is making the most of the global GL audience. Because there are some ships out there that could be selling out international fan meets, and we have QUESTIONS. ๐Ÿ˜‚ And naturally, we couldn't make it through an episode without getting distracted, so we're also bringing back some of our favorite Group Chat segments: ๐ŸŒ€ SPIRAL OF THE WEEK What GL-related thing has had us completely spiraling this week? Because apparently, we don't have enough going on in our brains already. ๐Ÿ“ OFF DUTY & FRUITY The actresses are off duty, but are they REALLY? We're bringing our own public moments to the Group Chat and deciding whether they're ๐Ÿ Completely Innocent, ๐ŸŠ Hmmmm..., ๐Ÿ“ FRUITY, or ๐Ÿ’ MA'AM??? ๐Ÿ‘€ This podcast is our place to talk about GL series, actresses, ships, fandom culture, industry news, chemistry, hot takes, events, and all the completely ridiculous things that happen in the GL universe. And apparently, it's also where we question our spending habits, debate whether walking past a woman for four seconds counts as a meaningful life experience, and wonder why the companies behind our favorite pairings aren't making it easier for us to give them our money. ๐Ÿ’ธ But underneath all the chaos, there's something special about GL fan events. The friendships, the shared excitement, the moments with actresses we've spent months watching through a screen, and the feeling of being surrounded by people who love the same things you do. So after all the awkward photos, questionable spending decisions, expensive gifts, and four-second interactions... WHY DO WE KEEP GOING?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And more importantlyโ€ฆ which ship would YOU buy a fan meet ticket for tomorrow without even checking the price first? ๐Ÿ‘€ Don't forget to like, subscribe and turn on notifications so you don't miss the next Group Chat! ๐Ÿ“ฒ Notifications ON. Hey, didn't see this live but enjoyed the info abt gl events. I'm with you on the expensive gifts, I just don't get it other than maybe some fans try to 'buy' a perceived closeness. I also think it's this perception of entitlement that sees fans invading an actress's privacy if they feel wronged. On the other hand, I don't really know how much these women are paid to act in each series, but the more popular ones also receive money from being brand ambassadors. I think I recall reading /hearing that the cash given is split between the company and actresses but idk the % each get.

I also liked the idea of catering a little more to international fans. Europe is finally receiving some attention but unfortunately I don't think Aus/NZ will ever be as fortunate ๐Ÿ˜” Taking your idea of GMMTV building their own venue a little further, why couldn't all the companies invest in such a project? Or if GMMTV went at it solo (or even the Thai govt who already sponsor some series), they could lease it out to other companies; but not sure of conflict of interest laws there. Too, spreading the events out better across the year, and with decent warning of when they are held would give international fans much more opportunity to attend.

I do think the companies leave money on the table when it comes to not translating the content online. So many vlogs and reactions have no English or other translation. I know you can now (for most if not all videos) watch the video via an internet browser for YouTube and manually switch on English (or other languages) subtitles but they can be a bit iffy sometimes in terms of accuracy as they struggle with slang or idioms (or even names). It always frustrated me when Idolfactory did that with their reactions and Lives, that they wouldnโ€™t add any English subtitles, and Iโ€™ve seen it plenty of times with Northstar and other companies as well. I understand thereโ€™s a cost but if you are uploading to an international platform (i.e. YouTube) and you are trying to grow your audience why exclude most of the global audience when you could increase your views by 2x or 10x dependent on the video interest (particularly longer videos) by adding subtitles. Grumble, grumble๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Re the gifting of luxury items, it does kind of feel like itโ€™s something that only the wealthiest fans would even attempt and if they have the money I guess thatโ€™s on them if they are trying to show off (I think the personalised / sentimental gifts are probably more appreciated by the celebrities and more realistic a gift from the fans). In terms of the actresses being rich I think it varies wildly, most I think are not, but that skews heavily the other way in certain companyโ€™s GLs (like Ch3 or some of Star Hunter Entertainment), but just because some of the cast still live at home with their parents in a luxury mansion, their partner might be living in a one bed condo trying to afford their first home / car and trying to gift their elderly parentsโ€™ financial security as well. In essence I donโ€™t think itโ€™s bad if wealthy fans want to give money to their โ€˜idolsโ€™ if it means something to them and their celebrity isnโ€™t very well paid in their job, and the fans can afford it. I do think itโ€™s bad if the fans feel pressure to do it and they are living beyond their means to do so. Itโ€™s also possible the kids of the wealthy parents (though they are hardly suffering) are just trying to create their own career and a healthy bank account balance, and their parentsโ€™ wealth is not their own, more of an illusion of one.
