hey everybody! hot off the presses (DaVinci Resolve export screen) is my latest video — a sequel to my CD listening experiment, but this time, i listened to only the radio for all of Jan 2025. this video is out today on here and over on Nebula, and it'll be out on YouTube tomorrow. it was a lot of fun to make, not just with doing the experiment but also with editing the video itself, and i hope you all enjoy it!

These month-long experiment videos are a good time. I hope January 2026 Mic goes full mix-tape on us. I haven't listened to the radio since 2018. I blame a combination of Drake and Post Malone. Also, my favorite classic rock station turned into a contemporary Christian station.

As someone in the UK, our radio is way different. For example, there are the main big stations like the BBC stations, and the ones owned by Global Media (Capital, Classic FM, Radio X, LBC). Then you still get the local stations. Most of the bigger ones have been bought out in recent years. For example, the biggest station in Glasgow (my home city) has become a skinned version of Hits Radio, though a few famous hosts have been kept on doing local shows (Breakfast, A football pundit program and a few hours of rave during the weekends) Even down in Liverpool, with the Radio City Tower shown in the video, they shut down the tower’s radio facilities last year and fully rebranded the station to Hits. But in some communities, you can still find one or two proper local stations. One that I’ve been keeping tabs on is internet radio. One of the most popular internet radio stations in the world even comes from a little café in Glasgow. You can find anything on there—from Afrobeat, DNB, to even Soul. This small community of stations reminds me of the days of pirate radio, when the Beeb were the only game in town. My Uk Radio choices are: BBC Radio 6 Radio Buena Vida Clyde One

Really great video! It’s actually funny because I feel like most of my personal radio experience in the past like 5 years hasn’t been through traditional FM radio, but through SiriusXM which has a bunch more variety in the channels (probably because it’s not locked to local stations). Through it, I’ve legit gotten into full genres I probably wouldn’t have before (shoutout the Yacht Rock station). Anyways, love these month long experiments and really excited to see next year’s (if it ends up happening!)

Ooooh a Tuesday treat! This was so fun to watch, I can tell you've found your groove with making videos again and that makes me so happy! As someone who listened to pop/country/alternative radio throughout high school, I have to say it is wild seeing how little it's changed since the 2010s. You really hit the nail on the head with the inherent need to yap! Though I'll throw you another one - listening to other people yap makes it feel like you have friends. Which is why YouTube's become what it is now, I suppose. Just some things to think about! Fantastic job, as always ☺️

One place I've noticed a big change in music consumption is restaurants take-outs and cafes. From small businesses to fast food, a lot of radio play has been phased out of these places in favour of giving employees freedom of music. So much so that a lot of them have tablets on storefront walls with spotify always open. It's always a treat to go somewhere to eat and hear music that feels like someone's playlist rather than hearing stick season for the 5th time that day. It can be wildly diverse. I've heard Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus in KFC, a new cafe i went to had gorillaz and empire of the sun which was awesome, and this chinese i frequent will have blackmetal one day, k-pop and vocaloid the other and not like us explicit played 5 times in one day (idk how they got away with that) I can honestly see people vibing to and discovering new music this way. It makes the ambience in a public setting feel just a little bit more personal and human.

Love this. These experiments are so fun! And yes, I also listen to the radio pretty regularly! I’ve got a couple college stations on the pre-sets (you’re right, that’s where the Good Good is), an oldies station (late 50s-70s pop), one that’s exclusively modern pop (so like… “Espresso” and Taylor every five songs), and one that prides itself on being a “random mix,” which is usually like going from Michael Jackson to Imagine Dragons to R.E.M. but it’s varied enough to keep it fresh. Radio is nice because it’s like a grab bag. I just jump in the river and see what’s flowin’! Feels like channel surfing when cable was all there was, ya know?

Loved this video! I can definitely tell you enjoyed editing this one, it was so fun!

great video mr the snare :) i'm a daily listener of radio in melbourne, australia so this experiment is right up my alley nowadays i almost exclusively listen to independent community radio. we have some great stations (my frequent ones are 3CR, 3RRR and PBS) and their programming spans so many genres of music and genres of yap. being that they're community funded as well there's a lot more local/underground music as well as being able to talk about more contentious topics and issues without fear of backlash from advertisers/top dawgs. i've heard some great conversations and found some great bands. love it a lot :)

enough music, chris!

the restraint to not make a twenty one pilots joke after saying “car radio” that many times was breathtaking

my ears perked up during the part where you talk about the unfortunate double chin because of the sonic unleashed soundtrack in the background, but i thought it was a song from Mei Semones debut album, Animaru, that just came out. they have the same style of sunny classical guitar jazz that SU has (minus the breakbeats but a great rhythm section nonetheless), so I recommend it highly if you like that sound too, great songs to check out is 'i can do what I want' or 'dumb feeling'

Had to come back here to say I just won tickets to see Wilco (my mom's favorite band) from an independent radio station raffle! Thank you for reminding us all how important radio is, it's definitely been a bright spot in my commutes this week 😊 can't wait to share this early 60th birthday present with her when she wakes up!
