Hey everyone! I'm busy working on a video for later this week, plus paid members will be getting an update on the next Deep Discog Dive tomorrow. But before that, I wanted ask you all - if you caught it, what did you think of Bad Bunny's halftime show at the Super Bowl?

Personally, I liked it a lot! Felt like a big party in the middle of the stadium, a celebration of community and family. The ending specifically, with Bad Bunny saying "God bless America" and then the different flags for all the countries in North America (CORRECTION: both North and South America), was pretty much perfect. I'm sure some folks will find a way to say it's trash or anti-American, but it's gonna feel like a reach. Just say you didn't understand the language and move on!!

It was definitely the highlight of the night, compared to the game (great defense by the Seahawks but the constant back-and-forth field goals for the first half made me lose steam for the second) and the commercials (notttttttt a fan of all the AI ads).

Let me know what you thought!

Excellent show! My only nitpick is that the audio seemed to cut off at the very end when I thought he was gonna do another chorus of DtMF

Dr. Katz

10/10 really felt like he was letting his culture and heritage flow through him. (Shoutout Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin)

Thought it was amazing personally. Loved how he brought all of Puerto Rico to the stage. I appreciate a lot of the smaller moments, like him waking up the kid on the chairs, since it felt so universal regardless of the culture.

Jett Roeser

The music is definitely not for me, but it was fun to watch and it meant a lot to one of my friends who's Puerto Rican.

thought it was excellent! it was by far one of the best halftime shows I've seen in a long, long time. if not maybe the best I've seen, maybe? and I'm a huge fan of the Kendrick one last year. like I'm sure you can still safely say MJ and Prince and Bruno Mars and whoever else is usually in the "greatest ever" conversation are still up there but I do think this one has to be in the conversation alongside them now. performances were great, set was incredible, setlist was excellent, guest spots were awesome, the show of unity and the "love is more powerful than hate" messaging is beautiful. highlight of the night even if I am very happy with a Seahawks win.

Aidan

he killed it! not only was a set list and stage design great, but I loved how the energy of the entire show was positive and all about community and culture rather than meeting his haters where they’re at. plus, as a Caribbean person, the ending got me so choked up when I saw my flag as he celebrated all of the Americas. love Benito so much! 🇵🇷❤️🇬🇾❤️🇺🇸❤️🌎

Leonardo dos Anjos

He did not jut list countries in North America it was about the entire continent. America, period.

Halcyon

Kinda wish he played El Club but excellent overall

I thought it was incredible- the ending portion when he plays DMtF as he walks off triumphant with “the only thing more powerful than hate is love” in the back just gave me chills. It was far better than I was expecting

enough music, chris!

It reminded me a lot of the “celebration of hip hop” halftime show with Dr Dre, Snoop, etc: a grandiose festival of culture. I hope the NFL continues to do these types of performances - they bring out the best of the event imo

Finally a daytime super bowl performance done right, it is so much energy, and even though I didn't understand almost a single word, (except the wonderful Lady Gaga upon seeing which I screamed so loud) I had such a good time jamming and vibing to the whole setlist, and the last part where he brings all the American countries together in a love is stronger than hate moment. Chef's kiss

Genuinely probably one of best halftime shows from the 2020s imo. The culture and importance oozing from this performance was really huge for the genre, and I really think it solidified Bad Bunny as one of the most important acts of our generation. The fact that he put on such a great performance a week after winning AOTY made this feel like such a victory lap! Bad Bunny really is on top of the world rn. Honestly shocked he decided to go with cuts from the latest album (VOY A LLeVARTE PA PR, EoO, etc.) rather than some of his more popular songs (Me Porto Bonito, Dakiti, Te Bote, etc.), but I respect the hell out of it because Debi Tirar Mas Fotos is an amazing record! Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin were additions (fr I NEED that Die With A Smile version studio recorded and on streaming ASAP), and the cameos from Karol G, Cardi B, Pedro Pascal, and others in the background were great inclusions! Also shoutout to the couple that actually got married during the performance! I really think this will go down as one of the most important halftime shows of all time and I'm happy I got to be part of the moment! In such a divided world (especially in regards to this performance unfortunately), he really said it best: "the only thing more powerful than hate is love."

It was very fun and I loved the energy, cinematography, symbolism, and message. The music didn’t do much for me, mostly because I’m not familiar with the songs that well and also I thought the live audio sounded a little wonky in some places. Still, Bad Bunny deserved that spot and he did a great job. Personal enjoyment wise it’d be a B tier show on a tier list for me

Bad Bunny's music isn't my thing but I was impressed all the same - you could tell there was a real vision for this halftime show. Not just a big blast on a singular stage but a whole journey with beats and moments that celebrate a culture without sanding down the more ordinary parts of it (that whole thing with the telephone polls was a very smart choice). If I had any notes... As much as I adore "Die with a Smile," Lady Gaga's performance felt a little out of place (especially given Bruno's absence), and adjusting its genre to feel more in-line with the rest of the show makes sense conceptually, but it doesn't work for that particular song IMO. It kinda felt like there was a request from the higher-ups to include the most popular English-spoken song of last year to keep anyone from losing interest in a setlist comprised entirely of songs sung in Spanish.

I really loved the way they brought Puerto Rico to life through all the slice of life moments. It made me quite misty. At the end, tho, I went full on weepy when he spoke to all of the Americas, naming the countries with the flags behind him. I found that very moving. That said, I wasn't fully delighted with the quality of the vocals. Bad Bunny sounded SO loud and plosive, especially at the beginning, and I'm used to the smoothness of his studio recordings.

Correction: not just North America, but South America. They're just as American as people in the US. Anyway, I loved it. Not quite as much as last year, as I'm not as knowledgeable on Bad Bunny's work as I am with Kendrick's, but it convinced me to check out his full albums. I even got a little teary eyed by the end. I'm not Latina, but I know for a fact that it's gonna make a lot of people in this country and beyond feel seen. And that matters way way more than making conservatives angry.

Native Honduran here, I absolutely loved the show, it made me feel extremely proud of being born and live in a Latino country Everything from the references of our culture, the symbolisms about the Latino struggle, to the big stadium music Benito is known for, sends a message to everyone that we are heard, that we are part of the biggest community in the continent, we all are Americans, we are Latinos. VIVA LATINOAMÉRICA 🇭🇳

Flyinglizrds

I’ve learned a lot about Puerto Rican history this past year for a paper, and have become very invested in them and everything that’s happened/happening to them. Seeing Benito love that island and it’s culture with his whole heart on the biggest stage possible got me really emotional. Loved the ending that really captured the group singing in DtMF :)

I loved it for pretty much every reason everyone else has stated. I just wanted to bring up a very funny point. There was a really awful half time show from Turning Point USA that was made in opposition of the Bad Bunny show. After that show, Trump launched into a Twitter tirade about how awful and disrespectful the Bad Bunny show was (in his opinion). This implies that he didn't even watch the Turning Point USA halftime show that his insane followers worked so hard to make for him. There has also been footage of Trump's Super Bowl party which had multiple TV screens showing the Bad Bunny halftime show

Duke86fan

Boomers get angry at everything whole we just have fun with a party that I know wasn't for me but everyone else had fun

Echo

I enjoyed the hell out of it, the messaging and imagery was everything

Bad Bunny was fantastic, made me proud to be a woke liberal and also made me happy on behalf of the Latino community in the US, PR, and beyond to see Latin culture celebrated in such a dark time for not only the Latino community but the arts as well. At the risk of sounding un-cultured, I do wish there were subtitles for the Spanish songs-- I feel like it would make some of the messaging hit harder for non-Spanish speakers and for those unfamiliar with BB's music (also further piss off all the conservative crybabies, because if there are subtitles, you can't complain about not understanding Spanish). I also couldn't help but remember how in 2020 Shakira and J-Lo coheadlined a heavily Latin culture-influenced halftime show (with J Balvin and BAD BUNNY) also during a Trump administration, yet it seemed like no one online was really mentioning that from what I could see in the lead-up to this show and I wonder why. I guess it really demonstrates the power of culture on politics and vice versa (or, on a more cynical note, how easily outrage is manufactured now). Would be curious to know other people's thoughts on this in particular. The amount of sportsbetting, AI, and GLP-1 ads were really stressing me out lol.

The show was good! It definitely felt like a big party! Very glad the Patriots lost. Seahawks defense was indeed dominant. We got dangerously close to the first kicker super bowl MVP. I think they should've done it. It would've been hilarious. Before the game, I put the over/under for AI ads at 11, and I believe we hit the over 🙃

I liked how in context even Die With A Smile got a political meaning. "If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you" is a great sentiment for joining a protest in solidarity.

Fantastic, probably my favorite halftime show I’ve seen live? Just a wonderful tribute to Puerto Rico and the Americas at large (and honestly a very unsubtle statement in favor of Puerto Rican independence). For all the speculation, I dare say that I think this performance was as politically bold as it realistically could have been, but honestly presented in a really smart way. The setlist was great, the set design was inventive and fun, and I actually really liked the guests! Glad that Ricky Martin showed up and killed it with his section, but it wasn’t the most shocking appearance. Lady Gaga was a shocking appearance, the salsa version of Die With A Smile was phenomenal, and I love that it played for an impromptu real wedding! Also the multiple cameos from celebrities was fun, Cardi B being a backup performer for you is an insane flex alone. I think the fact that the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation stuck with Bad Bunny all the way to this performance says a lot about his artistry, he had a vision and honesty everyone involved did an excellent job depicting it. (Also for anyone with Apple Music, the performance is on there with a pretty great Dolby mix!)

I actually *didn't* catch the halftime show *or* the game it was attached to - I've never been the biggest fan of how much attention goes to Super Bowl ad breaks, and I knew this year's ads were going to go heavy on AI (I'm a graphic designer who's been very frustrated by the rise of AI over the last few years, so having to see all those ads would've turned me into the Joker), so instead I went to see two movies in a theater - the Charli XCX concert meta-film THE MOMENT, and a 4DX screening of James Cameron's Titanic. That said, even though his music's not really for me, I'm glad a lot of folks had fun with the halftime show, and between that and the Grammy wins, Bad Bunny's having a hell of a year! Like, that's *rare* between those two events, I know there was that whole thing with The Weeknd when he did the halftime show. I feel like, given where the culture's at right now, this was a halftime show that felt like it *really needed* to happen, especially the way that it did going by the other comments - I think MJ is the only other one I could say that about, because him standing on that stage for two whole-ass minutes paved the way for all of this. I think Bad Bunny is firmly in his imperial phase as a pop artist, and he's there because he's touching on issues that I think are much more important right now than beating the ass of a Degrassi actor in a rap battle (not that that isn't important in and of itself - that particular Degrassi actor had it coming tbh, that wasn't just A Minor thing). I would also like to congratulate the actual couple that got *actually married* at that show, and it leads me to a crazy prediction I have for next year's halftime show: it'll be Taylor, and she and Travis tie the knot on-stage.

JRD

I watched the halftime show after it aired on YouTube. I think he did a great job. It was fun and he looked like he was having a blast while doing it. It’s what we all needed right now.

Rodney

Loved it.
