Hey all you fine people! This new video is a doozy - it's about the 1989 murder of Kevin Hughes, a music chart director in Nashville. Beneath this tragedy is a wild story about music charts, payola, and how some would rather kill than allow systems of power to change.

I've been dying to tell this story for a bit now, and I hope you enjoy it. As always, you can catch it on here and Nebula now, and on YT tomorrow.

Also, a HUGE thanks to Keith Sharon for coming on! His Murder on Music Row podcast is simply incredible, and if you enjoyed this video, I highly recommend the first season on Kevin Hughes as well as the second season. I've linked both below.

i don't think it's ethical to comment "first" on a patreon post - really interesting video! as somebody who makes music + is trying to get into the industry, it's funny to see how "payola" has been adapted into "subscription services" for promotion. there are plenty of outlets for indie musicians to submit their music to certain blogs or sites for a higher chance of review + promotion -- there are even people who are willing to try to get you into big-wig music mags like pitchfork or rolling stone for hundreds of thousands of dollars. it's dog-shoot-dog out there.

Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I think opening a video with gunshots and zero warning is a little badly thought out. I think that warrants a content warning somewhere (or removal)

True The Crime Fr tho, very interesting video! Really enjoyed learning about this crazy story!

Great video! Honestly whenever I think of payola, it gives me a weird feeling because of how we perceive "hits" in terms of how manufactured or organic they can be. Doesn't deter me from enjoying music, but does give me a odd feeling that I don't know how to describe. I like how you recontextualised payola in within the modern day. That offers an interesting thought given how democratised music has become for the most independent of independent artists. Thx again Mr T Snare 🖤

I lived in Nashville for years and this is the first I’m hearing of this! Wild. Thanks for another great one!
