Happy Friday folks!! Hope you're all doing well. I'm gearing up for a very busy weekend here - not only do I have a gig next week, but I'm also starting to edit the next DDD. Will I see the outside world anytime next week? Debatable! Is it be worth it? I hope so!

But before I get deep in the weeds, I wanted to ask you all - what's your favorite song/album of 2026 so far?

We're nearly a quarter through 2026, and I'd say it's been a solid year for music up to this point. If you're curious, my current AOTY frontrunners would be either Ratboys' Singing To An Empty Chair or underscores' U.

I won't be making a full-on video for this one, but once enough people respond, I'll make a playlist for us all to check out with everyone's recommendations.

Thanks y'all, have a good weekend!

UPDATE 3/28: Shoutout to everyone who left their picks! I've made a playlist below - this was last updated at 10:30am on the 28th, and I'll add any additional recs that come up in the comments.

Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1UzlqcqZq2BDG8aALij7B0?si=a14ba47265e74f17

And if you wanna transfer this playlist to your preferred streaming service, I highly recommend Soundiiz: https://soundiiz.com/

enough music, chris!

Joyce Manor’s “I Used To Go To This Bar” is their best record in years - the best of everything they’ve done up until this point lyrically and musically. “Falling Into It” is an all-timer of a track.

Izzy Ferrari

Dancing on the wall by MUNA. I really clicked with this single and I’m really excited for there next project

Noah Jay

I think it comes down to 3 for me: My Ghosts Go Ghost by By Storm (fka Injury Reserve) U by underscores To Whom This May Concern by Jill Scott I think right now I’d have to go with the Jill Scott album, it feels so rare to get an album this quality from a legend this deep into her career. Especially when said album can easily be considered one of the stronger neo-soul albums in several years.

Alyssa Jade

Ode To The Greyhouse by Edgehill. Alt rock/indie band from Nashville that I’ve been following for a few years. They just released their debut album in Feb! They’ve got some great stuff to check out.

Bob Nick

For me it had to be the debut ep from the Glasgow Band Grow Up ‘All Inclusive’ which came out yesterday. Such a good listen from front to back, they were amazing when they opened for a show I organised myself last week and I’ll be seeing them tomorrow night for the launch show, check them out: https://album.link/i/1885699215

Garrett Auld

I know it literally came out yesterday but Days We Left Behind by Paul McCartney is a gorgeous song.

Kyle Cahill

Blown away every time I listen to the new By Storm (FKA Injury Reserve) album My Ghosts Go Ghost. A stunning album about overcoming the horrors of your past and learning to move on after devastating loss well also being matched with some of the most creative and boundary pushing production. We have seen this decade so far.

David Dalby

Haute & Freddy are pretty great. And it's wonderful to see McLusky back and swinging. The Dream Eaters continue to filthily rock too.

ian crowley

My current AOTY is the new Converge album. They sound absolutely dialed in on this new album. Also loving the James Blake, Lamb of God and Haute & Freddy albums too!

vvsvlogs

It also has to be U I fear. Just an incredible album

Shayne Pepper

I'm really loving the new albums from Voxtrot, The Format, and Richard Edwards (of Margot and the Nuclear So and So's). The early 2000s indie pop blogosphere has returned with a vengeance in 2026, and I'm here for it.

Will

For sure U by underscores, I try picking a favourite but it changes from day to day, the hemlocke springs is also great along with my new band believe's singles

Adam Stutsman

For me, it’s The Mountain for sure. It swept me away completely, surpassing my expectations and surprising me with how tranquil yet melancholy I felt afterward. Truly remarkable. Not something I’ll be able to revisit often, but rather savor when I do.

David Claiborne

New Converge album and new Neurosis album are my top 2 so far

Charlie Latino

The only new songs I can remember so far are I Just Might by Bruno Mars and Stateside by PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I’m betting all my money on The Mountain by Gorillaz being a top 10 album.

Hunter Hurt

The Peace from underscores new album U. Giving such party4u vibes

Rudi

Ohhhh if had to pick one song this year so far... this requires some context. Hololive VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei (before anyone says or thinks it, yes the one from Fortnite) made a huge announcement on the 22nd: the virtual Youtuber and musician is starting up her own semi-independent agency to handle the music side of her career, marking a step away from the company Hololive, which she has both streamed and put music out under up to this point. For those not familiar, Hololive is like if a YouTube MCN and an idol agency were combined into one company: talents who work for them have to give some amount of creative control and copyright on their works and their virtual anime likeness, but in exchange get access to lots of resources to succeed. Up until this point, Suisei has has a very successful career under Hololive, but it's clear with the move to branch out from Hololive musically that she has bigger music ambitions that she wants control over, which is really exciting! Hololive has a small investment in that new agency, but this still marks what could genuinely be a dramatic shift in how creators in this space handle their careers (exempting rare cases of VTubers being signed to music labels before this, for example Hololive English Talent Mori Calliope being signed to Universal Music). With this announcement came the release of the single Prima Donna: this is some of the most fine tuned, laser precision level Jpop I've heard in a long time, with gorgeous production and lyrics that might mark the first time I've seen a vtuber release an "I'm back bitch" single in it's proper form? The music video for this song is gorgeous, with some of the best 2D animation I've seen in a music video in a long time. This song, and career move, clearly marks what hopefully is not only a new era for Suisei herself, but for the medium of VTubing as a whole, where talents get to have more control over what they make.

Mark Lombard

been loving EXPO by Ulrika Spacek and Blame the Clown by Twisted Teens. The latter is really crunchy tape recorded folk punk that's very in line with Parquet Courts early stuff, except there's great pedal steel and synth touches for wonderful effect. Check out Not Real or Little Seed if you're curious! P.S. the pedal steel on the chorus of Not Real reminds me of Go Outside by Ratboys!

Leendert van der Plas

This year, I've decided to keep up a lot more with music and seek out a lot of new music. In that effort, I've decided to make a top 5 of my favorite new songs each week and so far I've been managing to create one still. Thus, i pronounce "IN THE NAME FOR YOUR LOVE" by Telenova the best song of the first quarter of 2026. Best album so far is either Zagate by Souad Massi or Until You're Satisfied by YONAKA

Joannasaurus rex

The Apple Tree Under the Sea by Hemlocke Springs!!

TheEggMcWaffle

I know it just came out today as of writing this, but the new Slayyyter album WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA absolutely floored me. I had loved all of the singles she had released prior, especially DANCE, and the full record lived up to the insane amounts of hype I had. With the cataclysmic state the world is in right now, I really needed a fun, raunchy, dance-pop album to make me forget about it all for an hour and this album does that for me

Oisín Quinn

Some that haven’t been mentioned so far: • Marty Supreme’s soundtrack by Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never. I haven’t listened to much OPN recently but I thought this soundtrack was phenomenal, I think Endo’s Game is my most listened to track from it • The new Bladee tracks are phenomenal. Eyelash in particular is so so so good • I liked Mandy, Indiana new album quite a bit. Sicko featuring Billy Woods is an obvious highlight from it!

James Rackham

The best things this year for me have been from outside of my usual listening areas most notably the Dry Cleaning album Secret Love (the track Cruise Ship Designer is on repeat now) and the Femtanyl album Man Bites Dog. Usually I listen to rock and metal but very little good has come from either yet (although the new Pretty Reckless single is good so I am looking forward to that album)

Tom Randal

Album, I’m gonna go with The Mountain by Gorillaz (at least for now; I haven’t heard Mutiny After Midnight yet, and I’m also excited for what Madonna and Paul McCartney have in store this year). Song . . . I’m gonna throw an absolute curveball and say “The One Who’s Running The Show” from episode 8 of The Amazing Digital Circus. Best song I’ve heard all year from a sentient AI who’s just gone entirely the fuck insane.

Kiro

The new Gorillaz album is fantastic. All of the songs have grown on me immensely (especially Orange County). Considering we got a lot of my fave songs off the album in 2025 (Damascus!!), I'll have to pick Delirium and The Moon Cave from that record :) I also really like the new McCartney track, and "Trouble" by Grace Ives. Also, shoutout to my friend Watchdog Therapies --- his new song There Is No Hope For You RULES.

Jane Doe

Distressingly, this poll made me look back through my spotify and realise I've only heard one album from this year (I've been listening to a lot of old stuff it seems). That album is Converge's new one but thankfully that album is unsurprisingly fantastic

Rodney

Most of what I have been listening to so far were things I found from best of 25 lists… but from this year I have been surprised and enjoying the “Wuthering Heights” soundtrack from Charli XCX

Kamina in a Kamui

I honestly haven’t had any music that stuck with me super hard from this year; I wasn't as over-the-moon for the Mountain like a lot of other people, I was really disappointed by the new Bruno Mars, and my favorite records this year I've barely spun after the first week hype. AOTY frontrunner is probably Ca$ino by Baby Keem, and song of the year is Stay Here 4 Life from the new A$AP Rocky. That Brent Faiyaz feature is amazing.

Halcyon

This year hasn’t been that special for me overall, possibly because I’m devoting most of my listening to catching up on the classics I’ve missed. My favorite song of the year so far is “black cloud” by ERRA, and my favorite albums are If You Go There I Hope You Find It by The Paper Kites, IN VERSES by Karnivool, and also U by underscores.

Duke86fan

Really liked the Mandy Indiana album, heavy noise that's experimental and fun and makes a good statement, I'm mostly excited for the new broken social scene and Friko albums Also sucks you aren't in Massachusetts anymore because the green River festival with spoon headlining seems perfect for you

DeclanBlueSSD

Runner-ups for me are underscores' U, Slayyyter's WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, and By Storm's My Ghosts Go Ghost, but my favourite above all of those is an obscure plunderphonics album named VANITY RENEGADE by DARK DESIRE. Some of the most creative, hectic, and euphoric sample chops & beats I have ever heard.

KStebbs

I’d say my favorite song so far this year is definitely Dancing On The Wall by Muna. I really grew to love their self titled album and I’ve found they’ve always been so consistent with the quality of their music. Dancing On The Wall continues that trend. It’s an excellent pop song to listen to when you need a boost, which is a relief because not a whole lot of pop music moved me last year. I’m really looking forward to their album release in May, because with Dancing On The Wall (and So What) being so good I’m optimistic that that it’s going to be a great summer album.

MrSwift__

I Just Might by Bruno Mars has grew on me even if the rest of the album is just ok to me I’ve also been enjoying J Cole’s releases this year(the mixtape and the Fall Off) and Don’t be Dumb by A$AP Rocky

Zamboni Jones

Silence Outlives the Earth by ERRA, and if I had to choose a song it'd be Black Clouds

Chris Kilbourn

Maybe it's recency bias, but the new James Blake might be my AOTY frontrunner atm. It felt underwhelming at first, but with repeat listens I find the whole thing to be front to back ear candy. The Monica Martin feature has lived in my head for like a week now

vdal

Definitely hemlocke springs "the apple tree under the sea" ! It has such an eclectic and colorful album i love sm, every song has such a unique charm to it and im so happy to see how far she's come as an artists since going viral from girlfriend

Christian Samples

My favorite album of the year: Raye’s “THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.” What a brilliantly executed concept album about a woman who has broken down and picked up the pieces. My favorite song of the year: “Homewrecker” by Sombr. What a fantastic groove. What heartfelt lyrics. What a vocal performance. What drumwork. This kid is truly ready to sit amongst the big leagues.

Muse of Salzburg

Yeah U by Underscores is probably my favourite album, but my favourite song is probably Moon Cave from The Mountain, crazy production and guest verses

General Nuisance

$T LOSER by Slayyyyter, Pop Sound by Kim Petras, and The Peace by Underscores have all really impressed me so far with both how incredibly emotive the vocals and production on them are.

Dr. Katz

My top 5 albums of the year so far are: 1. WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA — Slayyyter. Such a fun dance-pop/EDM album that takes heavy inspiration from PC Music and Justice to craft songs that will blow you away. 2. The Mountain — Gorillaz. Gorillaz always hit best when they seem to have a concept to their music and The Mountain might be their best conceptually. The themes about love and loss really hit me hard with some of the best features in Gorillaz discography. 3. My Ghosts Go Ghost — By Storm. The return of Injury Reserve under a new name after five years. If By The Time I Get To Phoenix was them processing their grief in real time, My Ghosts Go Ghost is them taking a look back 5 years later and reexamining their grief and loss. For as much as you think you’ve moved on, you haven’t. 4. So Much Country 'Till We Get There — Westside Country. A fun short little 15 minute EP with some of the most infectiously cute songs ever. The guitar solo on Don’t Throw Rocks might be my favorite moment of music so far this year. 5. U — underscores. The culmination of everything underscores has done up to this point. While previous albums had standout moments, this one brings the hits from start to finish with the sense that April has truly come into her own not just as a musician but a true multitalented artist.

Matt

My fav album so far this year is Apink's RE: LOVE. Apink are the most consistently good Kpop group ever imho. As for fav song, it's either Bittersweet by Baby DONT Cry or Sticker by Yena. (I honestly recommend both albums those songs are on as well.)

Bettina Barbiah

It’s only March but I’d say Undercores has the best album of the year so far

Rita L

I don’t listen to a lot of new music but I am trying to be better at that. So far, I am loving the releases this year by MXKA - La Vuelta and ¿Cómo Te Va?. I really hope she keeps up with this style of doing Corridos tumbados with R&B flavor - the music sounds ethereal.

Diego Pena

For me it’s U by underscores, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA by Slayyyter, Girlfriend by Grace Ives & My Ghosts Go Ghost by By Storm. Some songs I’m also enjoying are Dying for You by Charli xcx, I’ll Change for You by Mitski, RiKOPAPi by maaarco & YASPG, and PLAY ME by Kim Gordon.

DYLBABY

The Pleasure is Yours by GENA is an amazing, unique soul album that is my AOTY so far.

Henry.Main

To B Honest by Jill Scott & JID is my recommendation- the whole song is great but especially JID's verse, it might be my favorite performance by him on any song, it feels like he got possessed by Andre 3000 or something

Cyber Smoker

I'm quite late to this but I'd like to shout out some songs that weren't mentioned yet (sorry if most of it comes from the depths of RYM): - Love Is a State by Bladee - if i was to have a wedding (slim chances) this would be on the setlist, EASY - Do It (Yves Remix) by underscores - I know that U is getting more attention now (and rightfully so) but mentally I'm still here... - Limn by Isobel - we have to support the youngest Björk daughter at all costs - Ayaba oxum by Antropoceno - it just OOZES atmosphere - Blighted Deity by Exxûl - my favorite metal song ^^ - Talk to Me by Robyn - releasing on the same day as Slayyyer might've buried her album a bit but we shouldn't sleep on it, this song in particular could be one of her best ones ever - Man Bites Dog by Femtanyl - essentially this year's "Revengeseekerz", just a headbanger of an album, special shout out to "Head Up" - Anata by Joshua Chuquimia Crampton - not on Spotify but it is my current AOTY so I have to mention it, especially the amazing riff on "Taqini (Juntxs)"

jenny marion

i need to listen to more new stuff from this year but i have been really enjoying xaviersobased's major label debut "xavier". usually get a little worried with artists known for their experimentation going major but he has stuck to his guns really well. "tony hawk" is one of the best beats i've ever heard
