What's up everything! It continues to be a scorcher here on the east coast - I hope you're all staying cool. In fact, why not cool off with a brand new main channel video? Videos can cool you down right?

This one came together all of a sudden - more and more stories are coming about AI-generated songs openly pulling from existing artists. Diving into it made me realize how complicated the ongoing lawsuits against Suno and Udio are, and how the same laws that allow me to exist may let them get away with it.

As usual, you can catch this video on YT tomorrow. Enjoy!!

AI has gone too far…. it hurt Michael T Snare’s feelings!

Don’t worry, Michael. I’d steal your videos if I were training an AI model. ❤️

In all seriousness though, I see what you mean about the double-edged nature of fair use. Back in college, I was EXTREMELY into mash-ups (Girl Talk, Super Mash Bros. and the like) and I loved the idea of people taking popular songs and making something new out of them for me to download via a mediafire link. I didn’t think Jay-Z needed my money when I wasn’t even listening to it for his music anyway. But with AI, it feels different; it’s not grassroots musicians with a punk ethos mashing songs together for a lo-fi dance party effect, it’s a bunch of talentless rich tech bros sucking money/work out of people who already aren’t making money from their art. The videos YOU make are educational, entertaining, and you’re on the “same side” as the artists, which makes it a totally positive-feeling way to utilize fair use. The nuance is in the intention, and the intention of AI is rotten and greedy.

As an independent musician myself, seeing the complete disregard for any respect towards my peers from these companies and it's users sicken me. That story of the folk artist just doesn't feel like it should be a real thing that happened. Generative AI always has and will be disgusting and I wish it was never invented.
