Hey magnificent people! I'm currently deep into editing the next DDD, but I took a break earlier today to listen to two of the most anticipated albums of the year - Charli XCX's Music Fashion & Film, and the Strokes' Reality Awaits.

Personally, I like them both on first listen but they're 100% albums that I'll need to sit with longer. The autotune on the Strokes songs doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, and it kinda fits with the deeper push into new-wave. Plus, Dine N Dash is outstanding. And for Charli, I was surprised by how focused on death it was. (I guess not a huge surprise given SS26, but still.) I had to sit with the last song with Cronenberg for a bit, really affecting stuff.

But anyway, I wanted to ask you - if you've listened to either or both albums, what did you think? This isn't for a video or anything, I'm just curious.

Enjoy your weekend everybody!

I was really let down by the new Charli album, it felt very rough draft, and rushed. Feels like the reverse of Ratitude by Weezer in a lot of ways. Haven’t listened to The Strokes album yet, but judging by the fact that there is autotune on every song it’s also going to be a disappointment for me.

I loved the new Charli XcX album and the strokes album played in my ears for 45 minutes

I’m biased bc I was literally at the strokes concert when it dropped and got to hear Dine N Dash live, but I really loved Reality Awaits. It feels like even if the autotune doesn’t 100% land for me, it’s Julian playing with his voice like you’d distort an instrument, it’s measured and chosen which I like. It’s like New Abnormals dark evil cousin j really liked it

both were good but nothing special. the first three tracks on charli’s album are laughably bad to me but then it becomes a bit better. i wish the songs were a bit more fleshed out though. it almost comes across as a mood board. i really quite like the sound on the strokes album, especially the autotune (don’t kill me), but the lyrics are subpar.

I just finished Reality Awaits, but the autotune does turn me off a lot. Dine N’Dash was a standout for me too though and I also thought Lonely in the Future was catchy and well written, so that’s the only one where the tuning didn’t bother me because it had a lot else going for it.

The strokes album suprised me i was expecting a disaster from the single but i was pleasantly suprised, i definitely think its an album that will grow for me with each listen. Also i just saw them preform at red rocks and they killed it incredible show i liked going shopping way more live than the recorded version

Honestly I’m not sure how I feel about either. Charli has said that her record was essentially a quick burst of inspiration that she needed to get out into the world before it disappeared, and I’m not particularly surprised to hear of the quick turnaround. Besides “Magic Metal Montana” and the singles, nothing stands out to me that much, but I feel like it will grow on me with time in part because all the singles were that way for me. As for The Strokes album, I feel like it will do the exact opposite. I thought it was great while I was listening but I already can’t remember pretty much anything aside from “Falling Out of Love” (which is fantastic, don’t @ me). Though, everything else they’ve done besides The New Abnormal has taken me some time to really vibe with, so maybe this will be the same.

I really enjoyed both of them. As a massive Charli fan, I’ve been following this era closely and knew what to expect, more or less, and was not disappointed at all! The new sound is a lot of fun, except when it’s dirge-like and depressing, which is also great! I love how plainly she’s expressing herself lately. People often use the term “diaristic” to describe people like Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo, but those artists still write lyrics in a more flowery, poetry vein(which is also great), where as this actually feels like inner thoughts and passages taken directly from a diary. I love how existential and pondering it is. There aren’t clear answers and that messiness is also expressed in the music and the jarring song lengths, etc. I love it. I also really enjoyed the Strokes album. I haven’t spent a ton of time with their recent work, but this definitely inspired me to do a whole discography dive. I love the, again, plain spoken lyrics and kind of “inner pondering” nature of the songs. The musical palette is much more gothy and post punk than what I expect from The Strokes(based mostly on the sound of the first three albums). Overall, really pleasantly surprised and inspired to become a bigger Strokes fan all around.

The vocals are really holding the FFM back

I was hoping you would talk about the new Charli album. I loved it. So much.

I haven't fully listened to Reality Awaits yet, and I will eventually, but the first two songs they released early, Falling Out Of Love and Going Shopping, did not impress me at all. I did not like the auto tune. Based on those two songs alone, I can't imagine this is going to be anything other than a big step down from The New Abnormal, which is, in my opinion, their best album.

Kamina in a Kamui

I gave Reality Awaits two listens so far, and I enjoyed it a lot more on second listen. The autotune is gonna take a lot of getting used to, but I enjoy the Strokes as a band enough to beat myself into liking it eventually. Going to Babble On and The Fruits of Conquest are my immediate highlights, though I also found myself enjoying the singles more now than when I first heard them. Falling out of Love especially, I did not care for it on first listen but its really grown on me within the context of the rest of the album, and I hope my love for it only continues to grow. That said, I know a lot of music nerd circles are bemoaning the record and calling it the band's weakest. As a Comedown Machine defender, that makes my job so much easier and I will happily watch that become the general consensus.

I think i like the consistency of Charli’s Album, really love the concept and the film world crossover. However most of the songs are just too short and i guess didn’t stand out on its own very much (or not very catchy, maybe i need more listen). GIVE US 30 SECONDS MORE on each song Choli!

Just was reminded to listen to the new Strokes album by this post and there's some standouts, but unfortunately didn't leave much of an impression overall.

Reality Awaits was really rough ngl. I think the band showed flashes of cool stuff but at times they sounded either completely lethargic or on auto pilot. Then the elephant in the room with Julian, what a mess! Genuinely just sounded like he stumbled into the studio with nothing ready and just rambled on with a garbage filter over his voice. Felt like they took all the wrong lessons from The New Abnormal

enough music, chris!

The new Strokes made me realize Comedown Machine wasn’t an anomaly, it was a warning

Vincent Mashups

If BRAT was Charli’s “Discovery” by Daft Punk, MFF was her “Human After All”. An album that strips down and gets weird after a huge and successful breakout album.

the new charli xcx album reminds me a lot of the band courting (i mean this in the best way possible i think courting are one of the most underrated bands out there rn)

JeremiahMusician

I've not listened to either of them, but with Charli, my brother said it kinda sounded like if The Velvet Underground circa 1968 tried to make Brat. I know that probably doesn't make sense, but maybe it does.

Just finished listening to both Music, Fashion, Film is a very interesting album conceptually with shockingly subpar execution. Charli has a lot to say while also communicating very little, and it feels more like a cry for help than a fully realized artistic vision. I still enjoyed it, but I don’t think I’ll come back to it. Reality Awaits filled me with rage in a way I didn’t expect. I think having the Genius lyrics out was a mistake as it detailed every minor way Julian was whining about his divorce, how he views other artists, politics, AI, and himself. His delivery is all over the place and humorous in how often he mumbles and over-enunciates, the autotune sounds terrible, and many of the songs feature the band on autopilot for a majority of it. I listened in the highest quality available (over CD quality) and it felt like band was laughing at me because it revealed no sonic details outside of the same bass and guitar lines being repeated over and over and over again. I thought MFF was decent, and I never wanna hear Reality Awaits again 😊

Just finished listening to Charlie's album, i love how blown out and distorted some of the songs were, while still maintaining a sweetness to it. Also the attention to death is cool, because even though it's morbid it's true that even though there was brat summer, charli will die and be forgotten about eventually lol

Ok so I just finished listening to them: For the strokes, I would say its a natural evolution to what Julian and co were doing with the Voidz and with The New Abnormal. It feels a bit loose and aimless, like Julian's just rehashing the same things again and just going by the motions, the auto tune stich felt overplayed yes but also charming, there are plenty highlights here for me like Dine N'Dash, Lonely in the Future but as a whole not my favorite record from them, maybe it will grow on me in the future but idk. Now, about charli. I loved this album. Reminds me a lot to How I'm Feeling Now as an album born out of spontaneity and chance, a reaction to brat and every thing that came with it, for better and worse. It shows a lot of her fears and anxieties over her career, her age, relevance, vices, all juxtaposed by the production and writing, ala being repetitive, vapid and laid back by design. The lenght is such an non issue to me as I feel like every song gives just enough to leave you wanting more without overstaying it's welcome. And the ending gave me goosebumps in the best way possible. (can u tell i care more about one album than the other?) Two different albums that serve different purposes, Charli's is a way to express herself and Julian's is a way to reinforce himself. Obviously I liked one more than the other but tbh I feel like people are being too harsh on the strokes but maybe im just too on the outside to form a concrete opinion on them beyond The New Abnormal and this new record. Anyways stream Camera for clear skin.

just finished both albums!! i kept my expectations pretty low for both albums so i think i ended up enjoying them way more than other people seem to have. MFF felt like a lot of songs could have been pushed a bit further and that something was missing on a lot of tracks but i really resonated with “Persona” and the closer and overall its a fun album, I just wish it had a bit more going on. For Reality Awaits I feel like I have to go back and listen again with the lyrics but I did enjoy the first listen. For some reason it reminded me of a much brighter Strokes version of “Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino” by Arctic Monkeys and i can’t tell if it’s in a good or bad way yet. I didn’t mind the autotune and it honestly added something to the listening experience for me but it DID make me realize how simplistic the band was behind it. It was a really engaging listen for me with a few standout songs while the rest kind of blurred nicely, but it wasn’t super standout even if the performances and style was unique in their catalog. interesting listens though at least
