A couple flashback pictures of Kaz, the first in high school, age 16-17, and the second with his friend Kira (you might remember her as his gaming buddy in chapter 5) at age 20, when she cuts his hair. The second image is shortly before he leaves Akron for Starlight City.

Both the guys will have a couple flashback chapters in the main comic. Kaz's flashbacks talk about his religious upbringing and how he eventually grew away from that, his friendship and falling out with Eric, and moving from the suburbs to downtown Akron before he left Ohio altogether.

I'm debating how I want to depict Alex in his flashback chapters. I hate that a lot of cis people who make media about transgender people love to show us as a before and after, not realizing that who we "were" is not something we often want to relive.  Because the comic is narrated by Kaz, Alex's story will be told to him, so I think it could be an interesting way for Alex to control the narrative, i.e. what he chooses to share or not share. I know for certain that I don't want to share his deadname. Alex is Alex.I'm going to start sketching ideas for the short comic about Kaz when he first moved to Starlight City. I'm excited to share those when they're ready! More soon.

It’s interesting to hear/see other perspectives on trans stories. I didn’t change my name so I don’t have a deadname. I don’t feel any discomfort thinking about my youth or years pre transition. I’ve always just been me no matter how I identified. I’m excited to see how Alex’s story unfolds!
