What I want people to realize is this is 1997 & it’s ads all over the WCW ring “Slim Jim” at that , that’s why WWE having ads in the ring don’t bother me I’ve seen people say they didn’t even realize the ads on the mat during this match lol

Here are some Fun Facts about Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero Halloween Havoc 1997. It was voted the best match of that year. It was a Title vs. Mask match. Eddie Guerrero's WCW Cruiserweight Championship was on the line, while Rey Mysterio's legendary mask was at stake. Rey had never lost a mask match before this. Mike Tenay pointed out during commentary that Rey had already competed in eight matches where his mask was on the line and won all eight. Eddie actually tore Rey's mask during the match, briefly exposing part of Rey's face. At the time, seeing Rey's face was extremely rare. The match was only about 13 minutes and 51 seconds long. Despite its relatively short runtime, it became one of WCW's most celebrated matches. Rey originally believed he was going to lose his mask. According to Rey, WCW had been unmasking luchadores one by one, and he believed he was next. Eric Bischoff even warned him that not showing up would put him in breach of contract. The finish was changed shortly before the match. Rey said that only about 20 minutes before they went out, Arn Anderson told them the finish had been changed and Rey was now going over. Eddie supported Rey backstage. Rey recalled Eddie telling him that if Rey didn't want to do the match with his mask at stake, they didn't have to go through with it. Eddie was actually supposed to win at one point. The original plan was for Guerrero to defeat Rey and unmask him, making the eventual title change an unexpected last-minute decision. Rey had already beaten Eddie twice before Halloween Havoc, which helped build the story toward their PPV encounter. The mask wasn't just a gimmick. WCW emphasized that Rey's mask had been passed down to him through his uncle, giving the stipulation much greater significance within lucha libre tradition. Mike Tenay brought up Eddie's own complicated history with masks. During commentary, Tenay noted that Eddie had previously wrestled as Máscara Mágica and had voluntarily unmasked, contrasting Eddie's attitude toward masks with Rey's.

And while I absolutely love watching heel Eddie, 1997–98 was definitely him in his prime, before the car crash. Much like Shawn Michaels, Eddie had his own struggles afterward that forced him to change up his style a bit. I really hope you can react to segments that showcase Eddie Guerrero’s character, because just like Shawn, Eddie was more than just an incredible wrestler. he was an amazing character who influenced people for years and is still imitated to this day. His whole “Lie, Cheat, and Steal” persona was so entertaining, especially seeing all the crazy antics he would pull off. If you ever do Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar at No Way Out, please react to the promo Eddie cuts on Brock beforehand. It’s widely considered one of the greatest promos of his career because of how real, emotional, and personal Eddie gets. It really shows just how incredible he was beyond the wrestling itself.

I actually hadn't really remembered that until we watched this match. It is CRAZY the amount of ads WCW worked into the ring and ringposts in the same year WWF introduced the first Titantron

Like with HBK, I definitely want to go deeper into Eddie Guerrero's character down the line. I think introducing Angela to him via the Rey matches is a great way to get her interest starting, and then we can go Lie, Cheat, Steal Eddie (a version that I myself never experienced in real time since my wrestling fandom dropped basically around the time that The Radicalz moved to WWF).

If/when you go through Eddie's WWE title run, make sure to include his "Addict" promo with Brock (the complete version with Mariachi Brock if you can find it). Brock struggled to stay in character during it and the first thing he did when they got to the back was hug Eddie.
