This is a question that came up on last week's pod. We're gonna discuss the answers on this week's episode, and maybe even do a Reaction Video featuring some of the verses

berto

kendrick made you think about it but he is not your savior

SWORDAD

JID verse on Home Remix was the ultimate confirmation of him snatching the crown next..

Kheg `

Trippie Redd - Can You Rap Like Me? This isnt necessarily a verse but a whole song that changed my perspective on Trippie Redd. He proves in this song that he can actually rap but just chooses not to. Knowing his true potential is slightly disappointing but I like some of his music still nonetheless.

SWORDAD

Joeybadass on Redbull spiral freestyle too… he was never a bars type of rapper imo, to the point where I was thinking maybe someone wrote it for him.

P-Money

Weird answer but Benny the Butcher's first verse on Big Dogs (that I heard via the VibeVilla review!) is what got me hooked on his style. I'd never checked out his early Griselda stuff before that so that verse put me on!

Dion Byrne

Most of Eminem's in the last 10 years but the Trump freestyle was genuinely one of the worst things I've ever heard. The guy went from a 10 year elite catalog starting from Infinite to 10+ years of mediocre and terrible bars.

Swocky

Kendrick's verse on Mona Lisa, that was like my first time hearing anything from him besides HUMBLE and Alright on the radio.

Broken Toaster

The verse that truly made me a die hard fan for Kendrick was his last verse on the BDKMV (Remix) Ft. Jay Z, after that verse I just knew he was one of the biggest fish out there in rap

Rob Himself

Eastern Parkway- Jack Harlow JID- Kody Blu 31 Mick Jenkins- C is for Cash Money DUCKWRTH- KING KING Kendrick Lamar- For Free (Interlude) Sacrifices- Johnny Venus from EARTHGANG

Rob Himself

I could go forever ian gon lie lmao

Eli

Jay electronica + Hov Shiny Suit Theory

Cooka

Second verse of the song The Black Bond by Nas

Josh Hart

Benny's feature on S.E. Gang (showed me he could compete with and outrap conway) Em verse 1 on Renegade (still the greatest feature ever, washing jay-z is huge for his GOAT case) Rome Streetz on Rooftop Sermons (first time ive heard someone outrap ransom, really showed me that he was here to stay)

Eli

Kendrick Black Friday

A_RD

TDE punch on untitled 05

Christian Sandoval

Saba sacrifices dreamville colab man his verse is insane such an underrated artist and rapper

Kage Bullock

I always liked Smino’s music but his verse on HOP OUT CHO FEELINS made me really tap in. he’s top 2 not 2

Rob Himself

Definitely Earl on his infamous self titled mixtape that WHOLE project just so many inklings of Earl full potential as far as wordplay and his controversial punches

Gaurav U

I remember I didn’t take Childish Gambino seriously as a rapper until I heard the final verse on Telegraph Ave (1:50) Also, I liked Denzel Curry but didn’t realize he could hang with someone like JID bar for bar until I heard him on Bruuuh. JID set the bar insanely high and somehow Denzel took it higher

Marquis

Mavi - Time Travel The whole song put me on to Mavi and give him the respect he demands Dope bars but the passion in his voice the whole track was crazy The first 1:30 of the track alone made me a locked in Mavi Fan

PraetorRogue

There's two for me that stand out. First was Lloyd Banks' first verse on Falsified. He came in and hit that flow and rhyme scheme so nicely, I immediately restarted the song. I'd never paid a huge amount of attention to Banks prior to that, but now, every time he drops something I am there straight away. The second was Lupe Fiasco's first verse on ON FAUX NEM. The verse is literally one line, but it felt so powerful. I've always respected Lupe as a rapper, but that whole album made me re-evaluate my image of him, and that song in particular was like magic.

Ken

Yachty verse on Chance the Rapper - Mixtape ft him and Thug lol I thought he was so trash and for some reason that verse made me start giving him a more honest ear.

Ryan Higgins

Nas, I Gave You Power The Roots, Concerto of the Desperado Jadakiss, Problem Child

PraetorRogue

That Denzel verse is straight fire, whole song is a banger

taiyo

kind of a cheat, but Chance on "Ultralight Beam." he was a favorite of mine from 10 Day and Acid Rap, but he genuinely broke into best-pen-and-intention tier for me from that. it seemed like the moment he was made to rap for. (Edit: doing that as the opening track on a comeback album from one of the goats really contextualizes this sentiment.)

Ron H

wasn’t a Freddie Gibbs fan til I heard his verse on Location Remote on that Fetti collab with Curren$y, changed everything for me

Gaurav U

Rick Ross on Devil In a New Dress

Gaurav U

Was also thinking this one, my fave on the track among a bunch of standouts

Night Market

Gunna's second verse on 'turned your back'. Was never really a fan of Gunna because he was too similar to Thug and Lil Baby to me, who I'm not fans of either. When Gunna dropped a Gift & a Curse, the whole album, and this song in particular, made me a fan. It showed another side of Gunna that was different and felt authentic, maybe because his life outside of the music today reflects that as well, but the lines hit harder and feel more relatable compared to when his peers make songs of the same vein, which usually sound very generic and fall flat.

Sacrifices is a VV classic. Whenever I hear it, I remember Darae saying “I listen to that song …. …. A lot”

James

J Cole’s 2nd verse on Trae the Truth in Ibiza is the most honest definition of artistry I’ve heard on a song

enzo

Lupe’s first verse from “ON FAUX NEM” IYKYK. That project made me go through all his previous projects

Patz

Vast Aire's verse on "Iron Galaxy" by Cannibal Ox is one of the greatest verses ever penned. Every single bar. Took hip-hop from a vibe to an artform for me.

Alex

Honestly like not necessarily a verse but the song “changes” from XXX Always had a different portrayal of him through media and headline but this song changed how I view him

Ezra

Dude this Mavi project is so underrated and honestly my favorite of his I constantly return to this song especially🙏🏽

JP

Kendrick - Black Friday Gotta revisit that one.

PRO

Big Sean’s verse on “deep reverence” with nip made me a fan of him and the second verse of “get an idea” by Kenny mason opened me up to what kind of potential he has as an artist

FigLeaf Bicarbonate

Cartoon and cereal by Kendrick Lamar. I remember hearing that for the first time and thinking I need to find out who this guy is, it was just a few months before GKMC and that ended up being one of favourite albums that year and one of my favourite hip hop albums period.

Danielle karassik

Kendrick on nostalgia For me that sealed him as the greatest off all time I knew he was an amazing storyteller and his catalog was always amazing But the pen the bars the scheme He has no weaknesses

Rosa Eveningstar

JID's verse with Eminem on "Fuel." JID was always amazing, but featuring on a track with Eminem is a different beast. But JID's verse clearly established him as Em's equal in both lyrics and delivery. He did more than hold his own.

FigLeaf Bicarbonate

The "ten" sound scheme on that verse is absolutely ridiculous

SWORDAD

Yes and he was always average

SWORDAD

That was his weakest verse too

Chill vayx

"Kompany" - definitely put me onto smino, didn't know about him before that. Straight vibes, didn't have an opinion about smino before that but he left a strong impression and ever since I've been attentive to what he drops.

Marquis

I wanted to also comment a rapper you guys haven't covered before so St Peter by Chuck strangers Chuck strangers was part of Joey Badads and Capital Steeze Crew. This track made me realise why. I've been a fan ever since. He fit so much in only 1:30 and it flows perfectly

Lizzie

verse 2 - meet the grahams huge kendrick fan before and still am. but it for sure changed how I view him

SenseiGherbo

Saba’s verse from Sacrifices with Dreamville, that verse made me really respect his pen. Really did his thing… Cole just had to take over the show

Jonathan Riley

Chance in Acid Rain and Brain Cells changed how I viewed him! Brain cells helped me to understand the pure creativity that can be tapped into while Acid rain is that same creativity that’s been honed and focused within a certain narrative/focus. I could also say the same for Kendrick’s SAMDOT and Count Me Out

Redibelle

Em’s verse on Medicine Man with Dre. There are lots of songs that illustrate how much they respect each other and Em showing love. But that verse, and the way he delivered it. He said “I’ve been Dre’s sniper rifle with a scope this whole time” and basically said Dre points him at somebody in the rap game and Em destroys them. Because Dre said so. I got chills the first time I heard that. I felt the truth in that. I think there was an aspect of that when I look back at Em’s early stuff. He did go after people that weren’t obvious ops for him. People that seem to have crossed Dre in the past. Anyway, was fun to think about it that way, and it definitely changed how I viewed both of them, never heard anything like that from either of them ever again……

Erick Aguilar

Logic- once upon a time in Hollywood

Redibelle

Also Kendrick in “Hey Now”. When he was counting “one one thousand, two one thousand, four” and then made the comment about “I just strangled me a goat”. I always thought the counting was odd. Kendrick doesn’t use fillers in his verses unless it’s an adlib. Then, after a gummy one night, I heard that part….and IKNOW he was counting the seconds like a serial killer would, until Drake passed out. I am still sure. The only time I have ever heard Dot count on a verse. And in the same line, he is “strangling Drake” yeah, he was counting the seconds while he choked him. Pause. I am still sure that is what it was. I almost threw up when I first realized it. Kendrick always has the ability to startle me with his ruthlessness. He is different. Guess that’s why we love him!

Eli

Kendrick Heart part 3 and Part 2

Daniel Frazier

Childish gambino's verse On shoulda known before that verse i thought he was witty and clever after..... I questioned my top 5.

K.SAM

JID - 19 freestyle

Luke Brennan

Cench's verse on Our 25th Birthday - he's always had it, but going toe to toe with Dave in Dave's own field was so impressive

Emanuel Lee

Logic's verse on Sriracha w/ Tech N9ne and Joyner. At the time I was super excited because I thought it was gonna be a bar fest, but then it got to Logic and it's just him asking what kind of bars he should spit and apologizing to Tech for taking long to send in the verse 😂 it was hella disappointing, and looking back I'd say its when I started to phase out of his music.

Alex

Samphas verse on Saint Pablo is my favourite verse of all time, i have to be in a specific mood to listen to that verse

Donovan

Last verse of 4YEO, Last Verse of Duckworth on Damn and Saba Prom King

Mizael Hernandez

I actually just saw a clip 5 minutes ago about TECH talking about that verse. Check it out. It’s on BackOnFigg podcast! 😂🔥

Marquis
