For anyone who may not know, the album is titled 'Star Line' in reference to Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line: a literal ship intended to (willfully) take Black people back to Africa to connect our communities. The entirety of the album reflects this, even the songs that aren't as solid sonically. • "Drapetomania" is a 'medical condition' that masters made up, allegedly the disease responsible for slaves 'going crazy' and running away. The song is a modern-day representation of why certain demographics would call us crazy. On top of that, it's essential that we support members of our community that come from violence or misunderstandings, which is what BabyChief represents here. Peep the Richard Pryor outro on the song before it again 👀 • "Gun In Yo Purse" is about Black women needing to arm themselves as well, while also metaphorically hiding their man's secrets (especially from feds, etc). It also leans into his relationship because of the overarching theme of his divorce, and asking her to stay around even with the mistakes he makes. • Burn Ya Block" is the most forward of these. On initial listen, you might think "why burn your OWN block," but consider the gentrification of the neighborhoods he's speaking to. It's no longer your block. Even the more surface level lines about dancing are about the fact that there are now laws against music and festivities in places like Chicago and DC. Amazing concept, even though the sonics in those 3 didn't hit for me. "Drapetomania" got a LOT better with that context for me, though, especially listening to BabyChiefDoIt's verse again. Then, keep all of the higher-level songs in mind with this EXACT same concept of Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line. Changes the listening experience. Good job, Chance. 🔥
