“Rap is something you do. Hip-hop is something you live.” - KRS-One

Christian Sandoval

Drake is only hip hop to his fans and to people that don't really know hip hop cole hip hop Kendrick hip hop but when someone says Drake you always here "to me" that's what they always"to me his hip hop"

Dakoda moore

Of course Mos is right, anyone questioning this just doesn't have common sense lol. Drake's whole style is rooted in mainstream Pop production, he's a pop artist who happens to rap

Alwande🇿🇦

facts at the end of the day drake ain’t really like that, that’s why he’s always trying to maintain his relevancy by making more “commercial” music because he lacks the substance that is supposed to come with hip hop

Weedboots

Yea Mos is right. Drake got the aesthetics of hip hop without the substance. Its mostly pop songs disguised as hip hop songs

Arjun

To mos def’s point, in the last couple of years drake has become pop but that doesn’t mean he’s not hip hop. In his music, lyrics always come first and is never compromised. He’s never let up his slickness but to your guy’s point, style wise and content wise he’s trended towards pop. And the reason for that is the audience. Hip hop has been slowly declining with the amount of substance being present in the songs. If drake doesn’t bring his singing, melodies, and his own style and just strictly raps he’s not gonna be able to expand hip-hop to a wide array of audience. If drake right now decides to drop an album with strictly raps and nothing else he would be considered the goat no doubt but I don’t think he’s going to be able to satisfy everyone. I truly believe he wants to bring as many people along for this ride we call hip-hop. And I don’t think that’s possible if he doesn’t include his singing, melodies, and his featuring with other upcoming artists. I think it comes down to what you consider hip-hop. I get mos’s point but nowdays you can’t get hip hop to the reach it has by just strictly rapping. If the mainstream media standard is production and style, there’s no way you’re getting big as drake by just rapping. So kudos to drake for keeping rap alive by still rapping at a high level but also incorporating everything else to keep hip hop buzzing as much it is and having it reach the amount of people across the globe that it has. (Sorry for the long comment lol)

Cant understand how Prince put For all the dogs in his top 5 of the year. It would be like me putting Revival by Em in my top 5 of 2017. You have to be objective even when it comes to your favorite artist. For all the dogs is a bad album. Drake is a rapper/singer but he is not hip hop to its core. Post Malone is hip hop to certain people but it is not enough to say it.

Kostia

Hip Hop is a culture. Rap is an activity. Only one of the pillars. Cant put Nas / Krs-one / J cole in the same box as Drake.

babo

for all the dogs isn't a bad album its prolly just not for you, the album doesn't have to be hip hop to its core for it to be a good album

Vencsi

Man I'm still mad Posty shifted to the indie pop/folk pop sound as opposed to his Beerbongs and Bently's era sound which was so damn good imo.

Dynamic_Swami

This debate is cool or whatever , but I feel like what Yasiin said the following 5-10 minutes after this clip is the most important conversation that we’re not having. He tapped into some deep shit.

Rudra

So Drake is obviously pop, but I think he is also hip hop. He started rapping over dilla beats, he's a big underground hiphop and battle rap fan, and he's definitely both a rap and rnb artist. I am not a big drake fan, but I do think he is the face of hip hop today. Mos Def being more of a purist, I can see where he is coming from in saying Drake's music isn't hip hop, and I could see where he would look at all of drake's children not being hip hop.

Bank$-$avagE

The empire being hip hop its become pop, lacks content a message its pop songs with lyrics about crime mostly. Im here for it but mos def dont like the direction

Drew Daringer88

He's right, Drake IS Pop. Nothing hip hop about his stuff. But hey that's the direction hip hop is going on which is why I don't listen to anything made after 03' except maybe Ransom and them Griselda dudes.
