Here's a sweet little Piping Plover chick with easy, beginner-friendly techniques. Perfect for a relaxing watercolour session!

Hi everyone,

One morning, I painted this little bird in the handmade journal that Kimberly sent me. It was a quick and simple painting. Realizing I don't have many beginner-friendly bird tutorials, I decided to recreate it in my larger journal and film the process for this tutorial.

For this painting, I used four Schmincke colors, with substitute colors listed in Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton paints on the supplies list.

The techniques I used include wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and a small amount of negative painting, where you paint around the subject rather than on it. I have a full tutorial on negative painting here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/41036407.

I've simplified the subject, so you'll see that I didn’t include all the details. I've included plenty of progress photos to help with the painting process.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

PS: I'm working on the answers to the questions you asked me. I'll make a post here on Patreon when I have finished.

Aww it is so cute ! There are many of those where I was born 🐣

That’s really gorgeous…I certainly will be give this a try! When I joined your tutorials I just looked at the easy ones but realized that I was short changing myself by not starting at the beginning. So I have begun my journey at your very beginnings on the tutorial of wet on wet, wet on dry etc . One tutorial that I found to be so helpful was about warm and cool paints, what difference to my being able to mix my very limited set of paints to get a much better colour mix. I have created a journal out of Eraldo di Paola watercolour paper and have painted starting at 2019. I have Arches watercolour paper and next is new brushes. Thank you for such valuable information!

Ilse Koerts

Thanks Louise, what a cute one! As a beginner it’s easy to follow and all the progress photos helps a lot 🤗

Louise De Masi

Thank you for your lovely message Bev! It's wonderful to hear that you're diving into the basics and finding value in those foundational tutorials. Understanding warm and cool colours can definitely make a huge difference when mixing. Enjoy your new Arches paper and brushes. ❤️

Louise De Masi

Thank you Katherine. They are very cute- I've never seen one in real life though. ❤️

I would like to see more simple tutorials like this one. I like the puffin that you did in your sketchbook and posted on instagram. Any plans to do that one as tutorial on here?

Louise De Masi

Yes Kym - I plan to make a tutorial of the puffin as well.

I did this chick three times and all of them are awful. Especially the legs. Mine tend to look like human legs. The eyes too were hard, they are so big for this chick and again they didn't look like chick eyes. I may try again but I am working on the hummingbird on a branch, 2nd time now.

I enjoyed this but really struggled with it... it turned out okay in the end but it took me a while and I over worked it I think. I didn't find this one that easy, however it was still enjoyable lesson, thank you.

I would love to see the negativ painting Tutorial but it doesnt work. Is there a new one?

Amy Wa

Hi Dom, thank you. Yes I think so :)

Joyce A Stevens

Louise, I did the Piping Plover and am so pleased with it. For me to say that I am pleased, is saying a lot. I am so critical of all of my tries to paint.

Catherine Devins

Newbie here. Thanks for this tutorial. Your instructions are detailed. I play the tutorial at .75 speed so I have a bit more time to understand and paint. That works for me.

Louise De Masi

That's such a good idea! Thanks Catherine and welcome again! 💕

Peggy Huff

I would love to see how you made your journal! I am a very beginner at making my own journals, but would love to make my own watercolor journel! Thanks,

Michelle

I’m new to your channel and just adored this lesson, my first try took about an hour plus and my husband loves how it turned out, I’m definitely going to do this lesson of this sweet little bird over and over to see how I improve. Your teaching is so wonderful and so incredibly easy to follow along with. Thank you so much!! 🐦🤍

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Michelle. That's a great way to learn! ❤️

Hello, why can't we just use Payne's Grey instead of mixing colors? I just tarted and I must admit that it's going a little too fast... Will start again.

Louise De Masi

Hi Cynthia, You can use Payne’s Grey if that’s what you have. There’s nothing wrong with it at all. Use the colours in your own kit and work in a way that feels comfortable. In this tutorial I mixed French Ultramarine and Transparent Sienna because it gives me more control over the temperature of the grey. I can push it cooler or warmer as needed, and on wet paper the two pigments separate beautifully, which adds a bit more life to the wash. Payne’s Grey is usually made from multiple pigments and is semi-opaque, so it behaves a little differently. That doesn’t make it wrong, just different. If you’re just starting out, keep it simple and use what you have. You can always experiment with mixing your own greys later.

I’ve watched your YouTube videos for a couple of years now and have enjoyed them. I decided to join Patreon and have watched several technique videos and am excited to try following one of your Tutorials. One problem I’m having is I cannot find the supplies list using the Patreon app. Can you point me to the right spot for that?

Louise De Masi

Hi Conhender, Dom here. As far as I can see in the app, the supplies list is at the bottom of the post. For me it's the second last download, before the zip file.
