Hi everyone,

Paint a cupcake in your journal!

In this tutorial, we'll be painting a fun cupcake – perfect for adding to your journal!

We'll explore wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, as well as lifting highlights on dry paper to bring your cupcake to life. It's a great exercise to practise and refine your watercolour skills.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. There are lots of progress photos of my painting included to help you.

You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

Wow, what timing, Louise!🥰 My sister’s birthday is next week!🧁🥳 Thank you!

Beverly Amato

This will make another fabulous birthday card. I can’t wait to try it.

Elizabeth Russell

I am trying to download the zip file but I don't know what that is, I tried the square with the up arrow and I only get a description of what it is then it say file is downloaded but I don't know where to. Not to savvy with all this downloading stuff.

Louise De Masi

Hi Elizabeth, Dom here. The zip is just all the other files bundles up in one package. When you download it your computer should be able to unpack it.

Barbara Ford

Thank you so much for the very helpful (and brilliant) chart for color substitutions. I want to gradually switch over to Schmincke paints, but I do have SO many W&N paints on hand. This chart is GREAT.

Louise De Masi

You're very welcome Barbara. Let me know if you need help with any colour conversions I havent listed yet.

I am not sure if you are using a PC or a Mac. For PC, look in your Downloads folder (My PC>Downloads>Archive.zip. Once you find the Archive.zip file> right click on the file> Extract All will open the file zip extract menu, and ask you where you want to put the files. Just click Ok for now. You will see two Archive folders now - one is just an Archive folder and the Archive.zip. Double-click on the Archive folder and the files for the project will be in there. If you are using a Mac, reply and I can give some instructions using Finder.

I‘m german and I hope you will understand my english … I used Saral paper to transfer. When I watered the cupcake, the graphite dissolved and became muddy. the vertical lines disappeared. Is Saral paper not suitable for the wet on wet technique? Thank you

Martina

I translate with the Google translater … I can‘t open the link, but I think there is only the black one from Saral and so far I haven‘t had the problem. Maybe because there are a lot of lines of graphite close together on the cupcake, so you can see the smearing more quickly. Perhaps I buy I lightboard to transfer with a pencil. But can I strech my paper afterwards? I think then I have to erase bevor stretching…

Louise De Masi

You need to copy and paste the link into your browser to see it. Patreon doesn't enable links in the chat for some reason. If you are going to use a light board you will need to trace the cupcake onto the paper before you stretch it. Yes you can stretch your paper after the line drawing is on it - if you have used a graphite pencil.

Robyn Mills

This looks 😋. If one was to put the sprinkles on the top would you cover them with masking fluid then paint them last? Robyn

Myrrhine Grossi

Very 😋. I'll paint next week. Thank you Louise.

Brenda Farias

This was a lot of fun! And I'm so happy with the result. For some reason, I find your painting style intimidating, and, as a beginner, I had subscribed to Patreon before but kept messing up even the most simple tutorials, so I kinda gave up. But I decided to subscribe again because I love that you paint so many animals and I'm preparing myself to start doing that. But I LOVE painting food - pancakes, cupcakes, macarons, I find it so much fun and the colors are awesome to play with. So this was the first tutorial of yours I managed to follow through and paint along and I loved it - your patience to explain every detail without being overwhelming is a talent. And in this tutorial I also tried to lift paint after it's dry, something I hadn't risked before, and it turned out pretty nice, definitely a useful skill! Thanks a lot. Wouldn't mind more cute/food tutorials sometimes.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Brenda! I’m pleased you enjoyed it and that you gave it another go. Painting food is definitely fun, and I’m so glad the tutorial felt approachable. Well done on lifting highlights, it's a handy skill. I'll keep the food ideas in mind for future tutorials

Debra Dickson

I love this happy little cupcake and am planning to try it next! Would white acrylic paint work instead of the gouache?

Louise De Masi

Hi Debra, Yes, you can use white acrylic paint, but it behaves a bit differently to gouache. Acrylic dries permanently and often with a slight sheen, so it can stand out more on the surface and won’t blend back into the watercolour if you need to soften it. Gouache, on the other hand, stays matte and can be reworked a little, which makes it easier to integrate into the painting. If you do use acrylic, just use it sparingly and place it carefully, because it’s harder to adjust once it’s dry.

Debra Dickson

Thank you for explaining the difference! I’ll find me some white gouache before trying the cupcake. I do absolutely love watching you paint!❤️

Just finished this and as always Louise's instructions and calm encouraging manner allowed me to complete a lovely piece.
