Hi everyone,

Let’s get into the festive spirit with this Nutcracker watercolour tutorial! I thought this would be the perfect subject for December. We’ll play with techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, lifting highlights, and mixing colours to bring this holiday favourite to life. It’s a fun way to capture a bit of Christmas magic in your painting.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. There are plenty of progress photos of my painting included to help you.

You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy it!

Louise

Yay! Looking forward to this tutorial! Thank you Louise

sharon franzoni

Where are his legs , can we have a full length Nutcracker please 🙏

Louise De Masi

I decided to focus on the upper part of the Nutcracker to make sure the details stood out, as including the full figure would have made him too small on the paper. I’ve got a busy schedule right now with other Christmas projects, but I’ll definitely keep the idea of a full-length Nutcracker in mind for next year.

Audrey Reed

This is so cute! I am looking forward to trying it. Thank you!

Tania

Lovely! Thanks Louise. I'll try this one during the holidays. :)

Polly Johnson

Oh I am so looking forward to giving this a try 😀

Kileen P Smith

Hi Louise. I traced the line drawing, transferred it to my paper. As i started painting the hat I noticed that the line drawing is a mirrored image to the one in the tutorial?? A bit confused, but I'm going to carry on!! I love this Jolly Fella.

Ariane

I’ve made the same discovery so trying to follow along with the tutorial whilst trying to mirror it. Hope yours turns out well

Audrey Reed

You can flip it. I could not post it here so I posted it in the chat

Ariane

Thanks Audrey, I had already started it though so I’ll persevere

Louise De Masi

Whoops....silly me! That must have happened in my haste to post it early in the month. The correct drawing is there now. I'm sorry to have caused confusion.

Louise De Masi

Sorry Ariane and Kileen- the correct drawing is there now.

Toni South

Beautiful! Such a lovely tutorial. Look forward to trying it!!

Lidiya Falfushinsky

Absolutely stunning work and tutorial is amazing. Thank you, can’t wait to try it .

Kelle Luoma

Looking forward to trying this, but not a fan of the hard shadow edges where there were none in the photo. I understand it’s a style choice on your part, but to my eye, it makes the painting a bit harsh and rigid. Thank you for showing how to mix the greens, always helpful and I love the green shades!

Fadila Sides

C'est magnifique très bon choix pour cette de fêtes de fin d'année merci beaucoup et vraiment bravo 👍👏🏻❤️🙏🎨

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Kelle. Paint them with soft edges. I'm demonstrating a different way of painting them in this tutorial.

ann fuller

Great tutorial, can’t wait to start it.

I'm so glad to see Prussian Blue! It's my absolute favorite blue. I love French Ultramine too, but Prussian has my heart. <3 I love the green tones of this nutcracker. So soothing!

Dianne Heaney

I still do not see the corrected line drawing. I thought I had copied the correct option but after transferring see that I have not. Please indicate where the correct version is

Louise De Masi

Hi Dianne, the three line drawings attached at the bottom of the list of files are all the correct version. There is the normal sized drawing and the two enlarged drawings spread over two files. The original line drawing I had uploaded was flipped. I have deleted that drawing and replaced it with the correct version. Refresh your page if you can't see it.

Dianne Heaney

For me, the line drawings are still the mirror version of your tutorials. I don’t understand why but I close the program, reopen and they are still the same way

Louise De Masi

Hi Dianne, Dom here. Did you download the new versions above? I just checked and they are definitely the right way around now individually and in the zip.

Dianne Heaney

I just printed whatever was there. When I look at them they appear to be opposite of those Louise uses in the tutorial. I did not look in the zip

Louise De Masi

Did you delete your line drawing and re-download it? You'll be able to tell by looking at the dots on the box (the gift).

Dianne Heaney

I am afraid I do not know how to delete the line drawing in the list and re-download it. I assume you removed the incorrect line drawing and replaced it with the correct one. No?

Dianne Heaney

It might be the way I transferred the drawing to watercolor paper. I put the line drawing on a glass door and my watercolor paper over it and then draw the image as it comes through. I don’t use saral paper nor do I draw the outline on the back side of the paper to use to transfer the image. If I used that method I would get the mirror image. Hopefully, that makes sense. I will paint a second version as if the sun was coming from the opposite direction

Louise De Masi

I see. that method will definitely give you the mirror image.

Thanks for offering the archive / zip version!

I loved painting this nutcracker, especially employing the "loose painterly style". I painted it twice and was quite pleased with my second painting. Learning with practice. I especially enjoy your Christmas pieces that I hang up each year among my Christmas decorations. My kids have begun to look for my latest Christmas piece:) Thanks Louise.
