Tidelines can be one of the most frustrating things in watercolour, but they don’t have to be! In this short tutorial, I’ll show you how to prevent unwanted hard edges when rewetting a dried wash, plus some easy ways to fix them if they appear. I hope you find this helpful - let me know if you’ve struggled with tidelines before!

How do you prevent tide lines with wet in wet techniques?

Louise De Masi

When working wet in wet, tidelines usually form when the paper starts drying unevenly, causing pigment to settle at the edges. To prevent them: Keep the paper evenly wet. If one area starts drying while you're still painting, you might get tidelines. Use enough water. If your brush is too dry compared to the wet surface, it can cause hard edges. Make sure your brush has a similar moisture level to the paper. Blend edges while damp. If you see a tideline forming, use a clean, damp brush to gently soften it before it dries. Work at a slight angle . This helps excess water flow downward instead of pooling in one spot.

Hi. Did you mention a second video where you talk about the tidelines where the paint pulls to the edges? That's the one I struggle with sometimes. Do you mind pointing me on the right direction? Thank you so much. This video was very useful.

Louise De Masi

I'm glad it was helpful Sandra. I am yet to make a video where the paint pools around the edges. I'll get onto that as soon as I can.

Ah, okay! My apologies, I thought it already existed. Thank you for your response!
