Paint this rusty old truck in watercolour! It’s an advanced painting, but I’ll walk you through every step if you’re up for it.

Hi everyone,

If you enjoyed my old rusty car tutorial from a few years ago, you’ll love this one too!

This new watercolour tutorial is all about painting texture, rust, weathered paint, and that beautiful contrast between the warm, earthy tones and cool sky blues.

I’ve labelled this one as suitable for advanced painters because of the detail and complexity but don’t let that scare you off. I walk you through every step, just like always, so feel free to give it a go even if you’re not at an advanced level yet.

I've divided it into three parts - this is Part 1.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/130643166

Part 3 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/130643335

Take your time with it because I painted it over a few days.

I hope you enjoy it.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. There are 16 progress photos of my painting to assist.

You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I loved painting the truck from a few years ago. I will love painting this one, too. I hope your hand surgery is going well.

Wow, I can't believe you were able to post this tutorial. I hope that means you are healing well. I love this truck, it looks like one that sat in our old farm for a long time. I love the colors you've used. Thanks for sharing and feel better.

Renata Bošnir

I like it and I will paint it. I wish you a speedy recovery after the surgery and that everything goes well.

Such a stunning painting 💖. Thank you for these tutorials. Take care and enough rest Louise 💐🌸

Hi Louise, excuse my ignorance, but what is a smooshing brush? I don't have this brush and haven't heard of it before. If it is a special kind of brush and what is it used for?

Louise De Masi

Hi Natalie. Rosemary & Co make one, and Neef do as well. It’s a dense, domed brush made from badger hair, designed for blending, softening edges, dry brushing, and creating texture. It’s sometimes called a smudger or blender, and works in all mediums. You don’t need to buy one to complete the tutorial though - any old brush that’s a bit worn out and slightly stiff can work just as well for smudging the paint.

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Betty. I hope you do love painting it.

Natalie Hughes

Thank you for the explanation. I am still learning so much :). I think I have a brush that will do the trick. Got this one soaking in the bath for stretching. Can't wait to try. It is gorgeous. Love the subject and the colours. Hope your hand is doing ok? x

Coleen

I just love this painting unfortunately, my car looks like it has cancer.
