Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Swallows tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/144254151

In this tutorial, we’ll paint three little swallows using a mix of watercolour techniques.

We’ll start with a loose, soft background to frame the birds, then build up the feathers with gentle layers of colour. You’ll learn how to balance soft and hard edges, use wet-on-wet for subtle blends, and apply dry brushing to add texture to the foreground.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are listed below this message. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

There are 17 progress photos of my painting to assist you.

The reference photo was taken by Monika Helmecke from Pixabay: https://pixabay.com/photos/close-up-swallows-bird-swallow-4518948/

I hope you enjoy painting them.

Oh gosh, they are so adorable!!!!

MartyJ

They look lovely. Is this something you have in Aus'?

Sammie Bryant

Too cute, they look like the babies born in a nest over my front door.

Am beginning all over again after years of soft pastel. Please tell me where I can find your basics, the drawings look like a very dark pencil, unusual (for me to see). I saw by chance a demo about the paints you use and wanted to find that again but still looking. Arches 300, pencil ? all very good. for me to try to get back to where i was some years ago. Am 85 now and arthritis everywhere! But the joy of painting is a forever and such a gift. Sorry for long wordy comment, thank you.

Hi Cynthia, if you click on the 'collections' tab on the main page of Patreon you will find I've sorted tutorials into collections. There is a 'super newbie' collection for beginners and also a 'beginners' collection of tutorials in there. You'll find all the other posts on the word index that is pinned to the top of the home page of Patreon - the home page is the 'P' shaped Patreon logo on the left side of the page (if you are using a computer).

Hi Louise, that was supersonic speed fast reply ! I have been looking at many of the tutorials + will continue to. A word about the pencil you use for drawing ? You are so good at explaining everything, won't be bothering you again for a while just the pencil kind + # Thank you.

Hi Cynthia, I use a simple HB pencil for drawing directly onto watercolour paper. Sometimes I'll also use a Staedtler mechanical pencil (hb usually) to draw on the paper as well. To transfer the line drawing to the watercolour paper I use transfer paper. You can buy it at art supplies stores. It acts like the old fashioned carbon paper we used in receipt books but it is safe for our artistic needs.

Interesting that I cannot fast forward on this video, but I can on part 2. Any suggestions?

Louise De Masi

Hi Shirene, I'd try refreshing the page. If that doesn't help, log out and log back in again. You could also try a different browser. Google Chrome is less glitchy than some of the others.

Valerie

Just finished this tutorial and once again, I have learned so much. I want to try it again so I can do better on some of the techniques that were new to me. ( My eradicator brush and I had “words” at one point). Thank you for all of your suggestions and advice on the tutorials!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Valerie and I'm so pleased you learned a lot. ❤️

You could also try clicking on where it says "YouTube" at the bottom right on the video, it'll open in YouTube then instead (could be some weird issue with your browser combined with it being embedded on Patreon).
