Hi everyone,

In this tutorial, I take you through painting a small wren perched on an old door handle. The reference was created by combining two separate photos, one of the handle and one of the bird.

This is Part 1.

Here is Part 2: https://www.patreon.com/posts/149875020

The focus is on working wet on wet, letting the paint do some of the work, lifting highlights after the paint has dried, and keeping details loose and painterly rather than overworked. I talk through many of the decisions I make as the painting develops, particularly around value, colour, and keeping the focus on the wren. I hope this tutorial helps you build confidence and apply the same ideas to your own paintings.

All of the files you need to complete the painting, including 20 progress photos of my painting, are attached below my message here. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

Enjoy!

Absolutely love this!!!

I really like this, it’s detailed but sweet and nostalgic. This reminds me of my Abulita’s (grandma’s) house. I’m also really grateful that you post both parts of the tutorial together. Many artists take weeks between parts. You work hard for us and I’m appreciative, thanks for all you do!

Louise De Masi

Sammie, thank you so much. I love that it reminded you of your Abulita’s house, that’s such a beautiful connection to make. I’m happy posting both parts together works well for you. Thanks for your continued support and kindness, it’s very much appreciated. ❤️

I just watched the entire tutorial. This is fascinating. I will try it, and it will take me a while to complete. Louise, how id your hand? I can see that it’s still wrapped up. Take good care of yourself.

Louise De Masi

I hope you enjoy it Beverly- just take your time. Thanks for asking about my hand. It's not too bad considering. I wear the compression bandage most days because it makes it feel more comfortable. A recent CT scan has revealed that the bone is not creating a union with the graft yet- which is very disappointing. I have to have another CT scan in 3 months to check again......here's hoping! I don't want to have to have more surgery. ❤️
