Hi everyone,

I thought I’d share a few of the paintings I’m currently turning into tutorials so you can see what’s coming up.

The first one is a dog’s eye study. Over the years quite a few people have told me that they find dogs’ eyes difficult to paint, so I decided to make a study that focuses just on the eye itself. It’s a great exercise for practising values, soft blends and reflections without having to worry about the rest of the portrait. In the tutorial I paint a larger eye first so you can clearly see the techniques, and then I paint a smaller version closer to the size you’d normally paint in a portrait.

I’ve also been working on a painting of three lambs. This one is all about soft edges, texture and subtle colour in the white wool. It’s a good exercise in keeping the painting loose and fresh while still suggesting form.

Another painting I finished today is a hoopoe. Someone asked me to paint one and I thought it would make a lovely tutorial because of the interesting crest and the beautiful warm colours. This one is fairly quick to paint.

I’ve also been painting orchids. Orchids are always a pleasure to paint because of the soft colour transitions in the petals and the delicate shapes.

And finally, I’ve been working on a value study of a teacup and saucer, painted using just one colour. Value studies are a really useful exercise because they train you to focus on light and shadow without the distraction of colour. When the values are correct, the form of the subject naturally appears.

I’m currently editing these tutorials and I’ll start releasing them here on Patreon once they’re ready.

I love the dog’s eye. The rest look fun too but I lost my baby girl last August and at some point I want to paint a picture of her. The most important thing about her were her eyes. They were beautiful - she spoke to me with them. Thanks Louise. l look forward to it.

These are all excellent pieces, I am eager to focus on the dogs eye as I have just started drawing dogs and I think if you get the eyes right it makes the subject come alive.

Lori DiPaola

I am going to draw a rough sketch from Duke’s photo ( our golden 🐾 ) and follow one of your tutorials with lost edges and see what happens! 🤓..subbing in colors I think will work .. I haven’t done a solo painting yet … so we’ll see . 🙏

Lori DiPaola

These paintings always seem to look so effortless. The way you allow the paint and the water to dance is the magic, and your voice overs for why and how to apply this technique is so encouraging… I love the seal painting I did, the lost edges, the blurred edges and sharp contrasts , the water droplets and cauliflower splatters for texture..beautiful. This is the style I love most , want to nurture. Thank you Louise

Louise De Masi

Lori, thank you so much! I love how you described the paint and water dancing, that’s exactly the feeling I hope to capture. Those soft and lost edges, along with textures really bring a painting to life. It sounds like you’ve found a style that resonates with you, and that’s such an important step. Keep nurturing it, you’re definitely on the right path.

Diane Jenkins

looking forward to getting back into the paint, I have been dealing with an eye issue for almost a year, two surgeries later and eye injection schedule and I am seeing so much better. I know you went through the long haul of recovery too. It's good to be back on the up side! I absolutely love, love the orchids!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Diane. I'm sorry you're dealing with eye issues- that must be awful! I'm glad you're seeing better now though and can return to painting. 🥰
