Hi everyone,

In this two-part class, I walk you through how I paint soft, diffused petals using wet-on-wet washes, then build up depth and detail with controlled layers. I also talk about colour mixing using a limited palette and how to create a sense of depth by varying edges and contrast.

You’ll find lots of progress photos included for download so you can follow along at your own pace.

This is Part 1.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/orchids-tutorial-157128135

This class is suitable for intermediate painters, but beginners can follow along because everything is shown step by step.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below this message. Download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

PS: This orchid was just a supermarket find. I love orchids, but I’m no expert when it comes to keeping them alive. It’s lost its flowers now, so I’m hoping I can get it to bloom again. I’ve got it near a north-facing window and I’m trying not to overwater it… any tips are welcome!

I collect orchids. I’m so happy to learn this.

Elise Morley

I’ve been waiting for this to be a tutorial! And I share your orchid brown thumb!!

Louise De Masi

Have fun Elise. Lol- this particular orchid is still alive! 🤞🏻

Beautiful, i have lost a few orchids but have a couple that thrive. I found keep watering to minimal, water from base and good light is working.

Sammie Bryant

What a beautiful painting, I love the colors you used. I very much appreciate that you quickly post the second part of the tutorial, some artists take weeks…ugh! A couple of days ago I threw away the remaining stem of a once beautiful orchid. It was a gift also from a grocery store. I did keep the nice ceramic pot they came in and instructions that said to water with ice cubes. So that is a hint, I guess they like cold? I obviously didn’t use enough cubes or was it that I used too many🤷🏻‍♀️

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sammy and thank you for the orchid tip...lol! 🤷‍♀️

I just got mine to bloom again for the first time! Once I got the watering down all it needed was (orchid) fertilizer. For watering, you only want to water when you don't see much green on the roots. All grey roots means they need water, so run water through them to get the roots and substrate damp, but don't let them stand in it. They are unhappy wet because they grow on trees not in the ground. Not an expert by any means, but it seems to work. Excited to try this painting!

Hi Louise, I love the colours of this orchid and may try to paint it even though it is advanced for me. I was wondering if I can use your Louise de Masi brush set which I bought recently? Does it have the right brushes for this tutorial? And also many of the other tutorials as I see that you still list the Da Vinci brushes but I would prefer to use your brushes if possible. Thanks for your help.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, Yes, you can definitely use the brush set for this tutorial. 😊 The Da Vinci Maestro brushes I used were sizes 0, 2, 3 and 7, but the Jackson’s brush set will work well too. I would suggest: Use the size 1 when I use the size 0 Use the size 5 when I use the size 2 and 3 Use either the size 8 or 10 when I use the size 7 I still list the Da Vinci brushes because they are the brushes I originally painted many of the tutorials with, but the studio synthetics brush set is versatile enough for most of my classes, so you should be able to use them across many tutorials without any problems.

I have a greenhouse of orchids!!

Louise De Masi

Oh my goodness! That must be wonderful Ellen. I know who to come to for my orchid growing questions! This little orchid is still going strong. It bloomed a second time. I think I may have to repot it soon. ❤️

Ellen Barlow

Awe good for you!! That is a really positive sign if it has rebooted for you!!

Gail Batten

Why can’t I get drawing, and reference direction

Louise De Masi

Hi Gail, Dom here. I'm not sure what you are asking. Can you elaborate?
