Hi everyone,

Welcome to the Hoopoe tutorial.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you step by step through the entire painting process, from the first washes through to the final details. We’ll focus on creating soft feather textures, mixing rich darks from a limited palette, and using negative painting to help define the crest.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below, including 10 progress photos of my painting. These progress photos are also shown throughout the tutorial, giving you clear places to pause the video and catch up before moving on.

Download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy this painting, and I look forward to seeing your work in the community chat and Facebook group.

Wow, this is an amazing looking bird. What a great tutorial, this looks like a fun and satisfying one to complete. Thanks so much, hope you are doing well!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sammie! It was a really enjoyable bird to paint. I hope you have fun with it if you decide to give it a go. I’m doing well, thank you. My youngest is moving back home next week after 11 years in Sydney, so we’re looking forward to having the whole family together again. Hope all is well wth you! 🥰

Hi Louise, Thank you for this beautiful tutorial! 💕. I especially love the eye. You paint eyes so well…full of depth and emotion and with that realistic shiny look, not flat or dull. I was wondering if you would consider painting a rainbow lorikeet for us? They are so beautiful and are found in Australia.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Monalisa- yes definitely, I can make a rainbow lorikeet tutorial. ❤️

Jennifer kneale

This looks beautiful thankyou! Is there anyway you could put the full gang gang tutorial up or at least the eye? It’s so gorgeous xx

Louise De Masi

Thank you Jennifer! The Gang Gang wasn't filmed completely (I'm sorry) - what I have of it is on YouTube. It was painted before I started making tutorials for Patreon.
