Hi everyone,

In this tutorial, we’ll paint three green apples resting on a striped tea towel.

We’ll use wet on wet washes and glazing to build the colour and form of the apples and we'll also work our way through the folds, shadows and stripes in the fabric.

This is a good painting if you’re comfortable with the basics and ready to build your skills. The stripes need a little patience, but they’re a great exercise in careful brushwork and observation.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/louisedemasi/posts/apple-stripes-2-168547173

The files are attached below, including 15 progress photos to help you as you paint. These are also shown throughout the tutorial, so you can pause the video, compare your painting with mine and catch up before continuing. The files you need to complete the painting are attached below. You can download the files individually, or download them all at once by clicking the “Download all” button or the ZIP file.

I hope you’ll enjoy painting this one with me!

Excellent! I’ve been waiting for this one, love it

Nicki Nichols

Oooo I've been waiting for this to drop. This one is gonna be doozy but I'm up for the challenge. I'll probably have to paint this multiple times before it turns out right l

Louise De Masi

You might surprise yourself. Take it slow- and follow along step by step. You'll be fine. Thanks Nicki! 🥰

Lynn

Oh so have i. I can't wait to get started! Thank you Louise

Heike Trotno

Thank you so much for this lovely tutorial. I've been waiting for it, since I saw your preview. So sorry that I have no time to paint these next days - but I'll start it soon.

Louise De Masi

I hope you find time to paint soon Heike. Thank you!

Kelly Holliday

So excited to paint this one! Looks challenging and oh so beautiful!

Abbie Logsdon

Progress photo 7 won’t open for me, is it just me?

Louise De Masi

Hi Abbie, Dom here. Progress photo 7 appears to be working for me. Try downloading again.

Sammie Bryant

I’ve been looking forward to this tutorial even though it looks way above my skill level. I really appreciate all of your progress photos, they really do help.

Jarosław Bogacki

I have same problem with progres photo 7. Like there’s nothing there when I open it…

Louise De Masi

That's really strange- have you tried downloading the zip file? It has all the files in there. Let me know if there is still a problem with it after you do that.

Jarosław Bogacki

Unfortunately same problem with zip file. When unpacking all, photo no 7 seems corrupted 🫤

Janet

Love this one. Good brush control practice! One question: when I look at the reference photo I see a slight sliver of reflected light on the right side of the apples. I'm not even sure if that's possible; could it be a reflection of the cloth? Just wondering if you see it or if my eyes are worse than I thought.

Louise De Masi

Sorry- I just saw your message. I've no idea why that would happen. When I get to the studio this morning- I'll upload a new file. I'll let you know when it's there.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Janet! Yes, I can see the little sliver of light you mean. It could be reflected light from the tea towel. I chose not to paint it in. I don’t think we always need to include every little thing we see in a reference photo, and sometimes simplifying things works better. 💕

Louise De Masi

I've uploaded a new file. An easy fix- there was a dot missing after the number 7. Thanks for letting me know.

Louise De Masi

I've uploaded a new progress photo 7 file. Thanks for letting me know Abbie.

Janet

Makes sense. I pretty much knew you saw it...your eye is phenomenal. You were able to point out the most subtle shadows in the cloth. I think I might try to leave it in if I can. I'm thinking of one of your older Patreon tutorials where we painted large grapes and included the reflected light. I always liked the look of that. If it doesn't work it will still look good.

Nicki Nichols

No matter how much I try my edges are not as smooth as they really should or could be. Am I using too much water? I feel like that's the problem because it pools then at those edges right?

Louise De Masi

Hi Nicki - they look ok to me from the photo. Have you tried stretching your paper so that it remains flat when you work on it? It makes a world of difference.

Lison

Dear Louise, I absolutely love your teaching and am presently working on the apples and strikes tutorial. It is really great and extremely well explained. I have a doubt about the warmth of the colors you mention in the supplies list. Is there no inversion of the warm/cold ? Blue warm and yellow cold ?

Carol

I just joined. I feel stupid for asking this, but where is the supplies list you mention?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lison, thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying the tutorial. I think you’re referring to where I’ve labelled the colours as warm or cool in the supplies list. There isn’t an inversion, I’m referring to the temperature of the colours within their own colour family. So a blue that leans towards violet is considered a warmer blue, while a yellow that leans towards green is considered a cooler yellow. I hope that’s what you were asking about. There's more about the temperature of colours here: https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2024/5/3/how-to-identify-and-use-warm-and-cool-colours-in-watercolour

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, Welcome! All of the files are listed below my message under the video. The Supplies List is the 3rd last file.
