Hi everyone,

I know you’re busy, and sometimes a long, involved painting can feel a little daunting. You might just want to get your paints out, paint something simple and get some practice without committing to a big project.

That’s why I’ve decided to start a new series of Quick Paint tutorials. These will be shorter, simpler paintings that still give you the chance to practise useful watercolour techniques.

For this first one, we’re painting a watercolour pencil. We’ll practise wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, building up layers of colour, creating straight edges and adding a cast shadow to give the pencil some form. We’ll also let a little colour escape around the sharpened end to keep things loose.

These little paintings would be perfect for a watercolour journal or sketchbook, or simply whenever you feel like painting something that isn’t too taxing. Once you’ve painted this one, try painting one of your own pencils. Change the colour or angle and use the same techniques again. It’s a great way to turn the tutorial into a little extra practice.

I’ve included the reference photo, line drawing and progress photos below to help you as you paint. Use the 'download all' button or click on the zip file to download the files to your device.

I hope you enjoy this first Quick Paint!

Love smaller simple paintings to use as a warm up for larger undertakings, or just to keep those creative juices flowing on a busy day. What a nice idea. Thanks.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Joyce....a way to keep our hand in when we're busy. 💕

Claire

I love the short/quick pencil tutorial. Great for times when you have a little bit of time and want to paint but not do something complicated. I hope you post more of these. Thanks Louise!

Louise De Masi

I'm glad- thanks Claire. Yes more are coming. I have another one coming this month.

Claire

Hello Louise, I also want to say thank you for the tip you sent out on taking a black and white photo of your painting to check your values. I was struggling with a painting getting the values right and this tip really worked!!!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Claire. It always helps. If it looks a bit flat or uninteresting when it's in black and white it's most likely the value contrasts that need to be deepened.
