Lantern Tutorial - Part 1 (Patreon)

Hi everyone,
With October here, I thought this beautiful old lantern would be a lovely subject to paint this month.
This is Part 1.
Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/louisedemasi/posts/lantern-tutorial-171438296
There’s lots to explore in this tutorial. We’ll work with soft and lost edges, paint the reflections in the glass and gradually build up layers of orange, red and brown to create that aged and weathered metal.
We’ll let the watercolour do some of the work for us. Rather than trying to control every mark, we will let colours bleed and mingle on the wet paper and use blooms and broken edges to add texture and interest.
We’ll also look at simplifying the reflections in the glass into shapes of light and dark, and towards the end I introduce a charcoal pencil for a few extra dark accents and textural marks.
I’ve included 16 progress photos to help you as you paint. These are shown throughout the video at useful stopping points, so you can pause, compare your painting with mine and catch up before moving on.
I hope you enjoy this one. I had a lot of fun painting it and letting those lovely watercolour effects happen on their own.
