Hi everyone,

Here's a new watercolour tutorial for you. This little fellow lives down the back of our place near the forest. They are called a fantail for obvious reasons. They swish their little tails around like a fan to disturb the insects so they can eat them. They are difficult to photograph because they are so little and they move pretty fast.

I use salt to create the texture on his head and body. Having success with salt is all in the timing. You have to wait until the 'glossyness' (is that a word?) of the sheen on the paper is starting to diminish before you apply the salt. If you're too early it won't work and if you wait too long, it won't work. I have a tutorial on YouTube that demonstrates this technique really well if you need to know more https://youtu.be/we9SH-hRvTk

Enjoy!

Grey Fantail for Patreon

Comments

Gail Witten

Hi Louise. I've been painting for 4 months and just signed up with you. I learned a lot from this tutorial. I actually started a second little fantail to do alongside the first because I thought I'd wrecked the first one with my less than perfect wet on wet skills. So I practiced on the first and then would do the second. And the first looks better because it's less overworked! Haha. Thanks so much for sharing your skills. I look forward to doing more.

Louise De Masi

Hi Gail, lol- that has happened to me a few times as well. My study worked out better than the second painting. It's all good! The more you paint- the better you become. Thank you!

Pauline Irwin

Am I entitled to paint the grey fantail on the brush strokes membership..am having trouble navigating the site

Tanya

Great tutorial. Thank you

Karen Read

Salt. My poor bird looked like he had the mange after salt. 😂 After a couple of washes, he is better. I had a huge problem mixing up my black concoction. I used all three colors and followed your lead in mixing, but I kept getting a greenish tinge, then a reddish one, then a blue one... could not get the paInts to properly blend to a nice black, so I added a little Holbein Neutral Tint and voila!, a fairly decent black. I have no idea why or what but sometimes it happens and I just tried to roll with it. This little guy is adorable and I am working up my courage (and patience) to paint the dog. Thank you, Louise, for another terrific tutorial!

Louise De Masi

Thanks for letting me know about the Neutral Tint. I've never used that before. I'm glad it worked for you. Salt washes can be tricky and it's good that you were able to save it with the washes over the top. Thanks again Karen. 💜

Karen Read

Your comment during the tutorial was spot on...sometimes it works beautifully and the next it goes south fast. I’m blaming the salt. (😂) It couldn’t possibly have been the painter! The Neutral Tint seems to be basically a black but maybe not as black if that makes sense.

Louise De Masi

I just saw your painting on Instagram. It's sooooo cute. I love it and your salt wash is perfect! 😘

Karen Read

Thank you! (I fear I am somewhat of a perfectionist)

Tricia Commons

Feeling frustrated with grey fantail tutorial in Patreon and Youtube tutorial of crested pigeon online. Did both a few times but both turn out too dark. Any advice? I use Arches cold pressed 140 lb paper and Winsor & New watercolors. I premix grey, etc. I guess it takes much more practice.

Tricia Commons

Opps meant to type Winsor and Newton.

Louise De Masi

Hi Tricia. It does take a lot of practice. I'm happy to take a look at your paintings if you want to email me a photo of them. That will give me a better idea of what you might be having trouble. My email is ldemasi@iprimus.com.au

LOVED painting this fantail Louise, it was such fun!!... your lesson was brilliant as always xx many thanks for taking me on the journey and sharing your enormous talent & skills as an artist. I love the way you see your subject, break it down, identify what and how to simplify and make it "pop". Peering over your shoulder"is a privilege and accelerates my learning making watercolour even more enjoyable xx It woudl be great to have a place for students to share their paintings :)

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Tracy. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I feel privileged to be able to show you what I do. I wish there was a way for patrons to share work here on Patreon but I do have a private Facebook group you can join. I'm not a fan on Facebook, however it's good for sharing paintings and ideas. Just copy and paste this link into your browser https://www.facebook.com/groups/118323255562001/ 💕

Tracy Hughes

thanks Louise, there are a number of other painting you do tutorials on that I am keen to try.... I noticed they are accessed via Skillshare etc.... will you be loading those onto Patreon at some stage do I need to join/pay for skillshare ??

Louise De Masi

When I first started on here 8 weeks ago I decided to make the content different because I realised that some patrons were also on Skillshare. I wanted to be fair to them by providing them with different content. So at this stage, I don't plan on putting the Skillshare classes on here but that may change down the track if I get a lot of people asking the same question.

My paper seems to dry so much faster than yours. I’m barely done with one area and if I go back to dropin more darker paint it starts to bloom because the paper has dried too much to add. How do you keep yours moist for so long?

Louise De Masi

Hi Julie. Hmmmm.....without watching you all I can do is offer my thoughts. You may not be putting enough water on the paper or maybe I'm painting faster than you. You could try 'priming' the paper first. By that I mean paint a layer of water on and let it absorb into the paper until the sheen has gone from the paper. Then wet it again and start to paint. The priming method allows the water to penetrate the surface and middle layers of the paper and that will allow subsequent layers of water to stay wet for longer. Try it and see if it helps you.

Rita Navroth

I have come across the same result, which took me a while to figure out. It has a lot to with the weather condition where you are painting. How warm or cool, the humidity in your area. Is the fan or heater on. All this really affects how long to paper stays wet and also the paint. I have not mastered this at all but I have started to pay attention to conditions while I paint. Water, water... such a trick one to work with, but it's part of the Fun or watercolors. Hopefully one day I will be able to tell just how to work with the water and pigment proficiently. :-)

Carol Noakes

Hi Louise, new member and watercolour painter here, with the image you provide can we print it onto the watercolour paper or is it for a reference? and if i did print it on to watercolour paper would it run? Thanks in advance.

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, Welcome! Thank you for joining my little painting community. I'll message you privately to answer your question.

Denise Bitchener

Hello Louise< I have just completed my 2nd attempt at this little bird. The first time I went too dark and it looked more suitable for Halloween. The 2nd time I used a much lighter touch. I re-watched the whole tutorial and it was amazing by adding a few more tweaks it improved my painting so much. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Louise De Masi

That's great Denise and good to know. Thank you! I painted this bird a few years ago (not this painting, another one) and one of the patrons saw it and asked me to do a tutorial on it so I had to paint another one because I didn't film the first one. I am much happier with this second one. I'm glad you are with yours too.

Nicoline Mann

Hi Louise! The pdf supplies list seems to be for the bluebird painting rather than the Fantail. I tried the docx but need to purchase a program in order to see it. I'm wondering if you could update with the Fantail supplies list in pdf form? Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Nicoline. Whoops, sorry! Thank you for letting me know. I've changed it.

Winnie Chan

Hi Louise, can I use some other green in place of Windsor green ? The greens I have: viridian, sap green, hooker's green, perylene green, phthalo green, permanent olive green.

Louise De Masi

Hi Winnie, that's for mixing the black - try Hookers Green or Phthalo Green.

Mel Johnson

Evening Louise. I am starting to paint the fantail. Your videos are super helpful and I am taking the mess from my first attempt with me. I know now not to use too much water. To watch your video first and carefully rewatch again and again so that I can see what you are doing. Fingers crossed this will result in a painting I am more happy with. :)

Svetlana

Wow, that is actually not a simple tutorial! This is the first time I couldn't make it and will have to start again. Meanwhile I decided this bird I failed will all be black, no white tummy, as I failed to keep it white))

Mel Johnson

Hi Louise. I think I am finished. It definitely shows a huge improvement but still a long way to go.

Louise De Masi

Did I just see it on Facebook? If I did- you've done an amazing job!

Mel Johnson

Yes it was. Thanks so much.

Louise De Masi

Mine is Winsor Green blue shade Renee. Thanks for reminding me. I'll add it to the supplies list.

Renee Howard Cassese

I have a difficult time doing wet on wet techniques on hot pressed paper. The paper dries too quickly. I have taken to only using cold pressed. I prefer Arches and am pretty addicted to it even for practice. But Fabriano Artistico is a close second.

Candace

This was a really good tutorial. I have tried other tutorials from other artists...they are good, however, not as educational as these. Louise you have an amazing teaching style. Very descriptive and thorough. It really makes a difference when learning. Thank you :)

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Candace. I'm glad they are helpful. 💕

Dilini Atapattu

Hi Louise Sorry to bother you but I’m unable to watch this grey fantail tutorial after 1 minute it doesn’t play What should I do?

Louise De Masi

Hi Dilini. If you are using the Patreon app that is probably why you are having difficulty. The app tends to be glitchy particularly if you haven't done all the updates. It's best to log into Patreon using your internet browser and watch the videos that way. I hope that helps.

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I have just finished painting the fantail and I love it. Thank you so much for doing these wonderful tutorials please keep doing them. More animals would be fantastic from different countries like your neighbour NZ.

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I have looked all through your tutorials for the goldfish. I’m wondering if it’s not on the patreon but on skillshare. I would VM love to do it. I have done so many of your Beautiful tutorials and so many people have commented that my art work is now good enough to sell. A lady has ask me to paint 4 New Zealand native birds for her. This is all due to you and your wonderful teaching. Thank you.

Julie Ash

I have tried this bird 3x now. This time I am using Arches 130# cold press. But no matter what I try, I can't get my colors to blend as well as yours. Mine have so many sharp lines around the layers. To add another layer I wet the first layer first, but then the second layer of paint still goes out to the edge of the wet and makes a hard line. So it looks more like a Monet painting than the smoothness of yours. :) Still not mad at it though.

Louise De Masi

Hi Julie, If you get hard edges where you don't want them it's because the paint has drifted to the edge of the water. If you are painting a small area wet on wet, make sure the area you wet is much larger than where the paint will sit so that the paint can't drift to the edge of the water.
