Hi everyone,

I hope you are all safe and well and coping with this pandemic as best you can. The uncertainty of it is difficult for us all.

I went back to the doctor today with my leg. I was greeted at the surgery door by a nurse in full body suit. She had gloves on, a mask and a plastic visor over her eyes. I had to answer questions and have my temperature taken before I could enter. Inside, most of the waiting room chairs had been removed and there was lots of space between those that remained. There were chairs lined up against the receptionists' counter so that patients couldn't get too close. After the visit I had to go to the pharmacy and many of the shops in the shopping centre were closed. It feels surreal.

Update on my leg: two doctors looked at it and they decided a 2nd round of antibiotics was needed. They used a coloured marker to draw around the edge of the infection and told me if it spreads any further I'm to go straight back...sigh. I have to go back on Friday to have it checked again 🤞🏻.

I enjoyed reading all your messages about what was happening in your part of the world so if you have any news I'd love to know.

As far as painting goes - I have completed two Hummingbirds. I couldn't decide whether to paint one flying or sitting so I painted one of each 😳. I'll be working on tutorials of them this week. Yesterday I also did a quick pen and wash lighthouse for the beginners. It's a fun little painting that you can do really quickly with no fussing.

This week I'll be posting my 'sky' learning video and the Chickadee and I'll try and get the little lighthouse tutorial done for you as well. Keeping busy is a good way to carry on in these difficult times.

Thinking of all of you!

Louise

Oh no, I’m so sorry about your leg! Right now is a heck of a time for any medical issues that could be threatening. I mention before that my sister was sick, but I’m happy to report it turned out just to be a cold. She never developed a fever. Otherwise, libraries, and all non essential stores have been told to close, but the only places mandated to close are social gathering places. Gyms, bars, restaurants (some allow take out), and I believe churches. My day to day life has only been affected once so far, which is when my cousin came over to pick up her PS4 and she couldn’t come into the house, I had to hand it to her and stay as far away from her as possible while doing so, and we couldn’t hang out and chat. It’s alien, my house is one where family doesn’t have to knock to come in, they just do. So this change in behavior is saddening. Overall I’m safe, my high risk parents are safe, and we have plenty of toilet paper. I hope everything goes well for you Louise! I sincerely do.

Louise De Masi

Its crazy Emma. I'm glad your parents are safe and your sister is ok. That's a relief. No toilet paper here either but Dom and I have enough.

Mary-Beth

Hi Louise! Please take good care of your leg. Keep it elevated and drink lots of water! I am throughly enjoying all of your posts and lessons as my employer has closed for a few weeks. Working full time leaves little precious time for lessons and painting. Your tutorials and updates truly brighten my days. The most recent being your precious koala class on Skillshare. I live in the thumb area of Michigan, USA. Life has slowed to a crawl and I would give you $100 for a pkg of TP. Lol Strange times indeed! People are thoughtful and kind in my little part of the world and the community always pulls together to help others. Looking forward to the upcoming tutorials and THANK YOU for sharing your beautiful gift!

Robyn

Hi Louise. Thanks for your tutorials here and skillshare. I am shifting house this week and resigned from my employment last week. Good time to stay in the new house in country victoria and paint. Stay healthy.

Kimberly

Oh dear Louise ,sorry about your leg. I hope you heal quickly! I love the the hummingbirds! So nice! My last day at the salon was Wednesday, I plan to be off for two months, hopefully not more. I’ll have so much work cut out for me when I return with lots of grown out hair color roots and mismatch bangs from clients trimming their own 🤭😅. If I have Withdrawals from cutting their hair I will probably be cutting my own and may end up back to work with a pixie cut! 💇🏼

Amy Kenyon

I hope your leg heals Louise! And I hope it’s not painful. I’m in NY and everything is pretty much shut down. I am a nursing student and my classes have been cancelled and now I’m doing majority online. My kids are also home doing online classes. It’s crazy! I do love being home and having my family altogether though. Can’t wait for your next tutorial! Xoxo

Kathleen Braykovich

These hummingbirds are beautiful. I cannot wait to try them out. Louise, please take good care of yourself and stay safe. I hope you get a good checkup on Friday. Thank you for being amazing. :)

Karen Lorenz

I missed the news about your leg if you mentioned how you injured it. Please take care so you heal quickly! THANK YOU for the lighthouse! I eagerly look forward to a tutorial! I love all your work but I think I'm just someone who loves any type of landscape!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Karen and thank you so much for your very kind review on my new koala class. I really appreciate it. 😘💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks Amy. I saw NY was hit hard. Please take care. 😘

Louise De Masi

Thanks Kimberly. I was talking to my daughter last night via text and because the govt yesteday has just shut down all non essential businesses she said ....,"oh no...I had an appointment with my hairdresser this week!" She said she's going to look awful until they re-open...lol. Think of how much your clients will appreciate you! Have a good break and gets lots of painting done.

Louise De Masi

Country Victoria and painting sounds wonderful. You stay healthy too Robyn.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Mary-Beth. Lol...toilet paper is like gold here too. Stay well!

Paula Vescovo

Looking forward to your new tutorials. I am excited about the lighthouse in one and ink. Hope your leg heals quickly. Sounds like the doctors office had things as safe as possible. My husband h

Paula Vescovo

Forget the last part. I was deleting. Anyway I need something to keep my mind busy. It took me two tries but I finished the sunflower. Loving it.

Sarah Bailey

I can’t wait for these new tutorials, I prefer the flying hummingbird but they’re both gorgeous. Can’t wait for the lighthouse! I’m in Ohio, we just got the shelter in place order today. I was supposed to have my (amicable) divorce hearing and close on a house purchase AND move to the new house all in April, and now that’s all up in the air. We’re all hoping we can get this stuff sorted out. Sigh. In the meantime I’m actually pretty happy working from home doing support for our university classes that have moved online quickly. I can spend more time with my partner and our dog and I’m hoping after the rush cools off I’ll even have time to take a lunch break 😝

Noemi

Wow Louise, there are gorgeous, looking forward to work on them. Hope you, Dom and the kids are all well and as much a as possible, away from the madness.

Tina Clark

I hope your leg heals well and soon. It isn't a good time to have doctor's visits. I had a follow up scheduled this week for a minor procedure I had last month, and it was changed to a phone visit. I'm glad. My two dogs went to the groomers today, we just got in, as they are closing after today. Good thing, as they were starting to look a little scruffy! All the best to everyone. May we all stay well and keep painting. Oh, and I love the hummingbirds. And serendipity: I just did a little tapestry weaving of a lighthouse, and thought I would try it in watercolors also. So good timing.

Karen Morris

Oh my, dear Louise. I’m so very sorry about your leg. What a terrible time to be going for checkups. Sounds so surreal there. I live in South Carolina. The kids are still here on the beach gathering for Spring Break against all mandates and advice. I guess we all thought we were invincible at that age but I’d like to believe that they’ll come to their senses soon and come to consider other humans who need their cooperation. Today was the first day I couldn’t get more than half of my grocery order and it is downright scary. Suddenly toilet paper isn’t the only thing I consider Golden. Even Amazon has delayed deliveries and is out of some items. Fortunately, they’ve had all the Winsor Newton paints that I’ve ordered. Lol. Thank you so very much for all your tutorials. Since I’m a new Patreon member I still have so many to enjoy. Please take care of yourself, Louise. I truly hope the antibiotics help heal your leg quickly.

Alli McKinney

Sending healing thoughts your way. I hope you recovery quickly! I also can't wait to see all 3 of these tutorials. My state is going into shelter-at-home tomorrow so I'm going to have plenty of painting time in the coming weeks.

Laurel Frazer

I hope you get well soon! My hubby had surgery on the 26th and is still on iv antibiotics and a wound vac. Homecare visits every other day with follow up visits at the hospitals with various doctors. We were supposed to go in tomorrow but the doctor we were to see just called to say she is quarantined due to being exposed to covid 19. 😞 These truly are extraordinary times, please take care of you and yours. ❤ oh and thank you for all you do.

Pam Causey

Please take care of yourself ok, curious are they taking a culture of it. Only way of knowing the best antibiotic to use. Sure hope you see improvement soon! Hummingbird is lovely. I'm retired but stay real busy with volunteer work. everything shut don except bread pantry once a week so I'm looking forward to having lots more time to learn and paint. Working on pansy of yours I saw on utube right now lol. Hope to start the robin tomorrow . Take care!

Henry De los Rios

Sorry to hear about your leg, hope you get better. You just need some time off, but from I could noticed you are always a very busy lady. Hope you take some time for yourself. God bless

Christine Srikala

Hi Louise, Im in lockdown in Katherine/NT as our borders are closed. ART is my way of relaxing. I'm an ED RN & my 2 cents worth abt your leg. Best to also get a tetanus vaccine if you have not been vaccinated in the past 5 years. If you get fevers / rigours/ fatigue/ swelling/ heat/ throbbing /pins & needles/ cramps, pls see GP asap. If not getting better, you may be resistant to that particular antibiotic, so get that reviewed. Silver coated dressings are good as well (Acticoat/Meiptel Ig). Good luck.

Gina Squitieri

Hi Louise, soak your leg in Epson salt every day 3times a day for 20 minutes each time in very warm water. It will get better. Don't eat meat or dairy or eggs and try not to eat too much oil. Sip throughout the day room temperature turmeric "tea" with ginger, cayenne pepper (blood purifier) and lemon. You are in my fervent thoughts and prayers! Yes, here in California, we are ordered to stay home. Fortunately, unlike many, I still have a job. Funny how the flu has killed almost 500,000, infecting 5 million between October and February and virtually no one makes a peep about it Surreal for sure. I have no idea what's really going on but ... Luke 12:2! On a brighter note, I love that lighthouse painting!! It's adorable! I painted the eucalyptus leaves! They turned out perfect, even if I say so myself. 😁 God bless us all. Love you!! Gina

Zubke

Hallo Louise, ich wünsche dir gute besserung für dein Bein.

Helena Cameron

Hi Louise, the hummingbirds are stunning, the one on the branch looks almost as if it could just step off the paper, it looks so real with the way you’ve painted the shadow next to it, so looking forward to painting it. I’m working on a koala right now, after having done yours and couldn’t decide what to do next of all the great choices you’ve given us, but it may well be the hummingbirds! Take care of your health and stay safe. Thank you , Helena

Louise De Masi

Willkommen Anna, danke für deine freundliche Nachricht. Ich bin froh, dass du hier bist.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Helena. I really enjoyed painting the little one on the branch. It was quick to paint too. I hope you're ok - safe and well.

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Gina. I'll have to get some Epson Salts next time I'm in town.

Louise De Masi

Thank you for the advice Christine. The NT has 5 cases of the virus last time I checked. Stay safe. I think my leg is getting better. Dr's are being cautious.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Henry. It's a good thing I love my work. Stay safe! 😊

Louise De Masi

Thanks Pam. My son is cutting the video on that Pansy painting so I can do a full length version for here. The dr said they may have to take a sample on Friday to send off it's no better. Fingers crossed it will be. I think it's improving every day.

Diana Musso

Beautiful, looking forward to painting them

Lydia Shemain

Louise, hurry and get well. Love both the humming birds, they look easy.

Chantal NUGUES-PERRIN

Hi Louise, feel sorry about your leg...Please don't stand up for too long and rest your leg on a stool to avoid swelling... The atmosphere in France is very peculiar. I live in the country in a small village between Tours and Le Mans and it is very rural with no shop but a café which is closed... I will have to drive 4 miles to get food when there is nothing left in my cupboards, and gendarmes are checking houses to make sure that you are staying home with no contact with your neighbors... I am happy that I found you and the FB group which is so encouraging 😆😆 I will try to make justice to the lovely hummingbird ... Take care of yourself but please don't overdo things ... We all can wait as there is plenty to do on your site 👍😗😗😗

Shari F Sarachan

Hi Louise, I'm so sorry to hear about your leg. I hope you are feeling better soon! And I hope that you and your family are staying safe & well during these worrisome times. I am managing fine but I worry about my daughters. To pass the time, I am currently working on the cardinal tutorial. And I am looking forward to the chickadee video as well. Take care of yourself.

Jacinthe Boudreau

Allô Louise..... I am looking forward for the hummingbirds tutorial....

Jacinthe Boudreau

Oups 😬 wasn’t finished.... 🥰. I am sending you infinite ♾ prayers along your way🙏💫. I

Isatys09

Thank you so much Louise for looking out for us and providing us with more beautiful projects while you are recovering yourself!! Hope you leg will get better soon.

Gina Squitieri

You're welcome. It's actually Epsom ( not Epson, sorry), and I should have said definitely no dairy, but very little meat and eggs and oil ( organic if you can find it). Eating more veggies, fruits (berries especially) and cutting way back on processed sugar and foods and fats, and eating greens, and lentils and brown rice and whole wheat breads and pastas help your liver, pancreas and kidneys which which help your body heal much faster. I hope you don't think I'm a total nut. Plus, you will have more energy and find allergies (if you have them) lessoned if not completely gone. Try it for a week or two. And your Kmart might have Epsom salt online if you can't get it in town soon. Warmly, Gina

Nancy Taylor

Louise, your tutorials are wonderful. I look forward to watching your excellent videos. You are a gift to so many in this difficult time of isolation. I pray your leg heals soon. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. You a definitely a gift to all of us.

I think about you and your leg all the time. It sounds like you are being taken care of. We are all pulling for you. What a time it is; I wonder each morning if I dreamed it all. I so enjoy your paintings but please put yourself first. If you are not up to painting, don't do it just for us. Everyone keep safe and well.

Jeannie Winters

Thank you for these new paintings. As others have said, here, your comfort is in our thoughts. Although we are privledged to enjoy your art, looking after your health is more important than making new postsfor us.

Louise De Masi

Hi Vincent, I pinned the index to the top of the Posts page but it doesn't seem to be pinned if you are using the Patreon app. It should be at the top of the Posts page when you are using Patreon through your web browser. It is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34865676 I also have an index on my website where you can see the paintings of each tutorial. The images are linked back here to the tutorial when you click on them http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index Scroll down to see it.

Thank you, Louise. You treat your patrons very well :)

So sorry to hear you are having trouble with your leg! Going to the doctor is trying enough during normal times. Can't imagine having to go during a pandemic! I'm really looking forward to the hummingbird tutorial. You are working so hard to put out sooo many new tutorials. I'm having trouble keeping up! Thanks so much and I hope you're better soon!

Chez

Upsetting to hear about your leg, I hope it improves very quickly. I am new here and just want to tell you that I enjoy your videos and your teaching method, and look forward to painting along and learning more with you. I love your work. Thank you so much Louise. Take care and I hope you will be better with your leg, sooner than later hopefully.

Momma Cheryl

On a happy note... I'm so HAPPY I found you ! I took your Galah painting class on Skillshare, you're an incredible teacher. I signed up for Patreon and am so happy to see that you have classes coming up on my two fav birdies ever ! Chickadee and hummingbird <3 Thank you, I look forward to learning from you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Trish, welcome and thank you! I'm trying to upload the Chickadee class today but our internet connection keeps dropping out. Hopefully later. 🤞🏻

Dear Louise, I do hope that your leg will heal soon, the antibiotics use up your body's B group, so supplement that one. Just a bit of homespun help. I marvel at the way you are continuing to help us regardless of the pain you must be in. Here in Alaska our schools have gone on-line, my grandson is due to finish school, and the graduation ceremony is probably going to be changed, my daughter is worling a

Margaret B Smith

had some finger problems - my daughter is working in a Pharmacy, so she still has to report for work as it is an essential service, My church has to go on-line. Our group of ladies that get together on Wednesday afternoons to "puddle and paint" at the Senior Center, are unable to continue, so we agreed to phone or e-mail each other to stay in contact and share what we are working on. They are impressed with the way you are tutoring me, and see a difference in what I do. Many thanks again, for your sterling work.

Hi Louise, I live in California, USA and the Governor issued a "stay at home" order on March 19th although San Francisco and surrounding counties were ordered to do so March 17th. I'm immunocompromised so I've been taking precautions since February 27th and just going for doctor's appointments. Our small city, over 200 miles from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, reported their first case in the 0-17 age group. It saddens me to see careless people hitting Flordia and California beaches for Spring Break! I live 30 minutes from the Sequoia National Forest entrance and they've closed too. It's hard to imagine the forest being closed! Running low on TP, but I'm sure huge supplies will be available soon. Praying your leg heals quickly with no complications! Thank you for continuing to put out such quality content, you're a blessing!

Diane Quinn

That leg sounds nasty, Louise. Take some time off painting and just rest. We all want what is best for you. We have plenty to be getting on with....no harm in doing some subjects again until you are fully recovered. Doctor's orders.

Joyce Mcleod

Thanks for your tutorials we are isolating as we are both seniors and my daught er is undergoing Chemo so we are unable to visit her. Painting helps to bring a bit of calm. Hope everyone is coping in these trying times.

Christine Carr

Louise I am so sorry to hear you are having the medical concerns that you are. I’ve recently joined your patreon group and I did not realize you were going through this. I’m no stranger to medical issue, I have many doctors and see them on a monthly basis and they are all switching to a telemedicine type format which my first appointment in that way is next week so I’m not sure what to expect. I’m in the states. More specifically the state of Illinois and it’s scary to hear that Illinois has surpassed all other states at this time with confirmed cases. I was a registered nurse for 16 years until I herniated C5-6 and due to the fusion not fusing and it not diagnosed for a year (even though I kept telling my surgeon something was wrong but all he focused on was accusing me of wanting more pain meds, just ridiculous but that’s a whole other story) and long story short ended up with 2nd fusions and permanent nerve damage resulting in severe chronic nerve pain and the inability to have full use of my right arm ending my nursing career. Unfortunately I had to be placed on disability and live with pain on a daily basis, but between my faith and discovering art, more specifically watercolor has literally changed my life for the better. It decreases my anxiety, lessens depression, and when I’m painting it takes my mind off my pain which has been a life saver. I don’t feel fear or anxiety due to the uncertain circumstances we face today bc I trust that God knows what He is doing and has never failed me yet. So with that I pray everyone is able to find their own peace during such unpredictable and never seen before times we face. Louise I want to thank you for being a huge part of my recovery and peace. I feel God puts individuals in our lives at the most perfect times and finding your YouTube channel was not by accident and I couldn’t be more thankful than that. I also want to thank you for the hummingbird tutorials. I was one of your students that asked and I couldn’t be more thrilled. They are both absolutely amazing and beautiful. My most favorite bird ever. I can’t wait for the entire tutorial to release on patreon but please take care of yourself first bc I hope you know all of us would totally support you taking care of yourself. Now that I’ve written an entire book (I’ve even went back through and edited lol 😂). I tend to be such a detailed oriented person I kinda get carried away sometimes. With that said I am wondering if you have ever dabbled in looses watercolor florals. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the detail, time and meticulous work you put into your florals, I totally resonated with your post on the hummingbird tutorial of previously putting so much detail and trying to fill out every little area bc I have the same type of personality but I love the look of the loose florals I think bc it’s something that I find such a challenge for myself. I am a complete beginner but I do feel that I’m getting better at the loose florals. Initially I tried too hard and always overworked them but I’m finding that just putting pigment to paper and letting it lay where it lays and fluidly laying down the hints of petals etc that they come together so much better. It’s given me a chance to be forgiving to myself knowing that it’s not an exact replication and sometimes that is a nice change of pace for me and I try and balance that with more realistic type paintings. Have you ever done loose florals or ever has an interest in them. I feel you are such an amazing talented artist and would love to see your approach to them. Would you ever consider putting out a tutorial on them? Now that I’ve taken up way too much of your time with my rambling I want to just say thank you and please take care of yourself I will be praying for complete healing 🥰💕

Louise De Masi

Hi Christine, I'm sorry to read that you have had to go through this trauma with your spine and now you live with chronic pain. Our health should never be taken for granted. I'm happy you have painting now to take your mind off it. I share your feelings. Although I haven't had to endure spinal fusion surgery I have scoliosis, spinal stenosis and arthritis in my spine. I live with chronic pain too and like you, painting in watercolour is my escape. It stops me from feeling sorry for myself. I have tried to paint loose florals in the past but I ended up making a mess. It won't stop me from trying again though. I recently bought a book by Ann Blockley. She does beautiful loose, expressive watercolour paintings. I admire her work and I'm devouring her book. So, I'll never say never to loose florals. Thank you for your lovely message. Stay safe and well. 💕

Paula Bush

Louise, I am so sorry that you are dealing with an infected leg...please take care of yourself. I had to stop my Patreon for a little while, but thankfully I am now back! I love your classes on Skillshare and YouTube as well...I painted your Cardinal as a house-warming gift and it was much appreciated. We are shut down here in Georgia in USA, too, and dealing with shortages but people are trying very hard to keep the shelves stocked...unfortunately, people are still meeting in groups in places outdoors, etc. I do NOT understand it! Thank you for all the time you put in for us... love your soothing voice, sweet smile(with a hint of mischief in it), and your fabulous tutorials! You are helping us all stay sane in this crazy time!

Louise De Masi

Hi Paula, it's good to see you back again. I applaud all of the people who work in our supermarkets, and transport our food and all of the health workers and other people who work in our hospitals. I will gladly stay at home to support all of them. It is the least I can do. I don't understand those people either. I am one of the lucky ones though who is able to work from home. I can only imagine how difficult is for all of those people who have lost their jobs. Crazy times but we will get though it if we support one another. 💕

Judith Steevens

I love Anne Blockley too and have her landscape and floral book. She makes it look so effortlessly easy! Thanks for the lovely tutorial, this is how I found you on YouTube!

Sue Hamman

Hello Louise, I hope you are doing well and your leg is healing! I have a question about the upcoming hummingbirds tutorial. I'm placing an online order for some supplies to prepare for doing some of your newer tutorials and was wondering if you used any colors that might be new to what you normally have on your palette. For instance I noticed on the chickadee that raw sienna is listed and that is something I don't think we have used yet so I'm ordering that. Just wondering if there is a new color/(s) for the hummingbirds? Thanks so much for all you do for us! I'm so looking forwards to the hummingbirds! Wishing you every good thing! Sue

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, Thank you! My leg is much better now. I used a few new colours on the Hummingbirds. Perylene Violet, Winsor Orange and Olive Green if my memory serves me well. All Winsor & Newton colours. The orange can be mixed of course- and I only use a tiny bit of it so don't get that if you want to minimise cost. Thanks again!

Sue Hamman

Thank you so much for the info and I'm so happy your leg is better!

Karen Wilson

I’m new to your group and tutorials. Just did my first yesterday - the Koala! Loved doing it! You are so fun to paint with! And I gotta say your outtakes are hilarious!🤣

Diane Key

HELP----Louise, I am a new patron and do not know how to use your site. How do I find a previous post, like the frog, and the line drawing the goes with it?

Louise De Masi

Hi Diane, Welcome! I'll send you a message about navigating the site. The frog will be ready next month.

MJ Martin

Dear Louise, Wishing you the best with getting that leg of yours nice and healed up. As for me still under stay at home quarantine which was extended another month so hopefully I will get back to work here in Wisconsin, USA. I am totally enjoying having found you on YouTube!! What a lifesaver you have been! I did join Patreon and between the two, watch your videos every day. I have learned so much and look back at my old watercolors and am amazed how primitive they look now!! You are a fantastic and gifted artist. I have a long way to go but look forward to continue learning from you. I have had a hard time trying to find Windsor and Newton watercolor tubes, any suggestions? Also, do you find the natural brushes are better than the synthetics? I am so sorry this got so long .

Louise De Masi

Hi MJ, Thank you very much. I am glad you are enjoying the tutorials. Blick Art Supplies sells Winsor and Newton paint I think but you can use Daniel Smith if that's what you prefer. I use Daniel Smith too. A lot of the colours are similar. I try to keep using the same colours as much as possible for the tutorials because I know patrons go out and buy them. I use synthetic brushes too but I do have a preference for natural haired brushes. I find they hold more water and paint and they reshape really well when they are wet. They have good spring in them and they last a long time of you look after them. Stay safe and well!
