Hi everyone,

I hope you're enjoying your weekend.

Here is the Coral Rose tutorial. This rose is not as difficult to paint as the other rose tutorials I have made. I chose this particular rose because you can't see the centre of the flower where all the folds and curves are. I also kept the leaves very simple. I demonstrate how I paint little watercolour droplets on the petals at the end of this video.

I used Winsor and Newton's Rose Dore as the main pink on this rose. You may not have Rose Dore so I have put a little colour swatch sample at the bottom here that you can download. I mixed some Winsor Lemon into Permanent Rose and I got a colour that was very similar. So try mixing one of your bright yellows into a pink that you have if you don't have Rose Dore.

I hope you enjoy it. All the files are attached below. Download them onto your computer and then print the files you need.

I'll add this tutorial to the two indexes as well:

Thanks Louise so loved this tutorial right down to the water drops Julie

Lydia Shemain

Louise, this is so beautiful, really stunning. Thank you.

Chantelle Venter

Yay... Finally I have one of the colours I don't have to purchase lol. Beautiful rose. Can't wait to paint this beauty 😁❤️

Liv

Beautiful rose! Botanical subjects above all, but also birds are my favorite paintings. Thank you ❤️

Katherine Docherty

Lovely tutorial, Can't wait to paint this Rose. Thank you x

Lydia Shemain

Louise, what’s the difference between a wash and a background? Thanks

Louise De Masi

A wash is the wet paint we put on the paper. A wash is what you might use to paint your background. The background is the area around the subject you are painting. You may choose to leave your background plain with no wash on it.

Uliana

Thank you, Louise! Will Potters Pink work for this also?

Louise De Masi

You could try it Uliana. It won't be the same though and be aware that Potters Pink is granulating so your petals will have more texture on them. I have painted a flower with a granulating paint and it turned out ok.

Sharon E Toombs

This is gorgeous Louise. The dew drops amazing. I hope I can paint a fair representation. Thanks so much for all you do!😊

Delores Lopez

Loved this tutorial.I finally have w.n. paints and some decent brushes.I think I will try a painting soon.I am off to a slow start.

Lydia Shemain

That’s so simple but so stunning. I wish I could interpret it in my loose watercolour roses. Love the droplets. Louise, I have difficulty lifting paint, is it because my surface is too wet. When is it the right time to lift.

Louise De Masi

Thenk you! I do too Lydia. I always go in too fast. Then the paint flows back in to where I've taken it off. You have to let it sit until you can see that it is starting to dry. The sheen will diminish slightly. Try then. Don't leave it too long though because if it's too dry you risk adding a bloom with your damp brush.

Shilpa Shah

I’m going to attempt this. I was checking my supplies and I have Rose Dore! I haven’t even used it before 😂. I’m so keen to do this!

Mary Alyce Kronzer

OMG! I've always wanted to learn how to paint water droplets. This was en eyeopener for me to see you do this. BRAVO! I Can't wait to try this on my own.

Tiphanie

Just finish this one, thank you for teaching me all of this techniques ! I love watercolor !!!

Carol Ray

Thank you so much, Louise. I really appreciate the level of detail - this tutorial is a master class. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.

Louise De Masi

I'm not sure but I know the same thing happens with the attachments on Skillshare. You must be logged into Skillshare through your internet browser and sometimes on an ipad the attachments aren't visible. Maybe try logging into Patreon through your internet browser on your iPad and see if that works.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure and thank you very much. I'm glad it's working for you now.

Carol Ray

Hello Louise; I've done this tutorial a couple of times. The first time, I used one of those watercolour cards you paint yourself, and fought the paper every step of the way. I salvaged it using opalescent paints but it looked very little like yours. The second time, I used Arches as you did and the results were night and day. Anyway, like we always say, quality supplies make ALL the difference. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and creativity with us.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Carol. Thank you! Yes they certainly do. When I first started painting in watercolour I used Arches because I read that it was a beautiful paper. I bought the smallest size pads in it. I'm glad I did because I think if I'd used a cheaper pulp paper I would have given up at the start.

Lucia

Dear, Louise, thank you for your great tutorials and tips. This is the first paint of yours I've done. I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I just don't like one of the drops I painted because the shadow is too dark and big. You are a great teacher, Anytime I see your videos there's a new answer to my questions and doubts about watercolour! So thank you so much for the work you do.

Elena Silveira

Tomorow I begin with this rose, so glad I have rose dore and I love this colour.

Rhonda DeHoff

I am going to paint this tomorrow! I am wondering if I could use Dr. Ph Martin's bleed proof white for the water droplets instead of the guache white (which I don't have). Would that work the same?

Louise De Masi

Hi Rhonda, I've never used Dr Ph Martin's bleed proof white. Gouache is an opaque watercolour paint. If Dr Ph Martin's bleed proof white is an opaque watercolour paint it should be ok. You only need a tiny bit of it.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

I must go out in search of rose dore, I can't wait to give this rose a try - and I'm really excited to try the water droplets, those look great! I'm hoping the W & N white ink will work for the highlights in those...

Karin Stanbery

I feel like a dummy. I'm trying to enlarge this line drawing and no matter what I do it won't happen. I have tried saving and resizing and nothing changes. I want this as a larger picture. Help please? I am wondering if anyone else having this issue? Thanks so so much!

Louise De Masi

Hi Karin, enlarging it involves adjusting the settings on the software you are using - which can be confusing if you don't know how. What size is the paper you are going to paint the rose on? I'll see if I can enlarge it to fit on two pieces of printer paper for you. Let me know the size of the paper you'll be working on.

Karin Stanbery

Oh you are fantastic! I am using the Arches 9in x 12in. What software should i be using to make this easier, for future paintings? By the way I enjoy painting with you so much! And thank you for your quick response!

Jennifer Broussard Art

I just finished this! What a learning experience. I didn't have your colors, so I used Mayan Orange and Quin rose. I'm so happy with it.

Louise De Masi

That's great Jennifer. I'm glad and it's great that you were able to substitute colours.

Hemalatha

Hi Louise, I just joined Patreon. I love your detailed tutorials. I want to paint this rose but do not have Windsor Newton Rose Dore . What can I substitute? Thank you !

Louise De Masi

Hi Hemalatha, Rose Dore has pigments PV19 and PY97 in it. Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Red and Quinacridone Rose have PV19 in them. You could mix some yellow into one of those. Or choose a colour you do have that is similar. It doesn't have to be the same as mine. Your rose could be more pink rather than coral. Jennifer in the message above this mentioned that she used Mayan Orange and Quin Rose.

Hemalatha

Thank you, Louise . I will have DS quin red and quin rose. I will use them as a jumping off point.

Tiphanie

I'm doing this one again :) For rose doré, you can say "golden rose" ;) Tiphanie

Dilini Atapattu

Hi louise i really admire your work thank you so much I love your paintings n also I want to knw can I stretch 2 ,3 papers at once and keep them to paint later?

Louise De Masi

Hi Dilini, Thank you! Yes you can. I do that. I stretch a few at a time on different boards and they sit there ready for me for when I want to start painting.

Jennifer

I did not have rose dare, so I used quin red and new garbage, not bad. My first attempt was not too bad. Will paint another using one of my roses . Thank you Louise

Louise De Masi

Thanks Jennifer. I'm glad you were able to substitute colours ok.

Wendy Kelcey

I really enjoyed painting this and loved the water droplets! I’ve posted it the group on FB. Thank you so much Louise! I learned a lot! 👍

Lindy Hawthorne

Im giving this one a try Louise. What should I do if...... when painting the front turneddown petal I applied the darker paint to disperse into the petal. However once I finished applying the paint I realised it was a little too thick and not spreading out properly...how do I fix that little problem please ?. Im too scared t o add more water as it will bloom/backwash. Do I just try to get it off and start again ?. Thank you. Im learning so much from you. Very happy.

Lindy Hawthorne

how do I find that group please ?. I did find Louise's FB page but I cant see any students postings. Thanks

Louise De Masi

It's here Lindy: facebook.com/groups/118323255562001 Thanks! 💕

Wendy Kelcey

Hi Louise. I got an email reply that was meant for Lindy. Oops!

Wendy Kelcey

Sorry Louise. Now I see what happened.

Louise De Masi

Hi Lindy, I'm glad. Thank you! If you put it on too thick on damp paper and the paint doesn't move or drift with the water you should be able to soak up the thick paint with your damp brush (as long as the paint and paper is still damp). Then rewet the paper, thin your paint a little with water and try again.

Leah

Hi Louise,
