Hi everyone,

I wanted to show you a quick look inside a watercolour book I recently bought myself. It’s called 'Painting Portraits and Figures in Watercolor by Mary Whyte.' It's published by Watson-Guptill Publications.

Mary is a highly accomplished American watercolour artist. This is a beautiful book with lots of information about painting in watercolour. There’s information about mixing colour, colour harmony, planning and painting backgrounds, composition and design and lots more. There are a few painting demonstrations too. I love that Mary has devoted an entire chapter to watercolour edges and their importance. I want to focus more on edges in my own work. I have always placed my attention on the internal edges of the subject I am painting and I neglected to think about the external edges of my subject. I’m waking up in that regard and artists like Mary have opened my eyes. Anyway - I just wanted to pop in and share this with you.

Have a beautiful day/evening.

Louise

Thank you for the recommendation. My children always complain they don’t know what to get me for Christmas- now I’ve got a suggestion!

I just read this wonderful book. She is very encouraging to beginners and more practiced painters alike. She has another book you may enjoy called, “An Artist’s Way of Seeing”. It is a book about her journey as an artist and also has lots of encouragement and food for thought. I love her work and both of these books. Great additions to any watercolorist’s library.

Thanks for sharing your new book with us, Louise! I feel that I have so much to learn from you, on animals, birds, flowers, etc, that it will be a long time before I want to get into trying human figures (if ever!), but I hope you enjoy this new direction!

Thanks so much Louise. It means a lot to have a good reference recommendation. I'm looking forward to purchasing a copy.

Jay

IM e cited to take a look...I was able to request it from my library... I also discovered a wonderful new book this week. I saw a copy at my local art center and just had to buy it. The title is PAINTING WATERCOLOR FLOWERS THAT GLOW by Jan Kung.

Jan Richards

SOrry...wasn’t finished. The authors name is JAN KUNZ (autocorrect took over!). I know this post is about portraits, but this book recommendation is all about light and shadow...and I believe it’s universal in our practice.

Lacri Fine Art does very well on Patreon and was using Vimeo...they tried to hold her videos hostage for more money, gave her a week to upgrade. She dropped them like the thugs they were. Just be careful and store everything on your own drives or elsewhere. I'm sure you can ask her about it, she's very open and social, and very nice.

Robin

Breatht taking! Thank's Louise!

Thanks for letting me know Zarah. Mine are all safe on some hard drives here at home.

Thanks Jan. I'll look it up. I love good watercolour books.

Eleanor

Thanks. That was interesting.

Looks a beautiful and very useful book to have - thanks for giving us a taster! On a page you held open for a bit I read quickly what I think said 'artists don't see the world as it really is' something like that - how true! But I think we are lucky in that respect.

Thank you Louise, I appreciate your suggestions. I have an idea for 2021 to expand my artistic learning and skills. I'm not sure what that entails yet, but I want to challenge myself and make good use of my time. I really want to advance my skills and practice regularly.

I had to get this book and I love it. Thanks for the recommendation. It is really helping me see portraits and subject versus backgrounds in a different light. Gracious of you to share the work and advice of another artist. Thanks for sharing your talent and advice with us.

I also just had to buy this beautiful book. At first I kept thinking I wish I had that much talent in my little finger, but ultimately it has motivated me to start sketching and learn the basics of the human form. I have been using the book Drawing the Head & Hands by Andrew Loomis to guide me. Louise, as always, thank you for your guidance and suggestions.

Katie Belden

I too just recently purchased this book and it has been invaluable and inspiring!

Annabelle Zamora

Louise you really are an inspiration! always looking forward to learn even more, thanks for sharing.

Mary Whyte is an amazing artist. Portraits really capture a moment in time.

I would really love to have lessons on figure and portrait drawings. I wondered if you had any suggestions or someone you follow? I try learning from books, but I am a way more visual learner.

Louise De Masi

Hi Catherine, This weekend I completed a painting of a little boy from behind. I love it and I filmed it all. I'll be making a tutorial of it. I also plan to do some portrait classes next year. It's something I want to learn so I'll share my learning here on Patreon.

Catherine Kuehnis

Thank you so much for your response. I can't wait for your tutorial!
