Hi everyone,

Here's a quick look at a book I bought recently that was recommended by one of you - thank you Margaret!

It's called 'Color Choices- making color sense out of color theory' by Stephen Quiller. It's published by Watson Guptill Publications. I bought mine from the Book Depository (free delivery).

I'm loving it. If you want to understand colour theory better it has some great information in it and it is easy to understand. It's a good book to add to your library.

I was so inspired by what I read in one chapter that I painted these Magnolias recently with only two colours. I can see the information in this book having a great impact on my future paintings.

Today I'm working on a tutorial of the Magnolias below.

Got it not too long ago. Looks good. Magnolias are just starting to blossom here in the pacific NW. Perfect timing for a tutorial, whoohoo!

Christine Carr

Absolutely beautiful magnolias. I just recently bought one of Stephen Quiller’s extensive color wheels that is laminated to hang on my craft wall. I love it and have learned so much from his take on color theory.

Thank you for the book recommendation. I’m really enjoying your tutorials and I’m always amazed at the beautiful colour choices you make. That is still something I struggle with and it’s keeping me from painting my own subjects. I just don’t know where to begin. I’m learning a lot from you, so thanks!

Renee Howard Cassese

Gorgeous painting. I've heard this book recommended before but never looked at it. Worth a peek. Thank you for sharing that.

Thanks for the book recommendation. Your magnolia painting is beautiful as are all your paintings! Learning so much from you even though I am not new to watercolors. It's a continuous, wonderful journey!

Jennifer Nicholson

Thank you Louise for the recommendation i will be ordering it. The Magnolias are stunning, cannot wait for the tutorial.

I have been to Creede Colorado many times in our RV. It is the most beautiful part of Colorado I have ever seen. I have seen Stephen Quiller's property from a distance of course. He teaches a very exclusive workshop in Creede at a very exclusive Ranch Club. It is my dream to go to it someday. One of my watercolor instructors here in Texas is a friend of Stephen's and she has studied under him as well. I have ordered this book! Thanks for the recommendation.

Sara Farrington

This magnolia painting is beautiful, I look forward to doing it. I am also excited about the peony work. Thank you!

Trish Hawrys

Love your limited pallet magnolia painting 💞 I have this book as well and really need to spend more time studying it.

Vee

The book certainly seems to be a must have - thanks for your input.

Vee

Meant to also say that I cannot wait for the magnolias - they are absolutely stunning! I have so many of your other tutorials to still do, but think I will tackle the magnolias first.....can't wait!

Debra Kay

I happen to have this book, I've had it so long it is a hardcover book. Do they even make those anymore ha-ha. It is definitely a keeper! Thanks Louise for all you do.

Jenn Witlox

The magnolias look beautiful. Looking forward to it 💜

Marion Preston

I can't wait for this tutorial, looks fab!

Raiven Manselle

Thank you Louise! I love this book and I too am eagerly awaiting the beautiful magnolias!

I would love to try a monochromatic painting that is more detailed than loose, I have to confess loose is not a preferred style of watercolour for me. Painting with different intensities of a single colour seems like a good place to try to understand what feels like really complicated theory and pigment fears to focus solely on value? Xx

Nettie Moss

It looks to be such a useful addition to my ever growing library! Thank you for the flip through Louise - and your painting with only 2 colours is amazing!

Zoe Lau

Louise, would you suggest other color to use to replace Winsor green blue shade to paint the flower? Coz I don't have this color. Thx

Louise De Masi

Winsor green blue shade pigment code is pg7. Daniel Smith's Phthalocyanine Green is also pigment code pg7. W and Newton Cobalt Turquoise Light is similar to look at but a different pigment code. Also Viridian is somewhat similar with a different pigment code. I'd use one of those if I didn't have Winsor Green.

Zoe Lau

Thank you. Looking forward to trying this beautiful magnolia😊

I bought that book and now with your review , I can’t wait to practice . Thanks ! 🙏🏼

Pascale

Ah thank you even if this book is in English I bought it and it is beautiful :) Because I still do not know which colors to use when I want to paint from my own photos ... my eyes identify too many colors I think ... and I was wondering, Louise if you had made a subject on this concern of choice of colors if one wants to try to paint a subject of a photo that one has taken? Thank you in advance for your answer :) <3 <3

Louise De Masi

Hi Pascale, my pleasure. Using colour is a broad subject that I couldn't answer in a single video and most artists use a combination of instinct and knowledge about colour theory. I plan to create videos that incorporate some colour theory into them so piece by piece we'll be able to build more awareness about it.

Pascale

Thank you so much Louise <3

Eleanor

So cool. I have the book, but never read it. Now I am inspired to read it! I look forward to you magnolia tutorial. <3

Hi Louise, I recommended this book in a discussion on useful books started by one of your students on your FB student page. I keep mine handy as I often refer to Quiller’s colour wheel. I’ve had it a long time, and initially didn’t know enough to really appreciate the content. Thanks for your review, I

Margaret Roberts

i’ve had this book for a long time, and thanks to your review, will now go back and make better use of it. Thanks for the magnolia tutorial, which I’m going to do soon. I love that you are incorporating colour theory and painting techniques into your tutorial paintings. I’m learning so much more than I would just copying pretty paintings. Your work is gorgeous, and you are a great teacher.

Louise De Masi

Thank you very Margaret and thank you for recommending the book. It is influencing the way I paint now. It has certainly opened my eyes as far as thinking more about colour schemes and mixing colours. It has a lot of great information it. I have a new simple (beginner) tutorial coming soon where I paint some more leaves but this time using a triadic colour scheme.

Margaret Roberts

I’m glad you’ve found it helpful. Your lovely magnolias are next up for me. I’ll also be looking forward to your triadic tutorial.

Mary Ann Lowrance

I gifted myself that book in February and I love it. I'm lost when I look at his color wheel. Since the colors he mixes are so beautiful why ALL the colors? Makes me wish I was in an artist's only book club!! I'm certain to be missing something.

Louise De Masi

I agree. It's a bit confusing with all the colours. I find the colour wheel helpful when I'm trying to find the true complementary of a particular colour. I also love the painting examples he shows using a specific colour scheme.

Ginger Kipp

Great book thank you Louise

Augusto Machado

It's really great! Thank you Louise, I bought it and leved it.

Chantal A

Thank you, Louise! I must say: your use of colour is just beautiful. You have a natural talent. Since I am learning, I will definitely look into this book.
