Hi everyone,

Here is the Leaf Study tutorial.

If you are fairly new to painting in watercolour take your time with this tutorial and paint the leaves over and over until you paint some that you are happy with. I've listed all the colours I used on the Supplies List as always but experiment with your colours. Try different combinations and see what you like. I've positioned them on the line drawing so you can make a finished painting out of this if you want to or just use it as a study painting.

The leaf in the bottom left corner has an angry face on it because of the holes in it. I didn't realise until I started painting it. Turn the leaf or the painting upside down if it bothers you 🤭.

I've been uploading this video for 9 hours 🥺 - that was a marathon and a half. That's not happened before so I don't know what the problem was. We are wondering if it has anything to do with the floods we've had here on the east coast.

All of the files you need are attached below my message here.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Louise, I really enjoyed doing this painting. I've been struggling with wet in wet and I found this was a great lesson for wet in wet. So much so that I'm very happy with my painting which is a rarity indeed. So, thank you very much I feel I have more confidence now.

Louise De Masi

That makes me very happy to know. Thank you Colleen. 🥰

Mahira

oh I Can't wait to get started. thank you.

sarah

Hi Louise, I am intrigued to know why and how you choose the colour of the base (first) layer? What is your thinking process/ criteria?

Louise De Masi

Hi Sarah, I look for the lightest colour I can see and I choose a colour that is similar. I don't try to match colours exactly as I see them on my reference photo. It's more important to match the value or how light or dark the colour is. I look for the lightest colour on each leaf and then the other colours will sit on top of that. I leave the first wash showing in the lightest areas of the leaf as I build up the other colours/values.

Tx. Make sense.

Sylwia Waśniewska

Hi Louise, I am new to Your channel and to watercolor art. Just wanted to ask, why you picked a greenish, quite light color for the shadows? On the photo they seemed much darker. Thanks for a great tutorial, you explained everything and it’s very helpful! Sylwia

Louise De Masi

Hi Sylwia, I used colours that I already had on my palette for colour harmony. I didn't want to paint the shadows as dark as the shadows on the reference photo because I think it would have overpowered the leaves. A dark colour there would draw the eye and I wanted the attention on the leaves, not the cast shadows. Thank you!

Hi Louise I just wanted to let you know that I have perused countless tutorials and demos from a number of people on Patreon, YouTube and skill share, but you are hands down the absolute best. I hope you love doing these tutorials for us, because I know all that subscribe love that you do them.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much for you kind words Sonja. They mean the world to me. ❤️

Peggie Watterson

Hi Louise I recently joined and find your tutorials to be excellent in UK we have a very different eucalyptus. Round pale grey green leaves. I'd love to see your trees

Linda

I’m watching this tutorial as I paint my own Eucalypt branch. Enjoyment plus, Louise🥰.

Elaine

Thank you so much Louise, the leaves are gorgeous. Hope you are doing okay with all the floods.

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Elaine. Our home is ok where we are - thank you! 💕

Elaine

That’s good to hear 💕

Louise De Masi

It's the last one Sharon. Sorry I had it named wrong.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Louise, this one was really relaxing to watch, I love the subtle differences in shape and color of the leaves. As we are in Spring now I'll have to wait until Fall to gather up some Oregon maple leaves I'd like to try, but for now I'll try your eucalyptus leaves - we had lots of those when we lived in California! Thanks for your nonstop output of work, I think you deserve more time off than you give yourself. I always feel as if I will never be able to catch up with all of your tutorials - and I hope to do them all! 💜💛💚

Kim Schmidt

Hello, I like how something simple can make a beautiful painting. And the face is a happy accident. Thanks

Cynthia Keith

Beautiful work Louise. We are going to construct a bathroom and I thinking k I may paint the leaves... they will bring in a spot of colour and a calmness.... thanks for all your time you put I up your tutorials. Your quality is excellent!

Cynthia Keith

So for the dreadful word drop ins...

Zoe Lau

Sorry, I cannot find the reference photo for this tutorial.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Zoe for letting me know. It's there now. I forgot it yesterday.

Holly Watson

I love this painting so much, thank you, Louise! I can't wait to try it!

Kathryn

Hi Louise. Have you ever used Crescent, Fredric Arcival , or Canson Montreal watercolor boards?

Julia Hales

I love this idea. I've just been out to collect leaves from my garden and I'll give it a go tonight. Thank you again for another beautiful tutorial.

Gale McKiddy

This is a wonderful tutorial, as I love autumn leaves. Our leaves often have a lot of bright burnt orange. If I want to enhance the burnt sienna with a bit of orange, which color would you recommend?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Gale. I do too. I'd use a transparent orange if you have one or mix your own from a transparent red and transparent yellow.

Jude Wiegele

Hi Louise, Today I finished this painting of the eucalyptus leaves. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this tutorial. I have learnt such a lot from your teaching. I am delighted with the final outcome and want to thank you very much. It is always such a pleasure to do one of your tutorials Louise. I wonder which one I will do next. Can't wait!

Louise De Masi

That makes me very happy. Thanks so much Jude. 💕
