Hi everyone,

This is part 1 of the Orchids tutorial.

Part 2 of the Orchids tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/61247312

All of the files you need to complete this painting are attached below my message here.

I've included plenty of progress photos to help you. Like always, take your time with the painting. I completed this painting over a few weeks......so don't rush it.

As you may know I've not had a good start to the year because I am very sick with Covid. I completed this tutorial in December before I got sick. Thank you so much for all of your kind wishes on social media. It means the world to me that you have been thinking of me 😘. This is day 9 now where I've been feeling horrid. I am double vaxxed but I am also an asthmatic so it has hit me pretty hard. The relentless coughing has caused me to lose my voice so I have been unable to work on editing any new tutorials. I tried to do some painting but I'm also quite shaky because of the increase in Ventolin doses I have to take so that hasn't been very successful. To occupy myself while I recover I've been writing a post about how I choose my colours for my paintings. I'll post it here on Patreon when I finish it.

I hope you are well! I can't wait to feel better and get back to normal.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Louise. I have a question: how do you decide when to leave a lost edge? It looks beautiful on this painting but it would have not been intuitive to me to leave those lost edges. Any suggestions on how to best use lost edges? Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Sandra, lost edges are really about choice rather than rules. I usually use them to let one area rest while another takes the focus. If everything has a hard edge, the painting can feel busy, so I’ll soften or lose edges where I don’t want the eye to stop. A good starting point is to ask yourself, “Where do I want the viewer to look first?” Keep edges sharper there, and allow them to disappear in supporting areas. With practice, it becomes more instinctive than planned.

Thank you for your prompt response. I also just realized that someone else had asked the same exact question previously, my apologies for the repeat question. Thanks again.

Laura Heisler

Louise, thank you for sharing such amazing knowledge. I was glad to see in newer posts you and your husband are recovering well from the first of the year! I'm wondering if you discuss WHERE to use lost edges in a particular tutorial or post? I love the look and would like to incorporate it in my work, but am a little unsure where to use it? Is it to move a section to the back?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Laura. I use lost edges in the Goat tutorial I also use them in The Jacket tutorial. Yes it is used to create some depth you can also use lost edges on the areas that aren't near your focal point. You use hard edges around your focal point to draw the eye. The areas away from the focal point can have some soft and lost edges. Also when you paint hard edges all the way around the external edge of your subject it can make your subject look flat. Adding a variety of soft, hard and lost edges in your painting makes for a more lively painting. I don't have a specific tutorial where I focus specifically on lost edges but that is something I can add to my list of things to do so thank you for asking about it.

Monika Tawngdee

thank you, I was just wondering about this.
