Hi everyone,

Here is another seascape tutorial for you.

I'm still learning to paint seascapes myself so I think this is a good tutorial for intermediate painters and perhaps beginner painters with experience.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I used Antwerp Blue for the water but you can use a different blue if you don't have it: French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue or Prussian Blue are three substitute examples.

I included a scan of my finished painting to download along with a photograph of my finished painting. The photograph is a closer indication of the colours of my painting than the scan is. The scan tends to alter the colours slightly.

The reference photo was taken by Jan Huber and I downloaded it from Unsplash website here: https://unsplash.com/photos/PNnv3FMI5gE

I hope you enjoy painting it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Louise! I'm getting ready to paint your boats on still water. Could you tell me the size of your finished painting excluding the white border? Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol. It's 25cm by 37cm excluding the white border.

Doris Dickenson

I love this painting! I love the way you go about achieving the look. A question or two about stretching the paper, if you would be so kind to share a little bit of your expertise. When you staple your paper to the gatorboard and then later cut the picture off of the gatorboard, doesn't that leave holes and knife marks on the gatorboard. Then, when you place a new paper over that spot and start to paint, doesn't that make strange bumps and dents on the new painting? I appreciate your help so much.

Louise De Masi

Hi Doris, thanks very much. Yes the staples leave little holes in the gator board but it does not affect the use of the board or put any bumps in new paintings. I am still using boards that I bought in 2015. They look the worse for wear now but are still useable. I am careful when I use the knife when I cut through the gummed tape. There is a little air pocket against the edge of the watercolour paper and I angle the knife to cut through that.

Doris Dickenson

Thank you for your response. I am excited to start using my new gatorboard as an artboard I can easily handle, twist and turn as I paint. It is so lightweight. I thank you also for sharing your experience and talent with us.

Jean Andhomer

Thank you for this! Looking forward to it ❤

Hi Louise. Thank you for this painting. I know were this lake is. I am living maybe 15 kilometers away from this 😊. And it is really beautiful there. I am painting this in my next free day. Happy greetings from switzerland.

Hi Louise! I love this tutorial. I grew up 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean in Florida (USA), but now live in the landlocked state of Tennessee, so this painting is very nostalgic for me. I'm always amazed at how you can take what appears (at first) to be a very ordinary reference photo, then pick out the parts you want to paint, and turn it into something so beautiful! You're amazing!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Jayeeta. I'm much better now. You take care too.💕

Louise De Masi

How wonderful! I'm so surprised you recognised it. What a beautiful place to live. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Carol. I wanted a fairly simple photo - nothing too challenging and this one caught my eye. 😘

Maura Leusder

This is beautiful! I’m happy you’re feeling better! Could you share how you photograph your finishes work? The colors look so accurate and the background is always crisp white. I find it very difficult to photograph my paintings without the paper looking grey or beige.

Alison Hendry

Breakfast mesmerization. I was fascinated by how little you did to get those soft amazing waves in the water below the boats and reflections. I kept waiting for something and then went wow! They are already done! Good learning point for me, I fuss too much. So glad you are still using the rubber pickup. Made me smile. When the corners get too mucky I just cut them off. Thanks for this one. Inspired me to try a seascape again.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Alison. I fuss too much as well sometimes. I'm trying to stop. 😝

Debra Broido

Well it looked pretty easy until you got to the reflection. I will need to print out the reference photo to see what you see. Glad you are feeling better.

Nancy Guenther

Thank you for this, Louise. I really needed a water tutorial!
