Hi everyone,

Here is the Willie Wagtail tutorial.

In this tutorial I mix some black and I layer it over a lighter more colourful underwash and I allow the lighter under wash to show through in a few places.

When I work with black subjects I look carefully at the subtle variations in tonal value that I can see and I also look for hints of other colours that I might be able to include.

The reference photo I used for this painting was taken by a friend of mine, Roger Fance. Roger has kindly offered to allow you to use his photos as reference for your paintings.

The link to his photo site is below. All he asks in return is that you credit him if you share your painting anywhere and like his Facebook and Instagram pages.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Louise, thank you so much for the progress photos. That is really helpful. I’m thinking I’m about halfway done now, but will probably go back over a few things on the bird. I’m so proud of the progress I’ve made from doing your tutorials. Sometimes I run into things that are difficult or challenging for me, but you do such a nice job of breaking things down. It also helps that you show us your “mistakes” or remind us that we might need to completely dry an area and rewet because we weren’t fast enough (which happens to me, but not as often as it used to). I’m being much kinder to myself, and not feeling so frustrated when something doesn’t go exactly as I’d hoped. Most of the time, no one would know except me. I’m starting to look at your intermediate and even some of the advanced tutorials with more confidence. You remind me so much of when I was struggling with math (I think I’ve said this before), and I felt like it was something I couldn’t grasp. Then I got a teacher who knew how to break it down so it made sense, and that made all the difference. Those teachers are rare, and such a gift. Thank you for being that kind of teacher. ❤️

So excited for this one, thanks Louise ❤️

Linda McKendrick

Cant wait to try this one - would love to add him to some of your flowers (am currently working on a combined galah and protea composition) Does anyone have a suggestion for me? Also just completed apple blossons with bluebird and fushia's with hummingbird) ??

Karen Mill

I love that idea of combining two elements. Great idea!

Linda

Thanks, Louise and, Roger. 👍🏻🌹

I am new to your tutorials and must say I love the way you use the photograph as a 'reference' and aren't slavish about it. The question I have is why didn't you use masking fluid for the white spots on the head?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Jim. I'm not a huge fan of masking fluid. I find the area left behind from the mask nearly always looks contrived and awkward. I usually only use it if there's no other way of doing it. If I can manage without it I will.

Janet Brown

Hi Louise. Thank you for another lovely painting. I am new to watercolour. I am used to detailed animla portraits in coloured pencil, pastel and oils so I am struggling with the urge to add details.

Louise De Masi

Hi Janet, I sent you a direct message because I couldn't find your comment here. I get the soft press paper from Parkers Fine Art Supplies in Sydney. I have to buy it online because I don't live in Sydney. They will ship it to you. Painting in watercolour isn't easy but don't give up. Once you get a feel for it there is no other medium like it. It's magical and it's a joy to use. It just takes practice and persistence.
