Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Freesias tutorial.

Part 2 of the Freesias tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/74202225

Patience is required with this one. It's a not a quick painting so take plenty of breaks when you paint it.

I used a limited palette of only 4 colours and Arches cold press watercolor paper.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I've included plenty of progress photos to help you.

I hope you enjoy painting it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Ceci Melendez

Louise, I just finished this tutorial and loved it! I have two questions: 1) I see that Hookers green was only used to mix the gray. Is there a reason for selecting this color to mix with the magenta for a gray instead of mixing the three primaries? 2) I loved the concept of lost edges. I’ve read composition books where they mentioned the importance of edges but never knew how to implement it for watercolor. Do you have additional videos on when, where or how to incorporate lost edges in a composition? Thank you for a wonderful tutorial!!!!

Louise De Masi

Hi Ceci, There was not a strict technical reason for that choice. It was more about keeping the mix simple and predictable. In watercolour, the fewer pigments you mix, the cleaner and more controllable the result usually is. Mixing three primaries can work, but it often takes more adjusting and can get muddy more quickly. Hooker’s Green already sits across blue and yellow, so paired with a magenta it naturally drops into a soft, useful neutral. It really comes down to artistic licence. If another mix gives you the grey you want, that is just as valid. I don't have a tutorial that focuses specifically on where or when to place lost edges. For me, it becomes intuitive once you understand how they are made. After that, it is about choice. I tend to use them where I want the eye to rest less, where forms turn away, or where I want a softer transition. There is no fixed rule. Once you know how to create them, you can respond to what the painting needs and decide where they feel right. Thanks!

Yes!!!! I’ve been waiting for this one!! Thank you Louise! 💕😃

Janet

Hi Louise. Love this painting! I just got to near the end of Pt.1 and it's going pretty well. Do you think the background would still work if I added it after the entire painting was done? My backgrounds sometimes get out of control and I don't want to ruin it now. I really want to include it but not yet.

Louise De Masi

Yes I think that would work ok Janet. If you don't want to do the background splash you could probably leave it off all together.

Janet

I decided to leave it off. I finished it last night and, on the whole, I'm pretty happy the way it is. You mentioned in the video that if you did it again you would include more lost edges in the top flowers. I completely agree; I've fallen in love with lost edges and I find myself looking for ways to include them in every painting I do. They just give everything a more "painterly" feel. Such a subtle thing and yet so powerful!

Louise De Masi

Me too. That's an excellent description of them Janet - subtle but powerful. I'm glad you're happy with your painting. 💕

This is so very beautiful......I can even experience their fragrance! It will be tricky for me, but just cannot resist trying my hand at these beauties. Thank you so much, dear Louise!

Happy New Year's! I have just finished part 1 and do not see the link for part 2. My email for "part 2" also brings me back to part 1.

Louise De Masi

Happy New Year Nancy. Thanks for letting me know. I've just put the link to Part 2 in my message below the video above.
