Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! Thank you for all of your Christmas and New Year messages. I loved reading them ❤️. I hope we can all get more time to relax and paint this year.

I spent December catching up with all the editing I needed to do and I managed to get everything completed by the afternoon of the 31st December. There were 7 tutorials I needed to voice-over and I was determined to start the new year with a clean slate so I was pleased to get them all done even though it was down to the wire. So here is the first tutorial of 2023.

I used a limited palette of only 4 colours when I painted this woodpecker. I made a few errors when I was painting and I'll show you how I corrected them in this tutorial.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. The reference photo was taken by Vincent Van Zalinge on Unsplash. Here is the link to download it: https://unsplash.com/photos/b0NFKB2yCmc

I will put this tutorial on the tutorial indexes so you can find it easily. The links to the indexes are below.

Happy painting!

Louise

❤️

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I loved painting this little woodpecker! He's so bright and vibrant. I appreciated that you shared your process and "mistake" with us. It was a great way to learn how you approach "recovering" from one. Along the way, I made my own mistake (painted the black feathers too far up the cheek and under the eye) and was able to come back from it and not stress over it. It turned out really well. I love painting all of your birds. Thank you for all of your tutorials! I'm eager to see what you have planned for 2023.

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Meghan, I'm glad! Thanks so much. 💕

Nancy Guenther

This tutorial was so enjoyable. It was really helpful to see how you saved the branch! I may watch that bit again! I love how my woodpecker turned out.

Shelly Solle

Louise, what is a substitute for transparent yellow?

Louise De Masi

Hi Shelly, Transparent Yellow is a cool yellow so if you have a cool yellow replace it with that. If you're not sure- let me know what yellows you have.

Shelly Solle

Nevermind, I found it. Not sure how I overlooked it but I did. Thank you and have a super day.

Michelle Gibson

This tutorial was very helpful in helping me learn how to correct mistakes. My woodpecker turned out phenomenal! More than pleased with it. I even bought a little plate for my very own Black mixes!

Sonja Mills

Giving this a go today. I’m always nervous when trying a painting the first time. Does anyone else feel like that?

Louise De Masi

I feel like that with every painting I start Sonja. The fear of failure is always in the back of my mind. I remind myself whenever I start a new painting to enjoy the process of painting and let go of the outcome. I hope you enjoy it. 🥰

Leslie Rinaldi

Yay! Happy 2023! Love all your bird lessons!

Joy Wright

Thanks Louise, Happy new year. Question on your black pallet made from the blue and sienna - is this a dry pallet or just thick but wet?

Margaret B Smith

Dear Louise, I trust you had a happy Christmas & New Year. May your New Year be memorable and in the best possible way. Thank you for all you do.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Thanks, Louise, the woodpecker looks like great fun to try! Now that you're finally caught up I hope that you can schedule in more time off for yourself, you really work too hard!!! 💜💛💚 Lydia

🎉 Happy New Year Louise! This looks like a great project to do and thank you for all the hard work you put into what you love to do, it shows. I'm super happy for you that you accomplished all that you set out to do, what a great feeling that is. I hope your holidays were as amazing as you are!! May 2023 be a wonderful year for both you and Dom! 💜🧚‍♀️

Louise De Masi

Thanks Joy. Happy New year to you too. It started out thick and wet when I mixed it but by the time I used it it was dry. I pick it up with a wet brush.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Margaret. I did and I hope 2023 is a great year for you too. ❤️

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Desiree. Only the best wishes for you too. 💕

Carol Barnard

Hi Louise Happy New Year to you. Loved this tutorial thank you so much. Can i ask the name of the palette you are using and is it ceramic or plastic.

Louise De Masi

Happy New Year to you too Carol. Thank you! It's a plastic palette- John Pike Big Well palette.

Renee Howard Cassese

Happy Healthy 2023 to you! This was a challenge! I messed up a few spots--but paint and learn. I will try it again soon.
