Hi everyone,

This is a tutorial where I enhance a watercolour painting with Derwent Graphitint pencils.

I've separated it into Part 1 and Part 2 because it's quicker for me to export and upload videos if they aren't too large.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/77517661

I've included plenty of progress photos for you. They are attached below my message here with all of the other files you'll need to complete the painting.

I hope this painting reminds you a little of summer and I hope you enjoy painting it.

Louise

💚💙

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Thank you. I am interested in finding out how you get the images for your paintings. Do you use a scanner or a camera?

jk.art.studio

I was just in the Bahamas and saw something similar while taking a picture of one of their wild chickens in the brush 🐓 so painting this will remind me of my awesome vacation cruise! ❤️👍😂

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, I use a Mustek scanner to scan the painting- you'll see the scan attached in the documents. I also take a photo of my painting and provide it as a download because sometimes the colours are enhanced slightly on the scan. The colours of the painting are more natural in the photo.

Louise De Masi

Wonderful! Lucky you holidaying in the Bahamas! Thanks Jeannie.

Thank you for this beautiful lesson. We have this Morning Glory or Goats foot, its also known by, on our sand dunes too. I've taken many photos of this plant to paint in the future. Also Pigface is another, especially when flowering. 🌻🦋🙏

I live in Naples Florida and those plants scatter the beach so thank you.

Hi Louise, I loved this tutorial and can tell the Graphitint pencils will come in very handy. Can you tell me what kind of pencil sharpener you used to get such a sharp point? I have an electric sharpener and two little hand sharpeners from an art supply store, the latest being a two chamber Kum sharpener. None of them give me a nice point. Thank you so much for this brilliant tutorial.

Louise De Masi

Hi Nancy, I have a Mitsubishi KH20 2000 machanical sharpener.

Nancy Guenther

Thank you so much, Louise. That’s very helpful!

Sue Pittel

Hi, :Louise. I asked about the pencil sharpener in another text. No need to reply since I found the answer here. Thank you!

Nancy Guenther

It’s a great sharpener, Sue! I love it so far.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Sue. I'm glad you found it. I'm going to make a quick video about the Mitsubishi and another sharpener I have that I like to use.

Melissa Jayne

Hi Louise, Liss from the Sunshine Coast here :), Im wondering where in Australia you purchase your "soft press" paper from. Ive google around and could only fine one wholesaler but you had to buy 10 sheets :(. I'd like to give it a try. also, do you think the pencils would be ok to use on Fabriano Artistico cold press paper? thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Liss. I get mine from Parker's Fine Art Supplies in Sydney. You can use cold press but it will be more textured than mine when you use the pencils. You could paint this without the pencils as well.

Melissa Jayne

Hmm. Maybe 🤔 hot press would be a better option.

Annelies Degenkamp

It's again a beautiful painting and a trigger for me that I would love to paint it too... But there are so so many beautiful painting s to do....... Thank you Louise for teaching and inspiring me ❤️

Yian

Hello Louise, I am new to watercolor. I just started following your tutorials two months ago. How do you decide on the order to paint the different components of a drawing? Sometimes the order is obvious to me, but not always. For instance in this beach vine painting, you worked on the cast shadows the very first. Is there a reason for that? Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Yian, Thanks for your question. In the beach vine painting, I didn’t start with the shadows for any particular reason - it just felt right at the time. Every artist approaches this differently, but I usually work broad to specific. I block in larger shapes or key areas first, then add details gradually. It helps keep everything balanced as the painting develops.

Hi Louise, I just started a membership Patreon. I love the Beach Vine painting, so here it is. 🌹

Elly Meijer

O sorry, I cannot put the painting in here. I try it again.
