Hi everyone,

This is Part 1 of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/79475949

I painted this in memory of little Lenny - a beloved dog of one of my patrons.

This is not an easy painting which is why I have suggested it as suitable for advanced painters. As always, I take you step by step through my painting process and I have provided you with plenty of progress photos of my painting.

I used a limited palette of four colours.

The files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo was taken by Pics by Fran and I downloaded it from Pixabay

Here is the link: https://pixabay.com/photos/cavalier-king-charles-spaniel-puppy-5952324/

I hope you enjoy it.

PS: Later this month I will post a fairly simple seascape tutorial.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Oh! this is so lovely - our very first dog as a family was a Blenheim Cavalier KC spaniel (as here). My husband wasn't too sure about us having a dog - but when he found out that our Oskar shared his birthday he was hooked! Oskar lived to the grand age of 15 years and passed away in S. Africa. I shall enjoy attempting this painting - thank you so much Louise!

Tonya Kortekaas

I can’t wait to try this! Can you tell us where to get the reference image? I don’t see it listed in your post.

Louise De Masi

The link for the reference photo is listed in my message under the video and also on the Supplies List. Thanks Tonya.

I am tempted to try and paint this. I own a little Blenheim, my Emma. She is five. She so has that look.

Oh Louise, I am so happy to finally paint this. Then I will re-attempt to paint the real Lenny. I still miss him every day. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Going to watch this and attempt a Japanese Chin dog using this tutorial. I've been asked to paint one for a charity auction. I hope it turns out well!

We are adopting a KCS in January. They are so stinking cute. Just had to give this one a go. Thank you Louise.

I feel as though I failed miserably at this one, although I’m still thinking I’ll keep going to see if I can find some solutions. I just could not keep my paper wet. It’s winter here, so our house is dry from the heat, and I think that was part of it. I’m also using some different paper, and I wish I’d used Arches. I’m going to try wetting smaller areas, to see if tht helps. Even the paint in my palette dried quickly. I’m probably at the “intermediate” stage, rather than advanced, but I wanted to try. I was really discouraged last night, but I know you’ve said that you’ve had failures, too, so I’m hanging onto that. Thanks, Louise.

Louise De Masi

Don't feel down, failures are common when you paint in watercolour. We don't have the option of painting over our mistakes the way artists do who use other mediums. I often have to paint the same subject a few times before I'm happy with my painting. My painting cabinet is full of failed paintings but I learn from them where I can. ❤️

Anne Watman

You didn’t even have to respond, but it is so much appreciated. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials and all your support. 💕
