Hi everyone,

This is a fairly simple seascape tutorial.

I'm not a landscape/seascape painter but I am determined to spend more time this year practicing. I've bought some books, I've been watching YouTube videos and I bought a small pad of rough paper. Now all I need is to dedicate some time to practice.

I spent a day painting clouds over and over until I felt confident enough to paint this little painting. I have a video coming out on YouTube this weekend where I will share what I learned that day.

I've tried to keep this tutorial as straightforward as I could and, as always, I've included some progress photos of my painting to help you with yours.

I'd like to move away from sable brushes if I can so I've also recently started trying out some synthetic brushes. On the supplies list you'll see that I have listed Da Vinci Colineo and Casaneo brushes instead of my usual Maestro brushes.

The files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo was taken by Luc Dobigeon and I downloaded it from Unsplash.

Here is the link: https://unsplash.com/photos/BdvZQL0iebM

Good luck! I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Not sure if you can get them in Australia, but I've recently upgraded to Princeton Aqua Elite (they have a #8 & #12 long round, that are super pointy and excellent for detail as well as larger areas). I'm about to order some Princeton Neptune brushes (synthetic squirrel) that are also supposed to be excellent watercolor brushes. In the states, Blick.com has pretty good deals (along with my local art supply store).

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sanctity. I've read a lot of good things about Princeton brushes.

I'm not convinced I can pull off landscapes (they're hard to get right!) but my goal is to paint my cat, our local flowers, whatever I manage to grow in our garden, and eventually our beautiful coastline. Lucky for me, there's so many tutorials to practice on. Thank you, Louise! (I'm currently working on your fighting fish tutorial. And I love it!)

Joyce A Stevens

I love seascapes and will try this. But it does seem like it is missing something. Maybe flying birds?

Louise De Masi

Paint some birds in when you finish Joyce. Great idea!

Anita Repya

Can't wait to start this one

Monalisa Mackey

It’s lovely, Louise! I look forward to painting this. I live in The Bahamas so I am definitely a fan of seascapes. I agree too that a few flying gulls would be nice, but what jumped into my mind when I saw the seascape was I imagined a little lighthouse near one of the cliffs. Perhaps with the next seascape you could add a couple of elements like those in and maybe do choppy water with some sea spray😊

Louise De Masi

Thank you Monalisa. Yes more good ideas! With this one I wanted to keep it really simple for myself and for beginners who are learning too. As skills build I can incorporate more elements.

Lovely painting Louise! love your clouds in particular. I am not really into landscapes/seascapes for myself - I do like urban scenes though and hope to try some when time allows. I was a big fan of Princeton Velvet Touch when I needed a slightly firmer brush to help control the paint - now I have more confidence I just love the Aqua Elite (as Sanctity mentions) which are a synthetic sable - and the long rounds are just superb with the magnificent points! Not so keen on the synthetic squirrel ones, too soft for me but good for washes I guess. Good luck for finding what suits you!

Linda

Thanks, Louise. Looking forward to this one 🤗.

Sharon E Toombs

Great job Louise. I watch Paul Clark on Utube, He does beautiful landscapes and seascapes. I am excited to give this a try. Thank you.

Holly Watson

I love this! I love the colors in this beautiful painting. Louise, you are such a master at choosing colors! thanks so much for painting this beautiful seascape and for teaching us how to do it step-by-step!

Sanctity Johnson

I love Paul Clark! His masterpiece paintings seem so effortless, yet when I try them...they end up looking like a toddler's finger painting. (I need Louise to translate Paul's videos because I think he leaves out a lot of beginner/detailed information that Louise incorporates into all of her videos. Most likely, I also just need to practice a lot more.)

Andrea Paulis

I live close to the shore with miles of San Diego coast line to visit that I have attempted many times to sketch and paint with little success. Your tutorial gave me what I was missing and I am truly grateful for that! Thank you for sharing.

Susan R Scott

Just beautiful and as always the painting has your calming presence. Thank you.

Véronique Kowalewicz

I will definetely try this one! Maybe I will add some feature of my region in east coast Canada! 🥰 I really got to stop fussing! Do you have a video recommendation where you talk about how not to fuss so much? 🙈🥰

Louise De Masi

Lol- no I don't have a 'how to stop fussing' video sorry. I'm the same. I have to stop myself from doing it. I guess being aware that we do it is how we can stop. 😅

Véronique Kowalewicz

I think that you are absolutely right!!!! 😊 I will continue to be aware

Louise De Masi

I am trying to Jan. I love my maestros but I want to move to a vegan alternative. I know it's not going to be easy to find a synthetic brush I like as much.

Fadila Sides

As always, you work so hard to share with us! Thank you! I will be trying this this weekend

Penny Albright

This is wonderful Louise. I can't wait to try it. Please give us more!

Jean

I’m a baby beginner but I love watching the levels above so I know what I’m aiming towards. How do you cut your paper off the board?

Cheri Lee Altemoos

I thought you did an excellent job on this It was very simple as you said but it also just teaches technique if you call it of not thinking in the box of drawing out the where the clouds should go and then having to try to paint around it so I really really enjoyed this technique and I like seeing that you use paint and it's and it's purest form everybody wants everything to be so transparent and wear some things you just want to be opaque if that's the correct word thank you again for all your beautiful work

Louise De Masi

Hi Jean, Sorry I missed your message. Thank you! I use a sharp knife to gently cut through the gummed tape and then when the painting is off the board I have to cut off the edges of the watercolour paper to remove the gummed tape.

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Cheri. I hope you have some success if you decide to try yourself. 💕

Jean

Thanks!

Jean

You said to watch the sky as it dries in case it starts to form blooms… if it does, can you do anything about it… or just start over?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jean you can try using a dry hake brush to gently brush over the paper. The brush must be dry though. If the paper has dried too much when you spot it, wait until it completely dries- gently re-wet the whole area and then use your hake brush to brush over gently.

Audrey Reed

I can not dry brush. ARRRRRHHH!!

Jackie

I loved this tutorial… thank you so much.

Lindy Hawthorne

Im wondering what the difference is between using the mops as opposed to using Da Vinci Maestro brushes please ?. Is it just that the mops hold even more water/paint than the normal rounds ? TIA also trying to figure out the difference between a wash brush and a mop brush. :-)

Louise De Masi

Hi Lindy, Mop brushes generally aren’t as snappy as round brushes. They are great for creating soft, flowing washes and covering large areas quickly. They hold a lot of water and they are great for wet on wet techniques. A round brush is useful for creating controlled lines, fine details and they might give you greater precision with your brushstrokes than a mop does. Wash brushes are typically flat but you can use large mop brushes to paint washes as well.

Lindy Hawthorne

Wow that was quick.....thank you Louise. Im about to place an order and was scared of ordering the wrong thing (yet again). Im going to order the Tintoretto one that you used. thanks again.

Barbara Ford

I may be one in a million, but I’ll just say that it is fine with me if you stay away from landscapes (as far as patreon tutorials). There are so many “out there,” and I do not want to paint landscapes. For my part, bring on some more creatures (I especially love your mammals and birds).

Louise De Masi

Thanks Barbara. They definitely aren't my 'thing' and I know I can't please everyone. If I do anymore, they'll be similar to the cow vignette I painted a few weeks ago.

Barbara Ford

Thank you for taking the time to listen and respond. You are the best teacher ever. Thank you!

Caroline

I would love to do more water scenes. I think you have a duck one, which I might try when I have a good stretch of time, but getting light on the water is hard!

Diana Joseph

I would love MORE landscapes, just sayin!

Kimberley Meendering

I love the landscapes too. But also love the botanicals and animals. Would love ideas at the end of botanical videos on how to create background, or add to them for more interest....like a vase for a flower.
