Hi everyone,

Here is the Blue Jay tutorial.

I used a limited palette of just three colours for this painting.

There's a wet, splash of colour on the background that allowed me to include a lost edge along the back of the Blue Jay. You can paint the bird without doing that if you prefer. When I wet the background, just wet the bird instead and keep the colour on the bird.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo was taken by Richard Sagredo and I downloaded it from Unsplash: https://unsplash.com/photos/27YWPxPruMc

I've also put the link to the reference photo on the supplies list.

I hope you enjoy painting it and I'm here if you need me for anything.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Ooo I did this several months ago, it wasn't a tutorial just a picture I found and painted on my own

Maria Lopez

It is so beautiful Louise! Such an amazing surprise 💙

Louise De Masi

Lol.......You have good taste in reference photos Anita! 😂💙

Janet

Beautiful. Most amazing part to me is the face/head: you completely captured that part, even down to the sweet expression there. Question: have you ever done a lost edge on a branch? I'm thinking of doing one on the top of the bottom branch. I could just try it, but I'd love to have your thoughts on it.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Janet! That sounds like a wonderful idea. You can try it and if you don't like the look of it you can always paint the edge in after. I love that you are willing to experiment.

Jackie Sills

I love Blue Jays, very excited to try it. Is there a substitute for Winsor Blue red shade, I have Phalo Blue green shade.

Louise De Masi

Hi Jackie, the pigment code is PB15 so see if you have any paints with that pigment code. Otherwise, try the phthalo Blue and see what it looks like. It might be too bright.....I'm not sure.

Jackie Sills

Thank you, will do some sleuthing in my paint box😊
