Hi everyone,

This is Part 1 of the Cow in Water tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/90218638

This lovely lady wandered into a small dam while I was taking some photos of the herd. I quickly took some photos of her because I thought she'd make an interesting painting.

In this tutorial we will use a limited palette to work both wet on wet and wet on dry. We'll paint some water and the reflections in the water. We'll also combine sharp detail with loose shapes. There are lots of progress photos included to assist with the painting process.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

Yay!! Thank you Louise.

Monalisa Mackey

Thanks so much, Louise! 💕😃. This is a beautiful painting and I love the cow’s reflection!

Julie Hopkins

yippee! I loved painting the two cows and now look forward to tackling this one. Thank you so much Louise.

Priscilla Tenzar

I can't wait to try this one! You are amazing!!

Janet

So much to learn in this painting! I was thinking how this one really highlights the beautiful granulating French ultramarine blue. I never use that color alone but it's the ultimate mixer. By the way, I think that darker bit of green you added behind the cow is very effective. And adding that simple eye gave this girl so much personality. This one will be a real challenge but it's what I need. Thank you Louise.

Louise De Masi

I hope you enjoy painting this one too. Thanks Julie.

Margaret

This is amazing! Your skill as a teacher as well as an artist means that one day I know I’ll be good enough to try this!! Thank you. 💕

Anna Hamilton

Oh, I have been waiting for this wonderful tutorial. I've never attempted water, have very little experience painting animals, and it's probably way too advanced for me, but I have to try it!

Xue L

Loving your tutorials and art! May I know if the Facebook group is still active? If so, how can I find it?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Xue. I just sent you a welcome message with the Facebook and Discord link in it but you will find the Facebook group here. facebook.com/groups/118323255562001

I would like to view this in full screen but it is not allowed except to play in YouTube app. It is not on your YouTube page. Please advise. Thanks

Shelly Solle

Louise, which fixatif do you use for watercolor paintings?

Louise De Masi

Hi Shelly, Do you mean varnish after a painting is finished? I only varnish those paintings that are done on paper glued to a cradled board or a painting on Aquabord because they won't be going behind glass. For that I use Krylon Archival spray on varnish.

Shelly Solle

Do you think that if someone is going to frame a painting that I need to spray fixatif on it?

Louise De Masi

I don't spray anything on paintings that go behind glass.

Shelly Solle

Brilliant. I was panicking thinking I needed to do it. Thank you. You’re the very best.

Caroline

wow, louise, such perfection, I am just watching the video for now its certainly a labour of love!

Becky

I just joined your group, and almost finished my first painting. I there a place to connect with the other painters?

Louise De Masi

Hi Becky. Welcome. I sent you a welcome message with all the links you need to join the Facebook and Discord groups. Hope to see you there.

Becky

I connected to Discord but can not figure out how to find it here!

Heidi Osborne

Hi Louise. Just joined your Patreon page. Love your work and your soft voice. Do you find it easier to use a rigger brush to paint details in the eyes when they are smaller, as opposed to a 0 brush?

Louise De Masi

Hi Heidi, Thank you! If I am painting something really detailed and small like the details in an eye, I usually prefer the bristles to be more on the shorter side. I feel I have more control with shorter bristles.

Anne Kuin

Hi Becky, have you managed to get in contact with us on Discord yet?

Louise De Masi

Hi Becky, Dom here. Discord is a seperate app and you'll find it is in its own app or via browser, not here in Patreon. Paste this link into your browser- https://discord.com
